RE: WBB: The Race to the Summitt - JustAnotherFan - 01-23-2021

I thought Tara would be able to keep the lead over Geno this year but maybe I was wrong. Two losses in a row hurt.

Stanford Upcoming games:
1. Cal Poly
2. Pacific
3. WSU
4. Washington Dec 6 first possible chance to tie Pat
5. UC Davis Dec 11 first possible chance to surpass Pat

Geno's first chance to surpass Pat would be Jan 7 at Baylor--UConn's 8th game.  Wouldn't it be nice if Carrington prevented that from happening.

Tara is 11-2 this season; Gino is 9-0 (will be 10-0 when UConn finishes crushing Georgetown).

That puts Tara at 1105 and Gino at 1101 lifetime.

UConn has 12 remaining scheduled games. Stanford 11.

Covid-19 cancellations could prove as much the difference as Stanford's losses.

RE: WBB: TARA PASSES THE SUMMITT - Phogge - 01-23-2021

And if they win the whole thing that will be six more wins for UConn.

There, fixed it for you.

RE: WBB: TARA PASSES THE SUMMITT - M T - 03-28-2021

At the start of this season, Tara had 1094 wins while Geno had 1092 wins.
At this point, Stanford and UConn will be playing in the Elite Eight.
With her team at 28-2 so far, Tara now has 1122 wins.  (Worst possible outcome: 28-3;  Best: 31-2)
With his team at 27-1 so far, Geno now has 1119 wins.  (Worst possible outcome: 27-2;  Best: 30-1)

If Stanford were to lose its next game and UConn wins the remaining 3 games (Elite Eight, Semi-Finals, Finals), then the two coaches would have the same number of wins.  So, even in the worst case, Geno can not pass Tara this year.

If Stanford were to win its next game, Tara will retain a lead into the next season.   Best case is that she has 6 more wins than Geno.

I heard some references about how tough the year was on Tara that made me think she could decide to leave on a high note.

I also saw an interview of Geno about his COVID illness.  He said repeatedly that with COVID, he felt the same each day when he got up as he did every other day.  I felt it was obvious that he was AVOIDING saying he felt good when he got up.

I think Geno would be loathe to step down a few games short of Tara.  If he were to do so, I think he'd have to have very little choice.

We've all heard how competitive Tara is.  I could imagine she might rather go out on top versus maybe slipping into 2nd place.

In the unlikely but possible case that the two coaches would be tied at the end of the season, that would be a scenario in which I could imagine both coaches retire.  I hope that doesn't happen!

(Geno wasn't on the bench for two games, but people give him credit for those games.  It's not the same as missing a whole year.
I can't remember Tara not being on the bench, except of course for the year she took off for the Olympics (for which she gets no credit for Stanford wins).)

RE: WBB: TARA PASSES THE SUMMITT - StanFanFam13 - 03-28-2021

I'm no Geno fan, but I can't imagine that any coach who truly loves the game would be so legacy-obsessed that their decision to retire would hinge on whether they could "go out on top" in the record books, as opposed to whether they felt they had more to give, more players they were excited to work with, etc.

I especially can't see that from Tara, who spent the whole year downplaying the fact that she was approaching Summitt's record and attempting to refocus media coverage on her team. I hope she enjoys many more years at Stanford.

RE: WBB: TARA PASSES THE SUMMITT - PVTree - 03-28-2021

Tara had publicly urged the 3 seniors to come back (at least let them know that they are welcomed back). I don't think that sounds as if she is contemplating going out on top. Sounds contradictory to me.

I don't think she's ready to retire... Aren't Gene-o and her the same age? [Just looked it up...Tara is 9 months older] I think we have TVD for a while (5+ years).

It kind of seemed like Don Nelson was mailing it in towards the end of his NBA coaching career, just trying to get the all time wins record. I can't imagine either Geno or Tara doing that sort of thing, though!

RE: WBB: TARA PASSES THE SUMMITT - oldalum - 03-29-2021

I think Tara, if anything, is further away from retiring than ever. I remember an interview with her early in the pandemic, talking about what she did during the day, and she said something like, if this is what retirement is like, I don't want it. Meaning, no basketball, nothing purposeful to do. She loves to coach, that's what she lives for. She ain't gonna give that up until she has to.

Geno should not get credit for the two games he didn't coach the team.

While I agree with the sentiment of this statement, I have to disagree.  He was officially the Head Coach of the team when the games were played.  IIRC, when Tara coached the Olympic team she had appointed an interim Head Coach for the season.

RE: WBB: TARA PASSES THE SUMMITT - BostonCard - 03-29-2021

When Steve Kerr was out with a bad back in 2015 and Luke Walton coached the Warriors to a 19-0 start.  NBA rules state that the head coach, not the interim coach gets credit to the wins, so Kerr got credit for those wins.  But Walton won coach of the month for October and November, and the NBA considered changing the rules.  So, while there is precedence for this in the NBA, I disagree with the rule.  Hence my feeling that Geno should not get credit for winning two games he did not coach.

I'm in the "give him credit for the two games " camp. Not only was he the official head coach, but more significantly, he was the coach during the season before the games -- being a coach is about more than being on the bench at a particular game. As the Yukon Coach for 2020-21, he's responsible for developing the players and the team over the  season.

Marianne Stanley co head coach with Amy.

RE: WBB: TARA PASSES THE SUMMITT - bl82 - 03-29-2021

Tara has waited many years to get the type of recruits that she is pulling in now on a regular basis and that Geno gets to hand pick from every season. The academic limitations will keep Tara's pool to a relatively small size, but her yield rate for top 25ish prospects that can get admitted must be at an all-time high.

That is why I don't think she will be leaving anytime soon, unless Stanford cancels women's basketball.

There is an NCAA precedent for this.  I do remember this scenario.  In 1995, Duke was 9-3, then Coach K went out with a back injury and surgery.  The team under the assistant coach went 4-15 the rest of the season.  Duke officials then attributed that 4-15 record not to Coach K but to his assistant.  It was obviously an attempt on Duke's part to sanitize K's legacy.  There were yearly petitions to reverse the decision, and finally in 2011 the NCAA ruled that the 4-15 should go on K's record.

(Of course, if the rest of that 1995 season were 15-4, would Duke have done the same?)

NCAA gives back K's 4 wins and 15 losses
