Stanford fans may remember that Mariah Stackhouse was 2 down with 2 to play vs. Baylor in the 2015 championship match and went birdie-birdie to take the match to extra holes where she won on the 19th.

I win all my matches on the 19th hole...

This top 4 finish for Women's Golf is one of several for Stanford teams this year, even without including the 4 national champion squads.

Shannon Aubert can match Danielson's 7 victories with a win today.  By my count, she is 6-3 in her career. Aubert is all square in her match through 13.

With the tie going to the Wildcats, Shannon Aubert picks up a 1&1 victory to tie Danielson's record. Congrats to Aubert on a great career for the Cardinal!

It was not really a vintage year for the women's golf team.  Despite the stellar summer records of several players on the roster, they did not win a tournament (or really contend for one) during the spring season until winning the regionals. Several players (notably Shannon Aubert) really struggled. But the team worked hard and had the right attitude to perform well when it really counted. Coach Walker has every reason to be proud of this team. it was a lot of fun following them virtually.

Everyone should rest their refresh thumbs. The men's tournament starts on Friday.

Congrats to Aubert for having a positive finish to a rough spring, and to our women's team for really pulling out some strong performances when it counted. This is a young team; other than Aubert, our starting 5 are underclassmen. We have every reason to be excited about next year.

And thanks to Spiny, Hulk and others for such thoughtful, sharp, and insightful commentary. I don't follow college golf at all and you guys made it really easy to jump on board and get invested in our team.

I, too, think fatigue starts to become a factor.  It is true that it is a factor for all the teams, but it manifests differently in different situations.  It isn't physical.  These are are young, fit women and they could probably handle much more golf today.  But the fatigue is a slight lapse in concentration or an impulsive tactical judgment or a minor slip in swing technique.

Ted Wiĺliams is said to have teased Sam Snead about how easy golf is.  After all, he said, I have to try to hit a ball moving at 95 m.p.h. with movement.  Sam responded, "Yeah, but I have to play my foul balls."

Those short putts that were missed can be the result of stress overload that has led to a very small loss of focus.  The game sometimes places pressure relentlessly, and one moment's lapse of concentration can cost a stroke.  And then the game gives you a few minutes to try not to think about that error.  ?

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Hulk01 - 05-23-2018

We are likely to get better.

Over the next three classes, three golfers currently ranked in Rolex's top ten Junior Golf rankings will be coming to Stanford.

Next year, it's #10 Calista Reyes, ranked #4 in this incoming 2018 class.  We also have signed a German golfer about whom I know very little but who has competed well there.  GolfWeek, almost purely on the strength of Reyes, ranks this class #3, behind USC and Florida.  Three of those USC signees already are at USC and played in this event.

The following year, we welcome #6 Angelina Ye, currently living in Florida by way of Shanghai, China.

And the year after, it's #2 Rachel Heck from Tennessee.  Heck already is a two-time, first team Rolex All American as just an eighth grader and high school freshman.  (For comparison, Andrea Lee was a first teamer all four years in high school and a second teamer as an eighth grader.  And for further comparison, our former star Mariah Stackhouse made first team once and honorable mention twice.)

And we may be in serious running for the current #1.  That's Lucy Li of nearby Redwood Shores, who was born in Stanford Hospital and perfectly fits our profile.  (Top girls golfers tend to be thoughtful and intelligent.)  And given her maturity and her parents, I would not be surprised to see her graduate a year early.

If you've never seen Li, catch one of the many videos of her on YouTube.  She's one of a kind.  And if she does come to Stanford, I hope Coach Walker allows Li to choose and make her golf outfits.  You will see why on many of these videos.

It's clear from our recruits' comments that we are seeing a Tiger Effect in our recruiting, but even more a Michelle Wie Effect.  The Asian junior golfers grew up idolizing Michelle. Ye, among others, speaks of Wie often.

Cannot resist, too, the possibility of a 2020 Stanford lineup that begins "Reyes Heck!" and ends with the melodious "Ye, Liu, Li."

In short:  Things may get even better, but a hats off to this team.  Given the juggernauts at UCLA and Alabama, there is no shame in finishing third in the nation.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-23-2018

I am bullish on Stanford women's golf and Coach Walker.  She was a fantastic find (from UC Davis).  I think everything is in place for Stanford to continue to be a national title contender despite the limited pool of admittable players.

To get over the hump and win it all, Stanford has to get better production from the bottom of the lineup at the national tournament.  This year, that would be Mika Liu and Ziyi Wang. Among the 84 players completing 4 rounds of medal play, they finished 76th and 82nd. They were 0-4 in match play. Mika Liu may have been weakened from the flu. But Ziyi Wang, who had finished 4th in the Pac 12 tournament and 2nd at the NCAA regionals, seemed overwhelmed. I hope that she (and her teammates) can turn this experience into a positive so that they come back next season with resolve and greater confidence. The national championship will be competed at The Blessings GC at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. A Robert Trent Jones Jr course, not Tom Fazio. But the challenges should be similar to Karsten Creek.
