no idea who, but I would guess they tied all their group games and finished 3rd in the group and did not advance

I recall reading long ago that this wasn't all that common -- it's only happened a few times in WC history, and I don't think any of them advanced. No idea about 2010.

That is correct.  In 2010, New Zealand of all teams tied all three of their group stage matches and wound up third in their group.

Placed in Group F, New Zealand exceeded all expectations against highly favored opponents: Slovakia (1–1): Winston Reid scored an equalizer deep in stoppage time to secure New Zealand's first-ever World Cup point.
Italy (1–1): Shane Smeltz scored an early goal, and the team held on to shock the reigning world champions.
Paraguay (0–0): A resolute defensive performance kept the South Americans at bay, though the draw left New Zealand just shy of advancing to the knockout stage.Group Standings

New Zealand finished third in their group with 3 points, eliminating the defending champions Italy (who finished last with 2 points).

Spain won the World Cup but had lost its first match in the group stage, to Switzerland.

New Zealand tying Italy is pretty cool in that story.

Stanford basketball had its first 1st-round draft choice in five years in Ebuka Okorie, picked at #17.

Stanford has had fourteen 1st round picks in NBA history. Name them.

1. Ebuka Okoriie

Bonus question: Only one mid-major has had three 1st-round picks in the last five years. Which mid-major university did that?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - skip75 - 06-28-2026

Bonus question answer is Mick's Santa Clara University!

Stanford first round picks - George Yardley, Rich Kelley, Brook & Robin Lopez, Jason & Jarron Collins, Todd Lichti, Brevin Knight, Zaire Williams, Casey Jacobsen, Dwight Powell, Josh Childress, Josh Huestis ?????

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 06-28-2026

Curtis Borchard. Plus Huestis

Not sure the team, but I'd guess three ties in the group stage, while two others got at least two wins. . .

Turns out it was 15. Here's the player/year/# in the draft/original team that drafted them:

Josh Childress, 2004, #6, Hawks
Rich Kelley, 1975, #7, Jazz
George Yardley, 1950, #8, Pistons
Adam Keefe, 1992, #10, Hawks
Brook Lopez, 2008, #10, Nets
Zaire Williams, 2021, #10, Pelicans
Todd Lichti, 1989, #15, Nuggets
Robin Lopez, 2008, #15, Suns
Brevin Knight, 1996, #16, Cavaliers
Ebuka Okorie, 2026, #17, Thunder/Pistons
Jason Collins, 2001, #18, Rockets
Curtis Borchardt, 2002, #18, Magic
Casey Jacobson, 2002, #22, Suns
Josh Huestis, 2014, #29, Thunder
Mark Madsen, 2000, #29, Lakers

Dwight Powell and Jarron Collins were 2nd round picks.

Mexico went undefeated in the 1986 World Cup.

They were ousted in the QFs when Germany made more penalty kicks. Officially, the game is recorded as a tie.

When I clicked the link to the thread, it took me to the question, the last post on the prior page. Didn't realize it had be answered already . . . .

I think Jarron Colins was a second round pick.

OK, fair enough, though I think most people think of it as a loss.  Aside from New Zealand in 2010, only one other team has gone undefeated and not made it out of the group stage.  Who was it?

Only one team has ever gone undefeated and untied, winning all 7 matches without going to penalties.  Who was it?

Which World Cup Champion suffered the worst loss (by goal differential) in the group stage?

My guess would be England or Italy.

Goal differential.

And Brazil for undefeated.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 07-01-2026

The worst loss by a team that went on to win that same tournament is West Germany's 8-3 defeat to Hungary in the group stage of the 1954 World Cup.

BC

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 07-02-2026

Brazil (2002) is the only team to have won all 7 matches, but that is a bit deceiving because the World Cup was expanded to 32 teams with 16 teams in the knockout round in 1998.

Other teams to go unbeaten/untied (but fewer matches):
Brazil (1970) - Won all 6 matches
Brazil (1962) - Won all 6 matches
Brazil (1958) - Won all 6 matches
Uruguay (1930) - Won all 4 matche

BC

Turns out that four teams were undefeated without making it out of the group stage.  Aside from New Zealand:

Scotland (1974): They became the first team ever to be eliminated from the World Cup in the group stage without losing a game. They won one match and tied two, but missed out on advancing due to goal difference.  They are the only team to have won at least one game and not lost in the group stage and not advance.

Cameroon (1982) & Belgium (1998): Both of these teams also recorded three draws in their group stages, tying every single game, and were knocked out without a single loss

The other interesting team is Switzerland in 2006.  They made it through the group stage without conceding a goal (three 0-0 ties) and advanced to the knockout stage, where they lost in penalties to Ukraine after a 0-0 match. Thus, the team made it through the entire tournament without conceding a single goal in open play.  Also interesting, in the penalty shoot-out, they failed to score on a single penalty.
