To build on this in a couple of different ways, OSU tied for sixth in Pac-12 play. Arizona tied for last place. They're both going to OKC.

Meanwhile, 12 (of 13) SEC teams made the tournament, but if Florida loses to Virginia Tech today, there will be zero SEC teams in the WCWS. Boy would that be a shame

Stanford arguably had the easiest path to the World Series but the bats didn't come through when needed.  In the regional Stanford played a team that went into a slump the end of the season.  Plus their top pitcher seemed to be off her A game for most of the series.

Stanford was in one of two super regionals having no seeded team.  OSU is very talented and got hot at the right time of the season.  Best of luck to them.

I get the idea of an easier path playing an unseeded #3 regional seed, but at this stage in the tourney, there are no easy paths. OSU has played us incredibly tough and close the last two seasons, so either way it was going to be very tight. My analysis is that Mazon, as a redshirt senior, really put her team on her back and pulled them across the finish line.

In the critical fifth inning yesterday after Mazon came in, she showed one pitch in each AB to Hayes and Gindlesperger that were gettable pitches (however, both pitches were taken for strikes). When an elite (and potentially All-American) pitcher makes that one mistake, you have to take advantage, because the rest of the AB, she gave us nothing good (both AB ended in strikeouts).

Also re people posting about the game, I think many people may have been at the game (BobK and others). There are a lot of people that care about this team, know they had a fantastic year, and with a year of more offensive development (plus it sounds like the addition of at least a couple of great hitters), this team can contend again for WCWS and possibly a national championship.

RE: Stanford Softball - PVTree - 05-29-2022

I watched the whole game yesterday, frustrated that our offense couldn't get going after giving up the only 2 runs in the first inning.

When I was living in Boston, Stanford went to play a Regional in Amherst. I made the trip from Boston to watch them play. They won the regional to advance. The team invited us few Stanford fans to gather with the team and thanked us for our support.

I may be a casual follower of the sport, but am an avid fan of the Stanford softball team.

There are people who may not post much, but who still are interested in the team and who read the softball posts on this board. This thread has been viewed more than 10,000 times.

RE: Stanford Softball - d4cohn - 05-29-2022

I re-read the gostanford article on our incoming recruiting class, and I don't think my previous statement
conveyed enough how good the incoming class is. Not only was it a Top 10 class in the country, and
third in the Pac (which could have half the WCWS teams after today if ASU wins; Pac has clearly at least for this year,
re-established itself as the premier softball conference after the SEC across the board massively underperformed expectations and their seeding),
4 out of the 5 are top 30
recruits.

The key is whether our incoming recruits are able to hit for power (at least gap-to-gap if we aren't able to
get more HR power), and also boost averages at the middle to bottom of the lineup.

As I think BC said, even a deep, well positioned team can lose in NCAA tourney (though softball at least prior to
this year has been a lot more favorable to home hosts and chalk than baseball). However, I think next year
our team could be like Northwestern has been this year (a consistent top 10 team, regional host, and WCWS and national championship contender).

In light of a Stanford sports team making an amazing step forward, I felt a softball fan should have started a new thread for the regional series and one for the super-regionals. There apparently wasn't enough interest to do that.

This thread covered some of the pre-season, all conference games, and the post-season.  Some WBB threads have 30 to 40 posts for one game.  I hope it's clear I have become a fan of the team and the coach.

RE: Stanford Softball - BobK - 05-29-2022

Canady had 14 Ks the other day as her team won their state championship
She a big hitter Also

We also didn’t see Frosh Nadeau play. Don’t know why but top 50 player out of HS

I believe Schultz at 1st Young at SS and Gindlesperger CF will be back for a covid year as they didn’t participate in the Sr day ceremony.

RE: Stanford Softball - BostonCard - 05-29-2022

I think it just depends on whether someone starts a new thread or not.  Some people are into starting new threads, others will build on an already extant thread.  I will note that softball is not unique here; both baseball and womens volleyball have season-long threads.

I wouldn’t read into it disinterest in the team.  I think it just reflects the posters’ preferences.

Hi PA, no it was clear you are a fan of the team and coaching staff (as am I). It seems like BobK or I have started many of the softball threads recently, so for next season, (collective) we can try the tourney/series thread approach, as opposed to one for the whole season (or maybe have a separate thread for big tournaments/series, to complement the season long thread).

And yes, to host a super regional at this stage in the program building is a massive overachievement and amazing result (even if not capitalizing on winning a gettable series at home will sting a bit).

I was actually thinking this regarding Nadeau too. However, I will say given how well our INF played this year, particularly defensively, Nadeau not playing will give her a red-shirt this year, and four years of eligibility moving forward. And yes, you are right on all three starters not participating in the Sr day ceremony, so I presume they will be back.

Women's Rowing got almost no attention here, lost the national title by a tie-breaker.  90 Director's Cup points.
Fencing got almost no attention here.  54 Director's Cup points.
For the 148 points from cross-country (M+W), there was a minimum of attention.
For the nearly 200 points from T&F (M+W x In+Out), there was relatively little attention.
Women's Field Hockey didn't get much attention.
Men's wrestling only got a little attention.
Men's swimming got relatively little attention, in my opinion.
I bet few people here knew that Artistic Swimming won its conference and finished second at its Nationals.

That's all ok by me.  We follow what we want and we post what we want.  If someone wants this board to feed them more than they find here, they should either go somewhere else (if such exists) or find a way to stir up interest.  We've got some people who have a lot of knowledge and we're fortunate when they share that with us, whether it is about recruiting, history, other teams, or legal issues.  We've got other people that have interest and contribute when they can.

Stanford Softball had a great season until the last two games.  I know it exceeded everyone's expectation.  The team, while sad for the end, should feel very proud of what they accomplished and should be looking for showing even more next year.

Northwestern beats ASU 8-6.

The star pitcher for Northwestern is from Pleasanton and another is Emily Schultz’s sister

RE: Stanford Softball - d4cohn - 06-01-2022

Great article in Softball America on Coach Allister and the Stanford softball program.

This quote, in particular, stands out (but at the same time is not surprising given how competitive Coach Allister is):

“We should be competing for championships,” Allister said. “Stanford is hands down the best athletic department in the country. When you look at the successes of women’s teams here, those teams have won six national championships in the last three years. There’s no reason that softball shouldn’t be competing at that same level.”

Doesn't it always start with recruiting?  Talent, culture, coaching...Stanford supplies the rest.

Great point. I will say there are, unlike in some other sports, strong academic schools that
are either very accomplished in softball (UCLA) or are rising powers (Duke) or
are longer term winners (Northwestern), so Stanford has competition for elite student-athletes
(in both senses of the word).

But strong coaching and a good culture allows for the other aspects of Stanford to work as you point out.

The first Pac 12 Softball tournament will be at U of Arizona May 10-13.
