Very doubtful Town's sticks to Alabama. Either way taking a QB in 2015 never made sense

It makes sense to take a QB in 2016 or 2017. 2015 doesn't make any sense

If he believes that Alabama trumps Stanford in this department then I would say we definitely got outrecruited.

As to your question, there are a myriad of scenarios that could lead to Hogan, Burns and Chryst no longer being in the program in 2015-2017. What if Hogan leaves after 2014 and Crower wins the starting position. 1-2 could transfer. What if one has to have a medical retirement? What if one has academic troubles and gets suspended. It would take a worst case scenario, by the QB position is the one you probably want to plan against a worst case scenario. 2016 and 2017 could be thin or poor quality if you don't have enough good candidates to push the starter.

Lets not forget the 2015 recruiting season is still very young. It's possible Town changes his mind. It's possible Rosen still selects us (are we even sure that he was Shaw's #2 choice?). It's also possible that someone emerges that is just as good or even better than these guys. So I think it is a little early to push the panic button.

JPRI - agreed that this is too early to be worrying about 2015. We're still a long way from Chryst signing his LOI, let alone knowing who will be in the QB depth chart in 2016/2017.

As far as worst case scenario Chryst being the 5th QB guards against that.

I wonder if Town committing to Alabama so soon after he got the Stanford offer was just a coincidence. Can't help wondering a bit if the Alabama coaches saw he was offered by Stanford and called him up and said "Hey, Ricky, you're our number one choice but we need your assurance that we're yours. If we aren't we just might have to move ahead with someone else."

The earliest I remember us getting a commit was Shayne Skov and that wasn't as early as this. Plus Shayne Skov is originally from the bay area. There are exceptions of course but this seems like an off the cuff decision

Stated another way, I am not sure if any of your kids have gone off to college but let me just say, they way they choose doesn't particularly make sense. When I understand what my kids were thinking I might be able to opine about these rather unique athletes think.Â

If he's going to college primarily to play football, yeah. no problem. I just can't see him picking Alabama over Stanford if he truly believes
the "overall person" stuff.
P.S. Another one I can't believe.
"People are going to be surprised a kid from California would go to the SEC and get out of California," Town said. "But it really fits Ricky's personality. He's more of a Southern-type person. He's all business. This is a really good fit."
What type of "business" are we talking here? Stanford grads have founded half of Silicon Valley. Alabama grads have founded....?
(Actually I translate "all business" to mean that he wants to go to a place where football is the unquestioned first priority).
Gotta give the Alabama recruiters credit, though. They did one hell of a sales job on him.

Town is from the bay area, I believe he's only been in socal 1-2 years.

In 2007, Harbaugh offered Dayne Crist and Landry Jones before Andrew Luck. We need to offer Rosen ASAP, but it wouldn't be unprecedented for this to work out.

Actually Rosen says he doesn't plan on making a decision until his senior year, so unless he plans on giving priority to the first in line, I don't think there is quite as big a rush as some do here.

Long answer: it's always good to take one QB a year, partly because of possible injuries (see: Josh Nunes) and partly because of possible transfers (see: Brett Nottingham). The latter in particular is extremely common among college QBs because it's the one position where a backup really doesn't get much playing time/a chance to shine. We've taken one QB a year the last few years except 2011, where we took two (Hogan and Crower), so we might be overstocked by one. But next year is apparently a banner year for west coast QBs, and we seem(ed) to have a lot of interest from the top two in Rosen and Town, plus some excellent second tier prospects in Brett Rypien and Brady White.

It's the position that's hardest to project so having as many candidates as possible is the best strategy. There's also the opportunity to convert them to another position. A high school's QB is often its best overall athlete. It is certainly true of what I've experienced first hand - playing basketball with Kirk Herbstreit and then his successor who ended up QBing a D-2 team. "Playing" basketball in my case is an exaggeration. The few times I could get my hands on the ball, I passed it to them as quickly as possible.
