It would be ridiculous to disallow the Ivy League from maintaining the status quo. I know that Harvard offers generous aid to students across the board and I think it should be fair to the schools to continue to do so without regard to whether one is involved in athletics or not.

[*]Families with annual incomes of $75,000 or less do not pay anything toward the cost of a Harvard College education.
[*]Nearly 1 in 4 undergraduates comes from a family whose annual income is $75,000 or less.
[*]Harvard provides a $2,000 “start-up” grant to each of these students in their first year.
[*]Harvard also provides aid for low-income students to pay for health insurance, books, travel costs home, winter coats, event fees, and other activities to ensure every student can engage in the Harvard experience.

Although Ivy sports are considered D1, they really don't generate a great deal of income, etc. I loved my experience playing intercollegiate sports and am mourning what's become of today's D1 women's college basketball. I prefer the Ivy League model and I also enjoy supporting women's D3 basketball now.

I think he wants to end up in a place that will prepare him for the NBA, and be surrounded by some amount of talent so the defense can't just focus on him. I'll go with UNC, Arkansas, or Memphis.

Fascinating thread. Understand why people are upset, but some or all of the three in the portal may simply be testing the market. Tthese are intelligent people who may just want to see what's out therre.
Yes, it may be more likely than not that Betts will transfer but let's wait for the decision.
Plenty of time for the Sturm Und Drang after we know the results.

good point Warren. The first transfer free has created what we investors refer to as a free option. This can be affect one's initial choice (I'll go for some school knowing I can always transfer if it doesn't meet my fantasy expectations) or once in school (I'll see what else is there - no harm no foul - if I am not 100% pleased). Agree with others that this combined with the CoVid year has created the explosion; I keep expecting it to calm down but perhaps some degree of normalcy in policy needs to return. Reinstate need for a year off except in certain clear circumstances (such as coaching change) to encourage more forethought, and I like the earlier suggestion of limits on numbers of transfers in any year.
Everyone says Mulkey performed a miracle. She is an outstanding coach who did a great job but the unprecedented nature of the championship in her second year was a function of her ability to completely transform the team via transfers and would not have occurred in more typical times.

Let me expand a bit on my post.
We can make an intelligent guess about what's going on right now. The three who have put their names in the portal are waiting to see what offers are made to them. Stanford coaches know these athletes and are still communicating with them. TVD is certainly telling them that she wants them to stay at Stanford, but recognizes their right to enter the portal and accept a transfer offer. It's likely that she has offered to provide each athlete her take on the good and the bad associated with any offer that comes in. I have no inside info and, like everyone else, will follow this with great interest.
Coach VanDerveer has been able, more than other top teams like U Conn, to maintain a large roster of highly ranked recruits. A Stanford education may be part of the reason she has made this work. But the transfer portal and the NIL business has stirred the pot and may make it more difficult to hold on to highly ranked recruits that don't get a lot of playing time.
As far as the NIL business, I don't think the Supreme Court is responsible for the mess. I teach antitrust law, and have plenty of complaints about what the Supreme Court has done to antitrust law, but the Alston decision (which affirmed a lower court ruling requiring NIL) was a responsible application of the Sherman Antitrust Act. It gives well known athletes a chance to profit from NIL, but the decision doesn't require the NCAA to wear blinders or look the other way when things get out of control.
The NCAA, after the Alston decision, has punted on the issue, leaving individual schools and conferences to do whatever they wish. The NCAA's action may reflect the lack of consensus among the schools and conferences. Some limits on NIL compensation would be helpful, but that's unlikely to happen without a consensus. Congress could (and perhaps should) step in, but that too seems unlikely in the near term.
So yes, things are chaotic right now, and that contributes to what's happening with the transfer portal.

Those are some good thoughts. Based on social media comments by Betts' mom and someone who posted here briefly with apparently inside information, I believe the bridge between Betts and Stanford WBB has been burned. They don't think there is any guarantee Betts will be the starting post next year and I believe that is a priority.
I hope I'm wrong and by some miracle Betts returns. I would love to see her progress at Stanford. By the time she is a senior Betts will be a force under the basket.
I've read many comments on other message boards that Betts being the #1 ranked player out of high school makes a mockery of the rankings. I think the rankings metric is potential over a four year college career and in that case you have to wait until after the senior year to evaluate the accuracy of these rankings.

I'm not so sure free is really free. The school you are leaving has no choice but to try and fill your spot from the portal. Now maybe Stanford's current transfer policy won't allow filling spots from the portal, but if Stanford really wants to compete in this brand new world, it almost has to recruit the portal.

Very well said. I’ve also felt that the Betts family wanted a guarantee of role and playing time, but Tara has never guaranteed that even during the recruitment process. I sure do hope they change their minds and give Stanford another chance, but like you mentioned Mother Betts, has posted some thing’s that makes me think it’s too late.

holder of the option is the student - free to them but yes a dear cost to the universities.

The student is free to take the option of entering the portal. Once the student has formally entered the portal, the student's current school is under no obligation to continue that student's scholarship or take the student back on the team. Students that enter the portal better be pretty sure that they want to transfer.

Do you think scholarship eligibility played a role in timing for Lauren? The new quarter started the beginning of the month. Does that mean she can finish out the school year, or can the scholarship be pulled mid quarter?

Or if their current coach wants them badly enough, the coach will offer them the same scholarship to stay. Who among us hasn't second-guessed a decision we made? The odds aren't great, but I really hope the recruiting class stays together. Individual gains over team potential (championship)...I guess we're seeing those values play out.

The Supreme Court meddled in something it didn't understand and the consequence is college sports is turning into a poor copy of US professional sports with worse governance. The decision handed down was ham-handed and the impact was to wreck something precious. Yes, I blame the Supreme Court almost as much as I blame the NCAA administrators. How could a college fan see it otherwise? This is Solomon proposing we split the baby and getting credit for his wisdom.

Betts to Iowa? Could be a natural. She knows many of Hawkeyes' players intimately. They are dreaming of a National Champion with a Clark-Betts connection now that one of their players has vacated a scholarship position.

From what I've seen of Betts (admittedly not that much) my impression is that she is a decent player. Worthy of a #1 recruit in the nation? Doubtful.
As far as waiting four years, did we have to wait four years to see that Paige Bueckers, Caitlin Clark, and our own Cameron Brink were great players?
