Yeah, not a fan of giving offers to special teamers but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Re: Class of 2016 - BostonCard - 10-18-2015

I know.  I get offering a preferred walk-on position, and, if they earn it, a scholarship.  But given that long-snapping is a teachable skill, it smacks as a waste of a scholarship.  Then again... a bad snap that turns a game might make you wish you had invested in one.

Re: Class of 2016 - TrumpCard - 10-18-2015

Reed Miller is about to graduate.
CJ Keller is the only other LS on the roster.
If the staff has determined that it can't rely on Keller, then the staff needs someone else, pronto.
LS may be teachable with time, but if there's no time, a walk on who's raw is not feasible.
A walk on won't even get to come for summer workouts.
I obviously can't say with any certainty, but the offer seems like a reasonable move if there was a misevaluation or some other issue with Keller.
Otherwise, it seems odd.

Re: Class of 2016 - socalstanfan1 - 10-18-2015

Interesting timing, that the offer to a LS comes just days after the Michigan-Muff on a low snap to the punter.

Probably just coincidence, but...

Re: Class of 2016 - TrumpCard - 10-18-2015

If this offer says something about Keller, it may also say something about Beall.  The staff may like who they've got at kicker and be planning to put him on schollie when Ukropina graduates. If no need for a kicker this year, that may have been the opening needed to take an LS.

By the way, I noted that Mcnitzky had several tackles on punt coverage.  You don't really expect that from an LS.  If he someday saves a TD by making a tackle on one of the many elite speedsters in the conference, we may feel better about spending the offer.  It's nice that Bailey is a legit athlete too.  I think it's asking for trouble if your punter and LS can't really tackle.

Re: Class of 2016 - BobK - 10-19-2015

Excellent thoughts Trump,  at least from my seat.

Re: Class of 2016 - TrumpCard - 10-19-2015

I am guessing we will see some movement with the recruiting class starting Thursday when seniors get their results from the October SAT exam.  I hope Swann and Stewart get the results they need to feel comfortable committing and that we don't see any (or much) attrition from the current commits.  If David Long cancels his future official visits, that would be an excellent sign.

Latest on Long.

Wonder if the position issue is really such a big deal to him.

My first thought was: could be concern about the position, could be some issue with admissions, or could be a little bit of both.  Hopefully it is only admissions and Long gets the score he needs on his SAT, or does the work in the classroom, that leads to the offer and we are safe with him.  He would be a great addition to the program.

Re: Class of 2016 - OutsiderFan - 10-20-2015

As far as I am aware, unlike many programs, Stanford encourages recruits to take visits to be sure Stanford is where they want to be, so taking visits isn't an issue.  And if Stanford coaches encourage other visits, they probably also tell kids they know are potentially borderline for admission, to keep their options open.  IMO, you don't commit to Stanford unless you really want to go there, because you know just because you commit it doesn't mean you are going there.  So all this talk about making sure Stanford is the right place can more than likely be attributed to uncertainty about admissions.  If Long is admitted, it's hard to imagine him going elsewhere.  All this talk about positions and everything is just a smoke screen, IMO.

Very few recruits will put themselves in a position to make it clear that the only reason they don't choose Stanford is because they weren't admitted.  Demetris Robertson is one of the rare exceptions.  His approach seems much more sincere and the one I prefer; say Stanford is your top choice until it isn't.  This is the same approach Jabrill Peppers took too.

Long is better suited to corner than to WR.  He's gotten rave reviews in all the combines at corner and he was selected to the USAAB at that position.  I'm sure that Stanford's coaches understand that as well as Long does, and that Stanford's coaches say they are willing to grant Long's request to play exclusively at corner.

The issue, which isn't easy to fix immediately enough for Long's comfort, is that Stanford has a bit of a hole at WR and a lot of depth at DB.  Nevertheless, the staff is trustworthy when it says that Long will play corner.  Fanaika would have been very valuable at NT, but he's probably better suited to OG, and the staff kept him there at a cost to the team this year.  The two contributors who changed positions (Lloyd and Whitfield) did so at their own request and would not have been nearly as successful at their original positions.  To the best of my recollection, the other guys who have moved are guys who probably aren't good enough to make a difference at any position.

The problem is that the coaches can say that they like Long at corner until their faces turn blue, but Long, for whatever reason, may not yet feel comfort about that statement.  Ultimately, however, I think Long will get the comfort he wants for two reasons.  First, I do think Stanford will land one or more WRs in this class.  Second, I think Long will talk with the current players and understand that Shaw and his staff are really good about honoring players' requests and looking out for the player's best interest, even to the team's potential detriment.  See, e.g. Shittu burning his redshirt; various graduate transfers getting Shaw's blessing.

Thus, I agree with others that Long will come if the SAT score is what he hopes.

Call me a skeptic since Michigan already has 21 commits and already is favored for 8-9 more guys, but if true, then discouraging:  [tweet]656543874110894080[/tweet]

Michigan had a small class last year, only 14. So it is possible that many of these guys will be showing up for the spring semester and count against their 2015 allotment.

However, we also know what Harbaugh's recruiting MO is. Don't see any reason why moving to Michigan would calm that down.

Re: Class of 2016 - TrumpCard - 10-20-2015

It's certainly possible, but I don't put much stake in this particular report.  It seems inconsistent with the other interviews of the same kids that other reporters took after the same official visit weekend.  Here's an example of a contrary take:

Looks like Harbaugh is up to his old tricks.  There's a headline in there that says, "Commit Updates: Attrition Is Happening"

Yes. This approach unquestionably wouldn't work (besides being sketchy) at Stanford. I wonder if it will work (other than being sketchy) at Michigan.
