Some World Cup trivia.  Only three teams outside of Europe and South America have made the WC semi-finals.  Who were they?

Morocco and the US, but I only know because I (think I) heard it on recent match broadcasts. The third one I'll guess...

Mexico?

If Morocco covers Africa (was thinking maybe possibly South Africa), I'll go with either Japan or South Korea - just don't think Australia or New Zealand have ever had great soccer teams

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - PVTree - 06-17-2026

South Korea in South Korea/Japan world cup
Morocco last world cup

Third? Since I know it's not Mexico, I'll guess USA back in one of the first World Cups.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Leftcoast - 06-17-2026

The US soccer highpoint continues to be the 1930 third place spot in the inaugural 1930 World Cup.

Per Wikipedia-13 teams participated with four coming from Europe.  FIFA twisted arms to get the European teams with many no-shows citing difficulties in getting to host nation Uruguay. (I looked this last part up)

The two others are more recent - Morocco last cup and South Korea in the 2002.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 06-17-2026

Yes, the three are United States (in 1930), Korea (at home in 2002) and Morocco (in 2022).

With his 3(!) goals yesterday, who did Messi tied for the career World Cup goalscoring record?

Your clue did it!

Bobby Richardson, 1960 Yankees.

I thought it was a Yankee from 1960 but I had no idea which one.

In the last half-century, a 25-year-old golfer was failing at the PGA tour. He'd missed 11 cuts. He was the ninth alternate for a PGA Major. Through an odd series of events, eight golfers withdrew from the event citing:

- exhaustion
- tiredness
- wanted to qualify for the Ryder Cup (in Europe)
- refused to play without a practice round at the longest course for a PGA Tour event to that date
- decided to play in an alternate event
- two with injuries
- one with a family/personal issue, and...
- ...at 10 p.m. the night before tee-off, the last player received a panicked call that his wife was about to deliver their first child.

Therefore, at 10:05 p.m. the night before the first round, the ninth alternate was invited to participate in this major. He drove 7.5 hours through the night (he was two states away, couldn't get a plane ticket) and this 25 year old rookie ended up using the caddy of the player who left to see the birth of his child.

And then, the 25 year old won the major. Not only that, but a spectator died after being hit by lightning, and this golfer donated $30,000 to the spectator's family. The spectator's daughter went on to become a doctor.

This golfer (born in California) is the answer to three trivia questions:

1) Who was the golfer to win a major championship as the ninth alternate, what year, what was the major?
2) Who is the only golfer to have won multiple major golf championships who has never been invited to play on the Ryder Cup team, either in Europe or the USA?
3) Who is the only golfer to have met the following criteria:
     1. Has won at least one major championship.
     2. Has won at least one tournament on the Asian tour.
     3. Has won at least one tournament on the PGA Tour Champions Tour.
     4. Has won at least one tournament on the Korn Ferry Tour.
     5. Has won at least one tournament on the Sunshine Tour.
     6. Has won at least one tournament on the European Tour.
     7. Has won at least one tournament on the South African Tour.
     8. Has won at least one tournament on the Ben Hogan Tour.

It is indeed John Daly, 1991 PGA Championship at Crooked Stick in Carmel, IN -- 7,289 yards, the longest course in a major to that date. Daly's "Grip it and Rip it" style was encouraged by the caddie, Jeff "Squeaky" Medlin who was Nick Price's caddy.

Another World Cup trivia question.  In the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, only one team was undefeated, but they didn’t win the World Cup.  Who was it, and how did that happen?
