Schaffer would be a nice addition. By the way, I think Swann will play DE. Also, Williams may be under-rated on Rivals. He's a 4-star on all the other services, plus he reports offers from UT, OU, and tOSU.Â

That's my take on Williams. He's going to get a lot of PT as a True Frosh next year if he ends up signing with Stanford, I'm guessing.

Anyone heard news on Stanford NT commit Bo Peek?Â
MaxPreps indicates that he's played in only 2 of his team's 6 games. I'm wondering whether he's injured:Â

As an aside, Stanford hasn't fared too well with elite DL prospects. Off the top of my head:
Julian Jenkins - The #1 ranked DE in his class. OK, but not nearly as good as ranking suggested he would be.
Ekom Udofia - Was a top 7 DT in his class (before injury), was OK, but not great at Stanford.
Aziz Shittu - A 5 star, kind of struggled to find a position, has been OK, but not as good as ratings suggested.
Jordan Watkins - Not even a starter as a RS Junior after being ranked the #9 DE prospect in his class.
Matt Masifilo (Rivals #25), Sione Fua (Rivals #47), Terrence Stephens (Rivals #30), Ben Gardner (NR), Josh Mauro (Rivals #61), Henry Anderson (Rivals #27), all ranked lower than the above recruits, and all far more productive in their Stanford careers. You can even add Harrison Phillips (Rivals #30) to this list as someone who also seems poised to be more productive than the elite DL recruits Stanford has signed.
So the fact Swann is #47, Williams is #43, and Peek is #50 seems to AUGUR well for Stanford's future DL prospects.
It is disappointing but Thomas is proving that he was worth his elite ranking.
Solomon Thomas was rated #2 SDE nationally #25 overall, and he is absolute terror in his RS-Frosh year. Very glad to have him!

Is Caleb Kelly remotely in play for Stanford? I certainly don't have high hopes, but you never know. We've got to hope that he's enrolled in 2 APs and then rely on mom to close the deal.Â

You forgot David Parry, a walk on!
That being said, I don't think you can argue that lower rated recruit is going to do better. I mean there are a lot of lower ranked players who haven't really contributed (Lance Callahan, Charlie Hopkins, Anthony Hayes, JB Salem from 2011, Nate Lohn and Ikenna Nwafor from 2012, and I'm sure others from earlier years).
We remember the lower ranked guys who contribute, because it is notable, and we remember the busts. But we don't tend to remember the lower ranked players who didn't contribute.

Terrence Stephens was the consensus #231 player the country and a four-star; listing him as some sort of lowly-ranked recruit is an error.

Re: Class of 2016 -

Sorry to pile on, but the original analysis is odd. Per the argument, Stanford didn't get predicted results from 4 elite DL recruits over a period of 11 years (including one guy who got repeat all conference honors and was drafted), so now we should prefer lower ranked DL recruits going forward. We all know that recruiting rankings are imperfect, but, other things equal, I think almost anyone would agree that higher ranked recruits are better. Maybe we could tweak the argument to say this:
Stanford has done well with some 2- and 3-star DL recruits since Hart took over as the DL coach and Turley took over as the S&C coach. Based on that past success by two well-respected coaches, Stanford may be able to continue getting good results from some 2- and 3-star DL recruits. It's particularly easy to project success for Swann and Peek because they are really solid 3-star recruits with numerous power conference offers and an all-american bowl invitation each.Â
That's an argument I can buy.

Hey Publius, is that Kelly in the photo, who's the girl, and where'd you find the photo? Thanks!

Stephens was the 30th rated DT, which doesn't scream elite prospect. Not a single SEC offer, and best other one was Penn State. No Michigan or Ohio State either.
Solomon Thomas does look like he may be the first Top 10 ranked Stanford DL recruit to live up to his billing. I'm by no means suggesting Stanford shouldn't be going hard after Rashan Gary types. Just acknowledging the success Stanford had had with lower rated DL recruits and that it's been less common with the elite ones in general.

20th rated DT per 24/7, which is pretty damned good.
Scout had him rated as the 19th DT and a top-300 player (222nd).

Even if you have a restrictive take on "what an elite DT recruit is," it's a category error to lump David Parry and Terrence Stephens together.

BC - I understand that Malala Yousafzai is interested in Stanford for next fall. Pretty sure that a Nobel Prize winner would be #1 recruit. Still, daughter of POTUS definitely a 5 star also.

I think it's sociopolitically false to consider Obama a "liberal" simply because he's a Democrat, but I don't think this is the thread for such discourse.
