RE: Class of 2026+ - triangle2 - 04-04-2025

Both Avery Howell and Kayleigh Heckel from USC seem to be heading to the portal. They were both on the radar screen from the class of 2024. Howell is listed as 6'0" although we had her at 5'11" during the recruiting cycle. Heckel is listed at 5'9". To be honest, I didn't watch USC enough to have an opinion on how each defends, as it seems like a critical need for next season is someone who can be a solid on-ball defender. I like that Howell can shoot though.

Howell's stats: 3 starts, 8.5 PPG, 21.8 MPG, 46.2% from the field (and 50-115 from 3), 24 assists to 11 turnovers, 84.8% from the line.

Heckel's stats: 2 starts, 5.3 PPG, 16.5 MPG, 41.9% from the field (and 9-37 from 3), 50 assists to 32 turnovers, 76.5% from the line.

RE: Class of 2026+ - Jskass - 04-04-2025

Money changes everything - even the intra-team dynamics as we expected. If you look at where each is from one could anticipate Howell might want to team up with her HS teammate at UW, though if WNBA prep matters then there's a top group of 5-6 coaches...Heckel from NY so UConn? But once we're talking about NIL money....?

RE: Class of 2026+ - !ZAR! - 04-04-2025

Love both of those players...  dreaming that Stanford could pickup both Heckel and her old teammate Koval...  of course, there are no spots, so nevermind...

Howell never seemed interested in Stanford. Just my read, could be wrong...

RE: Class of 2026+ - jonnyss - 04-04-2025

i wonder if, when kate says we're not getting any transfers in, she is hinting that we don't have any nil money left over to pay for a top transfer.

RE: Class of 2026+ - Hoops9092 - 04-04-2025

Heckel and Howell were great pieces this season for USC. With all these transfers, from USC to LSU to Notre Dame, etc...it really makes you almost have to assume any signed recruits are here for 1 year and we'll see where things are next offseason.

Seems like you're beginning to understand why the transfer portal and NIL rules are making a farce out of college sports. What kind of emotional connection is possible between college fans and athletes who come to their school for the money, stay around for a year (thus not getting much of an education), and then the best of them move on to another school team where the pay is better? Is it really enough that the compensated crew are temporarily wearing the jersey of the fans' school or alma mater? IMO, the fan-athlete psychological link is being torn apart. The NYT's "The Athletic" recently had a revealing article about all the money rich Duke alums have coughed up to pay big bucks to their basketball team players, presumably to have bragging rights if they win the Tournament. Why should we be surprised that Duke is once again in the Final Four? I would think it would be a surprise if they weren't. A segment on tonight's PBS news revealed that over 50% of the players on the teams in this year's NCAA tournament were at different schools last year. Comical and pathetic. The appeal of being a fan of a college team is being seriously eroded.

This is likely meaningless reading of the tea leaves, but Heckel and Erica McCall are following each other on Instazuk, and Heckel is also following Jeanette Pohlen. Heckel is also followed by and is following Clardy, Umeh, Stevenson, Agara, Peterson, and Swain. Of course, she's also following Morgan Valley, Caroline Ducharme, and Kaitlyn Chen at UConn and a bunch of high profile players. Probably some of this is left over from the previous recruiting cycle, but there's no linkage with the seniors (Bosgana/Demetre), which might suggest this is more recent contact. Who knows?

I see no sign that Howell has public Instazuk contact with Stanford.

Speaking of Koval, she is following Erica McCall, Clardy, Umeh, Stevenson, Ijiwoye, and Ogden. Koval's followers are not public.

Pure speculation: one scenario is that Green might not have a spot if Kate lands a high value transfer. That's the exchange that would make the roster limit work.

I’m pretty sure Green’s schooie is conditional upon availability, but the issue is whether we would deny her a non-scholarship roster spot, which is where the limit of 15 comes in. This is new territory for us and I don’t think there is a precedent.

FWIW I believe she goes to the same high school Mark Madsen did.
Does that make any difference from a recruiting standpoint? Who knows?

interesting question.

in the past, iirc the rules were no more than 15 can travel. we have had 17 players and 2 didn't travel. if she can't travel to the east coast, that might not be a big disappointment.

she doesn't play more than an average of 1 minute per game. what if she can practice with the team but not suit up for games? doesn't change much.

RE: Class of 2026+ - CompSci87 - 04-06-2025

Unlike past limits, the new limit of 15 is a roster limit. We can't have 15 scholarship players plus additional non-scholarship players. And I believe the program has 15 fully endowed scholarships available. So I don't think we will often have players on the roster in the future who don't have scholarships. However (as in the past), some might walk on initially and be given an open scholarship on a year by year basis, assuming the new rules still allow that.

RE: Class of 2026+ - BostonCard - 04-06-2025

It does raise the question of how do you establish a walk-on program if all of your roster spots are scholarship spots.  Maybe less of an issue in women's basketball, but relevant to football, where the old system allowed you to take a flyer on a walk-on who could be given a roster spot but not a scholarship and if they panned out they would earn a scholarship, and if they didn't pan out then no big deal.

It's an issue for one of my son's friends, who is a walk-on baseball player.  He has been told that with the switch to roster spots, there's no room for him on the team, even though he is more productive than many scholarship players, who have been guaranteed roster spots.  He has been advised to transfer to a community college for a year, and then get recruited as a roster-counting scholarship player the following year.  But this is a) bad from an academic perspective and b) offers no guarantee that he would be able to transfer back.  Yet another example of unintended consequences.

RE: Class of 2026+ - PVTree - 04-06-2025

Agreed... Hopefully they could amend the rule to be 15 scholies and 2 walk-ons. It's a shame that walk-ons will no longer be welcomed (of course teams can have only 13 on scholie and 2 walk-ons). They can keep the rule that only 15 travel.

Not sure if mentioned before, haven't checked the board in a while, but just noticed Mitty freshman star 6'2" Maliya Hunter forward who won CCS and WCAL player of the year honors is the daughter of Stanford Men's 1st year assistant Wayne Hunter. She is class of 2028, like recent commit out of Iowa Jhaliana Guy

Anyone who wants another glimpse of our 2025 recruits can turn on the Nike Hoops Summit Saturday where Swain and Eschmeyer are playing for the US team and Somfai for the World team.

RE: Class of 2026+ - BobK - 04-11-2025

The game is on the USA channel tomorrow at 4:30 PDT Thanks John

RE: Class of 2026+ - bl82 - 04-11-2025

Curious what others think here: does having the #3 receiving class help or hurt with recruiting in the following year’s class? I can see that PT may be harder to come by, but I can also see that having a lot more talent can make it a more fun/exciting team to play for.
