To the Cardinal question: actually, no, the Cardinals were not named after birds or exalted priests. In 1899 a woman in the stands gushed about the players' uniforms containing a "lovely shade of cardinal." St. Louis Republic reporter Willie McHale overheard her and included her remark in his column the next day. The rest, as they say, is history. Addition of the Cardinal as an ornithological mascot came later.

Who was the oldest player to get his 3000th hit?
Which player with 3000 hits had the lowest career batting average?
Two players hit a triple for their 3000th hit, who were they?
Seven are also members of the 500 home run club, but only one of the seven hit a home run for his 3000th hit.

Miguel Cabrera on the 500th HR?

Separately...Scott Rolen elected to the Hall of Fame, Jeff Kent, snubbed again. Rolen played 3B, a traditional power spot. Kent played 2B, a traditional light-hitting spot.

Kent had considerably more HRs (377-316), more doubles (560-517), more triples (47-43), runs scored (1,320-1,211), considerably more RBIs (1,518 - 1,287), a higher BA (.290 to .281), and a higher slugging percentage (.500 to .490). He was an MVP, Rolen never was. Both were 5x all stars. Both played 17 seasons. Rolen made more than $30 million more than Kent, maybe that was it.

Correction: Rolen was a 7 time all-star.

They had the same OPS (.855)

And one significant difference: 8 gold gloves for Rolen. He was a skilled player offensively and defensively.  Kent was more one-dimensional.  

Rolen was a great choice to enter the Hall.  Kent was borderline.  

Maybe Kent will receive his invitation down the road from the Contemporary Players Committee (like Fred McGriff).

Scott Rolen, not exactly a household name. I had to refresh my memory about the guy, and seems like a yawn to me for the HOF. Very consistent defensive player, okay offensively. Played for a long time. Played for good teams. Interestingly regarding HOF voting, he has the lowest approval during his first year of eligibility than anyone ever selected. Seems like the voters were just looking for another body to accompany the Crime Dog.

Hint: The oldest player to have gotten his 3000th hit was also the inaugural member of the 3000 hit club (he was 45!)

Lowest batting average was Cal Ripken, Jr. (.276).  Next lowest was Ricky Henderson (.279).  Biggio was third at .381.  Ty Cobb was highest at .366.

Both Yount's and Cobb's 3000 hit was a single.

HINTS: One of the triples was within the last 10 years.  It was from a player with only 96 career triples.  I don't really have a good hint for the other guy, but he played most of his career in the 80's and 90's.

The guy who is in the 3000 hit/500 home run club and whose 3000th hit was a home run is also of fairly recent vintage.  The other two guys who hit a home run for the 3000th hit were Derek Jeter and Wade Boggs.

Right, I missed the two years that Rolen had 5 HRs and batted .235 (2005) and 5 HRs, batted .242 (2011) and made the all star team.  And the years Kent had 27, 29, 37 and 31 HRs with 128 and 121 RBIs and was first in the NL in extra base hits, but didn't make the All Star team.  And Rolen the Great Fielder had 355 double plays in his career while Kent had 1,261. RtGF had 186 errors, Kent had 194.

Kent was an MVP, and finished in the top 10 in voting three other times. Rolen finished 4th once. His next highest finish was 13th.

Kent was a better than average 2nd baseman who played at 185 pounds and beat the 'roid users at their own game. As for fielding, Kent's range factor was between 3rd and 5th virtually every year, and in 1996 when Kent and Rolen both played 3rd base, Kent was 2nd in the league in range factor and Rolen wasn't in the top five. 

At the end of the day, Jeff Kent was a jerk, and the BBWAA voters treated him like the jerk he was and didn't vote him into the Hall of Really Swell Guys Who Never Offended Anyone.  Probably should stay out with other lousy players like Pete Rose, Lefty O'Doul and Shoeless Joe Jackson

Ichiro Suzuki was in fact one of the two 3000th hit triples.  The other was Paul Molitor.
Oldest was indeed Cap Anson.
Still missing the 3000 hit/500 home run guy whose 3000th hit was a homer.

As for the guy who hit an even 3000, it was Roberto Clemente.  He "stopped" by dying in a plane crash.

Only 96 triples?!? That's good for 173rd all time, probably top 25 over the last 75 years. The current major league leader still playing has 82 (Dexter Fowler), the next two have 58.
