The sweep of the Beavs sure leaves a better taste on one's mouth than last week. Nice result, though each game was touch and go.
Good Things
- Eddie!!
Park went 7 for 12 with a grand slam.
Late last season Park still hadn't managed an extra base hit at Stanford. Then he finished the year with 9 doubles and a triple. This year he already has 5 doubles and 2 home runs. And his average is 0.333.
- Carter Graham may have ended his slump - I hope.
He went 5 for 11 and the key game winning double yesterday.
- Braden Montgomery is playing like an MVP and a star. After an 0 for 4 Sunday, he's still hitting 0.403 AVG, 0.823 SLG, 1.364 OPS. His pitching hasn't been spectacular though.
- Half the pitching.
Scott was fantastic. Had total control of the game for 6+ innings. Much better everything than his first start last week, though the curve ball was most noticeably better. The one run he allowed he only let get to first, then Dugan allowed him to get around. Scott did give up 5 hits, but none were hit particularly hard (all singles).
Dowd and Pancer were perfect in relief on Sunday. Perfect 4 innings of work without anyone reaching. Dixon was alright as the starter.
Concerns
- The other half of the pitching.
14 walks and HBP in the three games.
ERA for the weekend was 5.333 (against a team that had struggled to score recently)
Bruno, Dugan, Uber all with strike zone troubles.
- The ninth hitting spot.
8 spots in the lineup seem pretty set. 7 guys are slugging over 0.450, and then Graham is at 0.382 as he comes back from an early season slump.
The ninth spot has been held at times by Nati (0.194 SLG), Saum (0.238 SLG), and Haskins (0.071 SLG). Haskins is just coming back from an injury, so not too surprising his timing is off at the plate. It seems the coaches want him to be that ninth spot in the lineup (though actually hitting 8th), so hopefully he'll get his swing down.
Pretty impressive that there is a single iffy spot in the lineup (if starters all healthy).
- Feels like we're leaving lots of guys in scoring position, but I may be overly influenced by Troy's tough day Sunday (grounded into double play with runners on first and third, grounded into double play with bases loaded, lined out to third with bases loaded).
Developments
- The three-headed catcher position seems to be settling down. Rios has become a left fielder. Moore seems to be settling in as the first-option catcher. Saum appears to be the odd man out except when Moore needs a rest.
- Bowser appears to be set to bounce between 2B and 3B depending on who else is in the lineup. Bowser plays 2B with Troy or Nati at third but 3B with Haskins at second.
- Pitching rotation seems to include Scott/Dugan following each other in some order on Saturday, then Dixon/Dowd on Sunday. In both cases, the starter of the pair has swapped lately. On Friday its Matthews then whomever is available/ready.
- Pancer seems set to get the most innings out of the bullpen. He's sort of the anti-Bruno - hasn't walked a single batter yet this season.

He’s the Friday starter. You are in charge of your own schedule. ;)

He had one 6-pitch and one 5-pitch inning!

Utah coach Gary Anderson has been taking lessons from Billy Martin. Today, bottom of the 8th Park at second two outs Tommy Troy at bat with an 0 and two count. Anderson comes out to visit the pitcher. Yesterday he tried to work the umpires on several occasions. He must be getting paid per TV appearance.

The announcer on Bruno as a prospect out of HS: " ...the scouts...liked his ability to attack hitters."
Throwing strikes or hitting the batters?
I'm giving him grief but I'm rooting for him to find the success he found last year.

Bruno comes in and walks 3 batters in the 9th. Bases loaded with one out. WTF? He's gone.

Five run lead. Bruno loads the bases with 2 walks and a hbp. He needs to visit whoever Matthews saw two years ago to straighten his head out.

Scoring changed. Second batter was hbp. Other than that, … see my comment above.

Drew Dowd came in with the bases loaded and one out, allowed one run to score on a fielders choice and struck out the last batter.
