I hope you meant to type "bridge" not "city" that was destroyed. . .

Yes,  “bridge” not “city”

And I assume those Russians were jumping out of the tank because they expected to be hit by an anti-tank missile.

Agreed, a whole lot of unconfirmed reports at this point, I'm now seeing reports that Ukraine is attacking Lyman and an other one saying UA forces are now attacking Izyum.  Who knows what is actually real right now, but hopefully we see lots of Ukrainian flags, happy civilians, and Russian POW's.  Oh, and lots of Russian equipment donated to UA forces as a gesture of good will...

This is a somewhat more measured thread on the scope of Ukraine's counterattack in Kharkiv Oblast.  It acknowledges reports that Ukrainian troops have "reached Kupyansk" and are "trying to enter the city," but does not state that Ukraine has taken the city.  That leaves open for speculation what number and type of troops and whether they have sufficient fire power with them to withstand whatever efforts Russia might make to defend its outpost, including air power.  This report also suggests that the reported attacks near Lyman and Izyum are really more preparations for bridgeheads to be attempted in the future, rather than immediate threats to take those cities.  Even if all the caveats are correct, this is still an impressive attack by Ukraine.  It's also more believable than suggestions that Russia is just refusing to defend thousands of square km.

Astounding to me how fast this has proceeded.  I hope it wasn't too fast.
That, of course, results in equipment being abandoned.   I imagine intelligence agencies are very interested in getting hands on some of that equipment.

Maybe they had spotted the drone that was tracking them from above.
"Hey, Yvan, is that our tank on the live video feed from Ukraine??...I'm outta here"
They didn't want to be on the next highlight reel as the drone dropped an explosive into their hatch.
It is true that they may have lost their tank but they didn't lose their lives.

It seems to me the Russians are the ones at risk of being encircled, in multiple places.

I find this guy to be pretty reputable when it comes to reporting things, and all I can say is holy crap.  This offensive is just nuts, almost a blitzkrieg.  We haven't seen this much land taken since the early days of the war...

Will the Kharkiv offensive be the shove that collapses Russia's whole creaking "special operation"?

Agreed, the Ukrainian military has come a long way since 2014, they have had their flaws and failures, but what they have done during this entire war will be taught in history books for a long time.

RE: Way OT: Ukraine - Goose - 09-09-2022

I for one hope there isn't "heavy fighting" going on in the urban areas of Isyum. As I said yesterday, if Ukraine can occupy and hold Kupiansk and/or Kivsharivka, Izyum is untenable. There are NO possible supply lines there except through Kupiansk and Kivsharivka. It is not worth the casualties to take a city that will fall on its on within days. There is no way out for the "garrison", whatever remains of it. The idea Ukraine is  preparing for further advances is more to my liking FWIW.

The question of what defense Russia had in the area Ukraine has recently occupied is a good one. We know it wasn't very substantial because we don't see hordes of bodies everywhere. I am pretty sure Ukraine had a very good idea of the Russian ORBAT in that area before this started. They knew which and how many BTGs were located where. I OTOH  don't know that. All I can judge by is the KIA and EPOW that Ukraine claims. The KIA number is more of a guess, but they will know how many people they captured. If it is in the hundreds, Russia did indeed leave all this area virtually undefended. If it breaks into a thousand or more, it becomes progressively more impressive.

I think not by itself. That said, this Kharkiv offensive seems to be getting wider every day, so it may become even more strategically important. Even as is, it puts more pressure on Russia in the Donbas. The northern flank might become open. While this isn't a game changer by itself, it requires troops that Russia does not have ATM. If Ukraine can start making this kind pf rapid progress in Kherson Oblast, the combination of the two would IMHO bring down Putin. The potential for complete defeat in the short term can't be concealed from the public. Too many rank-and-file would know about it.

I assume “boiler” is a mistranslation that was meant to have been “cauldron”, because that’s what Izium might turn into.

Looks like Ukrainian troops have made it to the outskirts of Izium.

Thanks BC! It can be done and is really the only way Ukraine can do it. Nice to see they are well along in the exercise. Ukraine is still a bit light on movement to contact discipline though :-).

I also really hope the Ukraine high command remains focused on Kupiansk and Kivsharivka. Everything south of there is doomed if Ukraine can hold those points. I doubt Russia is moving troops from Lyman to Izyum as reinforcements. If anything those troops are going in that direction because that is their only direction out, unless they walk cross-country.

One other thing that is to me quite jarring and indicates Russia was real thin on the ground is that we are not hearing about lots of mine clearance operations as part of the Ukrainian advance. A Russian retreat, even a hasty one is usually protected by mine barriers. Sometimes the mines are just dumped on the ground (not buried) but they are present. So far, we aren't seeing this. Seems more than a bit strange.

Ukrainian Su-27s are now flying around with HARMs as well. Badass.
