RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 10-12-2022

Jamie was great in "Collateral" and "Ray" but he was no hit, no field.

Jimmie Foxx was part of Connie Mack's best teams along with Grove, Cochrane and Simmons.

Since the AL and NL MVP awards are inaugurated in 1911 one Red Sox (Ted Williams) has won it twice. 10 others won once.

Only two Boston Braves won the award. Who?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 10-13-2022

From Central Union HS in El Centro CA my birthplace: Bob Elliott of the Boston Braves
The other Boston Brave: Johmmy Sain or Warren Spahn

Red Sox:
Fred Lynn, Jim Rice, Yaz, Vern Stephens

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 10-13-2022

Bob Elliot yes. No on Spahn, no on Sain and we need two days of rain in West Marin.

I thought Vern Stephens but no. Lynn, Vaughn, Pedroia, Rice, Jensen, Clemens, Yaz, Foxx (not BC's Jamie), Speaker, Betts.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Giants - 10-13-2022

Following up on BC’s question about walk-off HR’s….

Who hit the first walk-off HR in postseason history?

Clue: Don Newcombe was the pitcher.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 10-13-2022

Walk off.
Well pre 1951 and Thompson
Al G if he was a Yankee not a dodger

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 10-13-2022

Tommie Henrick off the Newk in a 1-0 Yankee win. Read it as a kid on Tommie's card. Think it was a Bowman. Think it was Game 1, 1949 WS.

What was Henrick's role in another Dodger-Yanks WS walk off game a couple of years earlier? Who was pitching and who was hitting? What was the hit?

And Bobbbbbb, nice guess so I guess nobody has a clue but it was Johnny Evers of the Braves in 1914.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Giants - 10-13-2022

Evers - I would not have guessed that because when I think of Evers, I think of the Cubs and Tinkers to Evers to Chance.

Yes on Henrich.  As noted, Game 1.

Hey Bob, Thompson’s HR was not a postseason blast.  The three game set v. Brooklyn was an extension of the regular season (all stats generated were included in the regular season numbers).

Giants it was post season to me. As in I didn’t know about baseball until spring 1952

I have a photo on a wall of Eddie Stanky jumping on Leo’s bat
The HR made me a baseball fan at a young age

Did I forget to give out the answer to my trivia question, or did I miss that someone got it.

Anyways, the record for most walk-off home runs belongs to Jim Thome, with 13.  Not who I would have thought.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 10-13-2022

1947 Game Four at Ebbets. Henrich in RF. Cookie Lavagetto pinch hitting, two outs bottom of the ninth. Yank Floyd (Bill)
Bevens has walked nine but has not allowed a hit. Miksis and Al Gionfriddo both pinch runners, are at first and second. Cookie hits the ball over Henrich's head scoring both Dodger runners and breaks up what would have been the first no-hitter in WS history.

Two days later Gionfriddo figured in one of the WS greatest moments. What happened? Who was the hitter and who was the pitcher? Bobbbbb and I saw him pitch in the Coast league. What was the pitcher's nickname?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 10-14-2022

Gionfriddo made a great catch. I think the hitter was DiMaggio but the pitcher??
I think John Lindell played but as a outfielder back then

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 10-14-2022

Johnny Lindell was a teammate of DiMaggio and by then was an outfielder. He moved on to the Pirates and played for the Hollywood Stars when we were kids. Last MLB card Topps '53, last and rare series.

Red Barber's greatest call, "Back for it goes Gionfriddo... back back back... he makes the catch against the left-centerfield bullpen...... ohhhhhhhhhhh doctor!"

The pitcher was "Lefty" Joe Hatten of Dom Bums. Soon to be seen by us pitching for the LA Angles in Seals Stadium.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 10-14-2022

Lindell went 24-9 with the Hollywood Stars one year

To my knowledge, the catch resulted in the only time DiMaggio ever showed any emotion on the field, kicking the dirt after the catch……

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 10-14-2022

Newsreel footage of DiMaggio running to second proves Giants' statement. I think Lavagetto's game winning hit was in his last MLB at bat.

FWLIW, DiMaggio said that was the only time in his career that he expressed a negative emotion on the field...

Yesterday’s Padres win over LA was nearly a post-season record.  Specifically, the regular season win differential between the clubs was 22 (LA 111, SD 89).  The record is 23.  Which two teams set that record and what were the regular season win totals of the teams?
