Nice second half defensive adjustment by Wilks. Blitzed more. Rams are better than expected. Tough win.
Indeed. Great adjustment, Stafford was getting way too much time when the Niners rushed just four.
Two other notes, an incredibly bogus personal foul call on Greenlaw that led to a Rams TD. Purdy overthrew three wide open receivers on deep routes, missing perhaps three easy TDs.

Indeed re Dreith's call, hilarious at the time. The hand jesters were a great addition to the commentary.

Greenlaw might have a reputation. He’s had a fair number of personal fouls. Purdy missed those 3 downfield. But it was good to see them take the shots. Especially to Samuel on a deep route. If Purdy starts to hit those, this offense will be incredible

What I meant by Brock Purdy redefining the position is that we seemed to have gone through this evolution of QBs becoming bigger, faster, and stronger, with running becoming a bigger part of the game for them. Purdy is short by NFL standards and more quick than fast, two traits that haven't been found acceptable to NFL teams, as evidenced by the fact there wasn't anyone like him starting in the NFL previously and he was the last pick in the draft. If you were short, you had to be fast, like 40 time fast, and have a howitzer arm like Russell Wilson, who could do both.
As stated before, Purdy is off the charts quick, with his ability to see, process what he sees, make good decisions, move his feet, and get away from immediate pressure. If Purdy were in a 100 M race, he'd be at the front or leading in the first 10-20M, but he'd never finish at the front of the field.
In some physical respects, Purdy is like Tua Tagavailoa, but he wasn't the QB at Alabama. Purdy is quicker, a bit taller, and I don't think Tua's arm is appreciably stronger.

NFL needs to investigate Sean McVay. Spread Niners + 7.5. Kicks a meaningless FG to beat spread on games last play.
Kidding on the investigation. But that’s a very bad beat. Great example of why I don’t bet.

I'm no expert on these sorts of things. But I am tickled that all the NFL metrics were wrong. They still have not figured out how to measure "intangibles" like the quickness of decision-making or "slippery-ness" that is not necessarily linked to speed. It used to be that we chuckled at how Montana had gone in the 3rd round and we thought this was somehow an example of a great talent that was underestimated. Purdy makes Montana's draft look judicious by comparison. The Montana comparison, I think, is not based on any actual resemblance between the two but the comparison with the way we were pleasantly surprised when both performed much better than their draft number led us to expect.
For a while my main concern had to do with injury. Bigger quarterbacks seem to be more durable than smaller ones. But I was surprised to see Purdy is the same weight as Favre or Brady in their prime, and 15 pounds heavier than Montana. Let's hope he stays healthy and has a long career.
For the old-timers around here, is the comparison between Purdy and Fran Tarkenton a useful one? Tarkenton was even smaller than Montana, but he seemed to have that slippery escapability and accurate short to medium range passing.

I think Greenlaw definitely has a reputation.
Historically, Purdy is accurate from deep. Last year, against the Commanders and for the four games prior, he completed over 70% of his passes that were 10 yards or more. I don't know why he missed those passes, whether he was under pressure, whether his receivers have lost a step or if he was overly concerned about not throwing interceptions (he said in his post-game interview that the game came down to not turning the ball over -- and remember, he fumbled last game). It's his second game back after major surgery...I suspect he will continue to fine tune his throwing and will miss fewer of those. And of course, he had several successful sneaks...
Breath of relief after Moody went three for three with one from 57 yards. Great pickup and worth the third round pick, I suspect. Wishnowsky punted well, averaging nearly 50 yards per punt.
McCaffrey's second straight brobdingnagian game. And Deebo stepped it up after Aiyuk went down, with 38 yards on five attempts. Supposedly Aiyuk's shoulder isn't too bad. Still...only four days until their Thursday night game, the first of two.
Feeling a bit better about the OL...they gave up one sack, zero tackles for losses, one pass deflected and three quarterback hits. By contrast, the Niner defense had a sack, two tackles for loss, seven passes deflected and six quarterback hits.
Stafford -- an excellent quarterback -- had a passer rating of 67.8. Niner defense really got going when Wilks decided to be true to his roots and start blitzing more.
I thought Oliver acquitted himself well after getting a bit of a bad name.
Bottom line: 49ers have scored the third most points in the league, with 30 two games in a row. Among teams that have played two games, they're tied for 2nd in the NFL in points allowed with 30 (behind the Cowboys with 10 and the Chiefs with 30).
- Purdy is 9th in the NFL in passer rating. One of eight QBs who haven't thrown an interception.
- McCaffrey is first in rushing yards with 268. Next most is Bijan Robinson with 180.
- Aiyuk is 11th in receiving yardage (Zach Ertz is 13th in receptions with 12)
- Moody is T4 for most field goals with six. Aubrey, Elliott and Folk have seven. Elliott (Eagles) is having an interesting year...he's 3/4 from 50 yards and further...including a 61 yarder.
- Ray Ray is 9th in average per punt return.
And Ty Montgomery is #2 in the league, averaging 31 yards per kickoff return.

I suppose if I was picking out anybody at this stage for Purdy it would be Drew Brees. I’m not saying he is or will be as good as Brees. But similar size and skill set

Agree with most of what was said. People, including myself, definitely underestimated the Rams coming into this year based on last year when Stafford was unealthy. A healthy Stafford is still a top 10 QB overall, and probably top 3 as a pure passer when it comes to running the kind of quick pass offense the rams were using to neutralize our pass rush. Their Oline also looked solid, they still have playmakers on defense, though are a bit thin. Add in the fact that they found a stud in Nacua and solid coaching, and they are going to be a tough out, especially when Kupp comes back.
From our end I'm surprised it took us until after halftime to mix in more blitz and different coverages to disrupt their timing, as Stafford is a master of the timing throws and was just picking us apart.
Brock was a solid B. We scored 30 points. He didn't turn the ball over. He obviously missed a few throws that could have been big, but its a great thing when a "bad" game for your QB involves no turnovers and just missing a few shots while making his layups. It's the game where Steph Curry goes 10/15 with 25 points but 0/5 from 3. You'll take it. A Jimmy G good game usually involved at least 1 pick.
Looking around the league Brock is looking better and better relative to his peers.

Geez, that #23 guy dropped a deep TD pass. Sheesh. Must have been Purdy's fault for hitting him in the hands.
Nice win by the Niners. Was a slugfest against a team that struggled in their first two games and are better than they showed early, at least on D. The Niners' O'line is still an issue. They looked marginal tonight. Purdy was under a ton of pressure all night.

Tough chance actually. Wouldn’t call it a drop although I suspect McCaffrey would suggest he should’ve caught it. Defender did get a hand in there.
Purdy had a nice second half. He was off in the first half.
I do find it amusing that if you’re not genuflecting and suggesting that he should immediately be put into the Hall of Fame you are somehow dissing the guy. But that’s OK.
I didn’t really think they played that well and they still won easily. But I also think the Giants, especially without Barkley, are pretty bad. Heck, they were outscored 60 to zip first 6 quarters. Came back in second half against an Arizona team that’s tanking for a shot at Caleb Williams.
They get some time off now, which is always nice. Then the Cardinals. So, 4-0. Great start.

Hilariously, Andrew Luck appeared in full Civil War Union uniform as Captain Andrew Luck.
For those who don't remember there was a parody Twitter Account for Captain Andrew Luck several years back with the "Captain" writing home to his dearest mother about the news of the day, usually battling the Chiefs or Bears, etc and winning or losing he described the engagement. The florid writing style reminded me of the Civil War letters featured in the well known PBS Civil War series.
The account uses a Luck headshot photoshopped into a Civil War captains uniform. Photoshop is no longer needed.

Apropos of nothing….
Purdy was blitzed on 33 of 39 dropbacks (84.6%) - the highest blitz rate posted by any team since Next Gen Stats started measuring NFL data in 2017.
Purdy was 20-31 for 247 yards and 2 TDS when blitzed.

That TNF game...
First of all, the NFL must do something about that outrageous intentional grounding by Daniel Jones that took a sack and TFL from Dre Greenlaw that can cost him money (guys get paid for those stats). A wrist flick of the ball with the defender's arms wrapped around you, when you are 2 yds from the sideline, is NOT a legit throwing away of the ball. It is an egregious violation of sportsmanship. But Greenlaw gets a 15 yd unnecessary roughness penalty for hitting ball carrier right as whistle is blowing. Absurd.
The Niners continue to be a terrible Red Zone team. They are 20th in the NFL. They were 20th in 2022 as well. Not good for a Super Bowl contender. You'll remember I was very leery of their playoff chances last year because they were such a bad Red Zone team. With Purdy being such an excellent passer between 10-20 yards, this is inexcusable. It's inexcusable. They simply must get better on this measure. You've got McCaffrey, Samuel, Aiyuk, Kittle, and Juszczyk, plus a QB with great short area quickness. Simply no reason to not be more efficient scoring TDs. Much better on 3rd down conversions, so I'm hopeful they can get to a Top 10 RZ efficiency.
I'm a little perplexed why the Niners aren't registering more sacks, but I think the numbers will start increasing as the season goes on and they get more comfy with Steve Wilks, who seems to be very flexible with his concepts. I know Dallas is #1 in YPG allowed and some other stats, but they haven't played a real offense with a real QB. The Niners have in the Rams. The Niners are the #1 D still, IMO, with room for improvement.
McCaffrey could have easily had another 100 yd rushing game. But Shanahan clearly wanted to limit his runs. Could have really padded his stats in the 4th quarter. He's now on pace to rush for 2,000 yards. Too bad he couldn't have hauled in the TD pass from Purdy. Really surprised he didn't as he has made that catch before and usually doesn't drop anything. Maybe he can take some pointers from Deebo, who has amazingly strong hands and might be the most physical WR to ever play the game. Dude is a battering ram. But so too is CMac, and certainly Kittle as well. Usually I'm against throwing the ball short of the first down line on 3rd or 4th down, but when you've got guys who can make 2-3 yards every time they get th ball after contact in the open field, it gives the offense a potency beyond just points scored.
Speaking of that...Some people were claiming the Niners aren't as good as Cowboys because they beat the Giants 40-0 and the Niners were only up by 8 in the 3rd quarter. Well, last I checked, football is a 4-quarter game, and there are different and more sustainable ways to win than others. There is a reason the Niners are now the Super Bowl favorites. What they did to the Steelers and Giants, and to a degree the Rams, is more sustainable. While Dallas sort of had a first round knockout of the NY football outfits, the Niners beat the living shit out the their opponents over 11 rounds and then lay them flat on the canvas in the 12th. To me, the latter is more sustainable over the long haul.
Usually, you aren't Super Bowl favorite without a legit MVP candidate. Now, I could argue CMac should be a more likely MVP candidate than Brock Purdy, but I think we know the QB position is the most important. After last night's game, Brock Purdy now has the 10th best MVP odds. Shockingly, Joe Burrow - whose season is on the brink - is ahead of him. Purdy took a while to adjust to Giants' "kitchen sink" defense on a short week without a lot of preparation, but after he did, his performance was excellent. It won't be long before NFL DCs are afraid to blitz Purdy. Of course, the other option is to drop more into coverage. The Rams tried this approach and Purdy put up his worst passing game of his career. He had to make lots of throws with 8 defenders in coverage and zone blitzing. He was a little too quick on his deep balls, but he made some truly remarkable throws in that game and the offense put up 30 points. Then 4 days later he faced a blitz crazy Giants defense that gave him no time to throw and the offense put up 30 points.
[tweet]https://twitter.com/NextGenStats/status/1705060969909719514[/tweet]
How do you defend this guy? You give him a little bit of time trying to confuse him and he picks you apart with his understanding of zone coverages against passing concepts and how to fit the ball in tight windows. You heat him up and he finds answers against man coverage and is accurate in the screen game. If you force short throws, you have to worry about receivers racking up yards after the catch, as they bulldoze defenders. Then on top of that you have to stop a potent run game with arguably the most unstoppable RB in the NFL.
Again, there is a reason the Niners are now Super Bowl favorites.
