Albert Pujols?

Yes, it's Pujols!

1. Pete Rose          3562 games
2. Carl Yastrzemski 3308
3. Henry Aaron      3298
4. Rickey Henderson 3081
5. Albert Pujols      3080
6. Ty Cobb            3034
7. Stan Musial      3026 (tied)
7. Eddie Murray    3026 (tied)
9. Willie Mays      3005
10. Cal Ripken Jr. 3001

Who were the next six? All were less than 105 from 3,000 games, and none of them have been mentioned in this discussion yet.

They were: a Giant, an Oriole, and the other four played for between four and six teams.

By the way, no currrent players are anywhere near the 3000 game threshold. The active leaders in games played are Freddie Freeman with 2304 and Andrew McCutchen with 2299.

Giant - Barry Bonds or Willie McCovey?
Oriole - Brooks Robinson

The Phillies just pulled off a miracle comeback down 4-0 in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs, and won 6-4 on a walk-off home run.

https://x.com/novig/status/2091622485607264534?s=61

But that is not the biggest ever comeback in the bottom of the ninth with two outs.  The biggest comeback that I could find erased a 6-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth with two outs.  Who pulled it off?

The Giants in June but maybe down like 8 with two innings left

I’m talking specifically about teams down to their last out.

I enjoyed watching my Phillies win it today!

The only other epic comeback I know of was in 1990. Phillies at Dodgers. Phillies down 8??? in the top of the ninth, I think two outs. I know the Phillies won, might have been extra innings.

If so, it was an even more epic comeback than you describe, in that the Phillies were down 11-1 in the top of the 8th and scored two in the 8th and 9 in the 9th to win.  However, most of the damage was done with 1 out, and they tied it at 11 with 1 out.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - terry - 08-23-2026

In a AAA minor league game in 1979, the Denver Bears trailed the Omaha Royals 14-7, with two outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the ninth.  Denver's next nine batters all reached base and scored, capped by a three-run home run for a 16-14 Bears’ win.

Normally, a minor league game like this would have been witnessed by maybe a few thousand people in a small stadium, most of whom would have left before it was over. But the Bears played in Mile High Stadium, and this game was on the 4th of July with a big fireworks show scheduled after the game. So nobody left, and more than 38,000 people were there to see it happen.

Yes, that’s the game. I was home for the summer in New Jersey and actually watched it live. Earlier that night I was gambling in Atlantic City. On the way home I stopped at Robert’s Place (sports bar in Margate) and had some steamed crabs and watched some of the game. When I got home in Ocean City I finished the game.

Side track, some other epic Philly games. 76ers 1986-87 season, in the only visit to Seattle, they are getting beat by 30??? at halftime and came back to win.

Eagles fail, gave up 28 in the 4th quarter and lost to the 49ers, 1989???

Flyers epic game, playoffs vs Pittsburgh 2000??? I think the Flyers tied it late and eventually won in 5 or 6??? overtimes.

Barry Bonds (2,986), Robinson (2,896) & Staub (2,951) are all accurate. The other three were former GIant Omar VIzquel (2,968), Adrian Beltre (2,933), and Dave Winfield (2,968)

Baines (2,830) was close, McCovey (2,588) not quite as close.

All-Star Tristan Peters of the White Sox became the second player in MLB history (after Babe Ruth in 1921) to record 10+ hits, a home run in every game, multiple doubles and walks, and a stolen base over a five-game span. At 26 years old, Peters is hitting .282/.345/.472 with 12 HRs and 52 RBIs, and is considered one of the best defensive center fielders in MLB.

SS Otto Lopez is currently slashing .306/.341/.440/.781 with 30 doubles and 29 SBs.

Which team did the White Sox fleece to acquire the services of Mr. Peters and which team did Miami fleece to acquire Mr. Lopez?

Hint: it's the same team...

Going to guess it is the Giants, and if so, ouch

Correction on both players.

Peters was traded by SF to Tampa for Brett Wisely.  Subsequently, his contract was sold by the Rays to the White Sox.

Lopez was waived by SF.   He was selected through the waiver process by Miami.

In other words, the Giants were not fleeced by anyone.  Things are not going great now but there is no reason to rewrite history to build on a negative narrative.

What's the positive narrative for letting two talented 2026 All-Stars -- slip through your fingers?

I have no problem at all with either guy moving on.  Lopez was a flyer signed during spring training and put on waivers before the end of that same spring training.  He had no track record that indicated he would be a good player.

Peters was acquired by SF from Milwaukee for a low level pitcher.  Three months later, he was dealt to Tampa for a fringe big leaguer.  Again, he had no track record of success.

In other words, both guys were nothing more than part of the never ending whirlpool of players that came and went during the Zaidi era.  To single out two guys out of who knows how many players is weak.  Overall, Zaidi’s track record was terrible. The reason the Giants are in the mess they currently find themselves is Zaidi.  He was too busy playing fantasy baseball (by wheeling and dealing at edges) when he should have been focusing on drafting and developing talent.

With genuine respect, I disagree. Lopez hit .436 in 43 ABs at AAA in the IL before the Giants acquired him and gave him just six ABs. He would go on to hit .271 in MLB that year for Miami. Agree with you that Zaidi didn't develop him, that is certain. But he had a track record.

Last night, new 49er Mike Evans caught a touchdown pass to mark 13 seasons in a row with a TD reception.

There's only one other NFL player who can make that claim. Who is it?
