Oregon loses both starting guards and post.  Duke loses both starting guards. Louisville loses both Van Lith and Verhurst both starting guards.

Duke has now lost a third starter, who is eligible for a 5th 'COVID' year.

Just wonder how many college coaches would prefer to go back to the previous transfer rule where a player has to sit out for a year (with exceptions) unless they are a grad transfer?
Most coaches who love the X's and O's of the game don't really like recruiting, but see it as a necessary evil.  And now they need to not just recruit a few new players for their team every year, they have to recruit potentially the entire team every year.  Those players that do NOT enter the transfer portal are probably approached and "recruited" to stay put.  It must be an absolute nightmare.  Rather than being a basketball coach, you have become a personnel manager.

Furthermore, it has to undermine whatever sense of discipline a coach tries to instill.  The good side of this is that coaches that are abusive will rapidly find their team vanishing.  But what about a coach that is professional but critical?  Does coaching now go the way of grade inflation?

I remember Tara saying at a press conference this year something like "You know, coaching is not like giving out candy.  You have to make corrections."  She is normally so taciturn that the remark stuck with me.  In retrospect, I wonder if more was on her mind.

I am sure it is a big change, but it is reality and coaches are going to have to make the changes necessary to adapt.

The reality today is that being a head coach is essentially being the head of running a business.  Beyond the players, there are 12 people listed on the coaching staff.  So, it is managing players, staff, overseeing and having some responsibility of events, camps, and fundraising, and many other things I am sure I can't imagine.  Granted, that is the reason for 12 staff -- to assist with it all.  But it's a big job, and certainly not just coaching.  Those that are successful have learnt to manage it all, and I am sure many, many headaches are involved.  But they get paid for it -- the top coaches are paid like business owners (maybe not to the level of CEO of tech companies in the area, but still are paid quite nicely).  I don't think 20 years ago many would have imagined there'd be a large number of women's basketball coaches making over a million dollars a year (some approaching $3M a year).  At that pay grade, I think it should be expected to be managing a heavy load.

Sounds like much of that is a GM's job, not the coach's.

The Head Coach is the GM.
Keep in mind some of the staff listed have other sports they work with. Not all with just WBB

It is a brobdingnagian job that has been evolving over the last 50 years, not just the last few. Just in the recruiting space alone, think of all the things that have changed...AAU coach involvement, scouting and tapping international talent, "one and dones", contact rules and viewing tournaments, social media, now the transfer portal and NIL. To be a great head coach, you have to do all of it AND be able to build a team that plays together and wins. Crazy difficult.

This web site has what appears to be a current list of players in the portal, the list by the player's current school.

Women's basketball transfer portal: Comprehensive transfer list for 2023-24 — Heat Check CBB

Utah has their two tallest players in the portal. McFarland showed real promise two seasons ago but then suffered a bad knee injury which kept her out of most of this past season.  The other is Rees.

Two ucla players in the portal, one has committed to the Condoms.

Not sure if it means anything, but Talana recently posted a story working out with Indya, along with Hannah and Elena, on the Stanford practice court.

Although it’s rare for transfer entrants to remove their names, I’m keeping my fingers crossed Nivar stays. I think she could be really special the rest of her career on the Farm!

Another positive tealeaf reading of this is a message not to worry about Talana and Elena since we can be confident that Hannah is not leaving. I'm responding to my really skittish fears here.

NIVAR can be starting SG while JUMP shifts to starting SF.

I would imagine that the triad of NC schools and UVA would want Nivar so am not optimistic here since she made the emotional decision AND location favors those ACC schools.

What if the transfer portal is an experiment in testing the free market value of NIL deals for these players...and that there's an implicit potential that Stanford boosters would match?

Grasping at straws here.  Couldn't imagine that three players would jump if you asked me at the start of the season :(

If you want to grasp at straws, try looking at the transfer portal from a player thinking "What have I got to lose if I go up on the auction block?  If no one that I want to play for meets the minimum bid, I can stay with my current team as they can't/won't replace me."

When you think of that approach for the players, if I were the coach I might consider implementing a policy of "Unless you have some particular hardship, if you enter the transfer portal, you will have no scholarship the next year even if you don't leave."

It might take a coach telling a #1 pick to pack her bags to cause players to realize there is a downside to entering the transfer portal.  (Granted, it seems likely that some team's supporters will pony up big bucks for a #1 pick.)

Since 2014 the Pac 12 has guaranteed athletic scholarships for 4 years.  I think it was the right decision at the time.  But now that transfer rules have dissolved, it creates an imbalance, in which universities must keep promises to players, but players need not keep promises to universities.

RE: WBB: Lauren Betts and Agnes Emma-Nnopu in Transfer Portal - BACardinal - 04-18-2023

Once a player enters their name into the transfer portal the school does not have to honor the scholarship if they chose to return.

RE: WBB: Lauren Betts and Agnes Emma-Nnopu in Transfer Portal - chimera - 04-18-2023

We should all keep in mind that NIL money has a whole lot to do with who can better play the social media game and get followers and likes and all that stuff.  It is advertising fluff for the most part.  Players are trying to sell us stuff.  Gotta build that "brand" to get the $$$$

So much for all the talk about playing for a Black coach.  I guess Dawn did not want her.  Instead, she can look forward in her junior and senior years to jetting to places like Champagne and Iowa City.

How TVD Might Be Dealing with the Transfer Problem

I have zero inside information.  However, the realities of the transfer portal dictate a lot about how a coach can and should deal with the problems that arise.

Last year, more than 1300 players are said to have passed through the portal, although some might have ended up staying where they started.   This year, as of two weeks after the NCAA final, 300 WBB players had already entered the portal.  This number is likely to have increased substantially.

Lacking inside info, this comment is really based on what I would do if I were the coach.

A coach that tells a player not to consider the options that the portal presents is heading into a gale-force wind.  The players know and talk to other players from a variety of other schools.  So, telling a player to ignore the portal and stick her head into the sand is a great way to lose the player’s trust.  This is particularly true at Stanford where one expects intelligent and well-informed players.

If a player expresses interest in the portal, the coach should not turn hostile.  Far better to talk it through with the player and, if the player feels strongly, tell the player to go ahead and explore what’s out there.  During these conversations, I would certainly remind the player of the opportunities that the Stanford program offers.  So, for two of the Stanford players, Emma-Nnopu and Nivar, there is still a possibility that they will decide to stay at Stanford.

When a player enters the portal, they lose a guaranteed scholarship with their team.  The coach, however, is likely to try to preserve the scholarship for the player if the player decides to stay, especially if the coach knows, respects, and values the player.
So, is there a possibility that Emm- Nnopu and Nivar will decide to stay at Stanford?   Yes, but quite possibly the players don’t know, and may not know for some time, what their options might be.  The process could take some time.

As to Betts, she has apparently decided to transfer to UCLA.  I would guess that the possibility of a starting position and greater NIL benefits were factors.  The uncertainty that Betts potential transfer created is now over.  Stanford coaches now have to deal with the players remaining on the team.  Every loss creates an opportunity.  One possible benefit is that it decreases the incentive of a talented player like Iriafen to herself consider transferring.  And it makes Stanford a more attractive option for talented high school posts who might consider Stanford.

The NIL stuff is a dumpster fire, out of control and in need of nationwide controls.  There is nothing Stanford can do about the overall chaos that NIL has generated.  In the short term, a coach in TVD’s position should look to put all her players in touch with marketing people who could help the player explore NIL options.

Well did not the ucla coach say that her top players were getting something like $70,000 in NIL money?

RE: WBB: Lauren Betts and Agnes Emma-Nnopu in Transfer Portal - Card10Fan - 04-18-2023

Remember at one point, we thought we had the inside track for the top 2 players in the 2022 class. We had Betts committed and were confident about Rice. Now, UCLA has flipped the script and will have both top recruits. Last time that happened was Uconn in 2012 (where top 2 players went to the same college) with Moriah Jeffersen and Breanna Stewart.  That duo ended up 4/4 in winning national titles.

I’d much rather see Betts at UCLA than Notre Dame. UCLA has never made a Final 4 so this would be Coach Closes most talented roster. Although I still wouldn’t put her in the exceptional coach column.

RE: WBB: Lauren Betts and Agnes Emma-Nnopu in Transfer Portal - thetreerulesall - 04-18-2023

It’s truly amazing to me how so many people on here seem to think they know what they are talking about with absolutely 0 inside knowledge of the day to day goings on within the program .
Any proof Betts wanted to play for a black coach ? No
Any proof she’s leaving because of playing time predominantly? No
Assuming she left for NIL reasons instead of happiness is again probably unfounded and ignorant .
Maybe look more to the coaching staff and treatment of players and Unkept promises and try to understand how hard a decision it probably was for a kid to leave Stanford after just one season.
Seems like it just wasn’t just her who felt that way either.
To think the allure of being at Stanford trumps everything else is just ludicrous
