Saban apologizes for naming specific teams.

Article suggests that Saban is complaining because he cant compete well in this new environment ?.

The Saban "controversy" epitomizes what is wrong with our society.  About 95% of what he said was an accurate portrayal of the situation with and implications of NIL. Yet all anyone wants to talk about is who he used as examples and the blowback he got for using them.

You can say what you want about how Saban might not be the best messenger to complain about people getting competitive advantages given the ones he has, but I doubt there are too many head football coaches at Power 5 schools who demonstrate a more sincere concern for what college is suppose to be all about for every athlete.

We've talked about it on this thread, how is schools pay major revenue sport athletes, it puts other athletes in other sports at risk of not having opportunities.  You can say that's rich coming from a guy who works for a school that has cut as many sports as possible to feed the football beast, but he's nonetheless bringing up a real point of concern.

He also made clear the NCAA has its hands tied when it can't get any protection from the court system, and that it needs federal legislation to reign in the unregulated market for players that has been created, notably on display yesterday when the Biletnikoff Award winner just transferred from Pitt to USC for who knows what kind of payoff.

There probably is some truth that Saban knows Alabama doesn't have the booster money to compete with other alumni bases from richer areas of the country.  What good does all that SEC TV money do when it no longer provides an advantage in the market that secures players?  But I still think what he said demonstrated a solid contextual understanding of the NIL situation, the challenges it poses, and the implications that it could have for re-defining college sports into something it should really not be.

I detest Alabama football for several reasons, but Saban speaks the truth.  One side of me however is cheering A&M for being so brazen.  Instead of a modern vote suppression scheme it is a reversion to Tammany Hall where suitcases of cash bought turkey dinners and whiskey for everyone in the precinct who voted your way.  It is refreshing to see transparent corruption as opposed to disguised corruption.  The more open and obvious it gets, the sooner the whole edifice will collapse.  Then at least there may be a 50/50 chance of something better....

....that and I am really tickled that corruption in sport may actually hurt Alabama.

Saban speaks the truth, but it is not out of principle; it is because he wasn’t brazen enough or didn’t have the deep pockets to do it.

it must really be tough for Alabama to have only the #2 ranked recruiting class with their poor NIL program.....

More grist for the mill:

"Through discussions with recruits and their families, Day believes that top quarterbacks require $2 million in NIL money, while offensive tackles and edge rushers require around $1 million."

RE: It's uglier than you imagined: NIL - chrisk - 06-02-2022

At a total of $13M, only a select few football players are going to get significant NIL deals.

So that’s $6m for 5 players and $7m for the rest of the team….unless you have two top QBs on the roster at the same time….

Maybe Day meant for every recruiting class, since he recruits an elite QB (or two) every year. Behind superstar C.J. Stroud on the roster right now he's got Kyle McCord (5-star) and Devin Brown (On3's #1 overall recruit, high 4-star in the 247 composite) and of course he also had Quinn Ewers in the room until he transferred to Texas. Ohio State is always going to have at least three big time QBs on the roster at a time.

As the schools generate more money and stuff like this becomes the norm, there are are two things that seem destined to happen:

1. Players will form an organized labor movement to get paid from schools
2. Schools will be taxed

Could also see the possibility of Congress declaring any athlete who takes NIL money - or over a certain threshold - has to declare their scholarship, room, board, etc. as taxable income.

Nothing would force more honesty in professional college sports than this. It would be the driving force to separate football from schools as a purely educational endeavor, and allow the schools to license their names to have professional minor league football, with its own standards and regulations totally apart from the NCAA. Oh the irony, given the NCAA was started specifically to address the dangers of college football.

Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick has said this model of schools licensing their own NIL to professional football operations is what is ultimately coming.

I don’t doubt that your vision is likely to come to pass, but… who would want to watch a minor league football loosely affiliated with collegiate campuses?  It’s everything you hate about the NFL, but with players who are not as good.

How many fans and viewers would college football lose with the "Swarbrick Model" for lack of a better way of putting it? There will certainly be some percentage that will be turned off it, but for someone like Swarbrick to embrace something so radical, I would think he has some reason to believe any such attrition will be worth it financially. Of course, I don't think he's thought it all the way through, either.

When you take out the school requirement, and truly have unregulated free agency, the only way to get control of run away spending is to cap compensation, have a CBA and a draft. There would no longer be recruiting. There couldn't be.

"With the first pick in the College Football Association draft, the Auburn Tigers select...."

RE: It's uglier than you imagined: NIL - Goose - 08-11-2022

To some degree schools already have "NIL" deals with the shoe/athletic apparel companies. However, there are limitations on the scope of those deals. I would like to be a fly on the wall when Swarbrick tries to sell Fr. Jenkins on a broad-scope NIL deal for the name "University of Notre Dame".
