Zaire is doing fine in the NBA. FYI
Here’s a great story about Josh Childress

Josh Childress, a former Stanford star and NBA lottery pick, is thriving as a CEO in his life after professional basketball

Probably behind a paywall. He’s doing great as CEO of Landspire Group

https://www.landspiregroup.com/theteam

I thought an upbeat post was needed after the last couple of minutes of last night’s pathetic game

Fabulous memories. Where has that gone on the hardwood and the gridiron?

I was there and I’ll never forget it. We were looking right down the line of that shot toward the upper deck

Jerod Haase a head coach at the Farm
Alumni he did manage to charm
As a player not quitter
But team play is a sh*tter
Setting off the "Crap" Stanford alarm

That’s kind of my point; Williams was not overrated, he was a legit five star player and a legit NBA talent who was wasted in his COVID year at the farm. To be fair, COVID had a fair bit to do with it, as did some family deaths. But still, you look at what Williams accomplished before, during, and after his time at Stanford, and the anomaly was his time playing for Haase.

Haase should be on the Mt. Rushmore of "nice guys who can't coach." It has been brutal from day 1 to watch his team's lack of offensive coherence. For Christmas I asked Santa to send Spencer Jones a screen so that he could take the first semi-uncontested three in his career but I guess I wasn't nice enough. :)

I blame Muir of course, who needed to be dismissed years ago. And Haase with him.

I will never root against the team but I do take some consolation that every loss gets us a day closer to Haase's departure. Even Muir won't be able to hold off after this season if it continues to go this way.

So now we know two things that don't result in Spencer Jones getting screens: you asking Santa, and me yelling "Screen!  Screen already!" at my television over and over. :)

On an unrelated note, did anyone catch Boyle screaming at his player for taking a shot early in the clock instead of running it down at the end of the first half?  I'd rather have Haase as coach forever than an asshole for a coach who publicly screams at 19-year-olds for making a mistake like that.

The best coaches do it with "That look."

+1 to all of this. Sigh. We just have to wait long enough, I guess. Honestly, I'd go for a hat trick of replacements for our president, AD, and MBB coach. Leadership around the Farm is just really lagging these days...

RE: MBB Thread (5-8, 0-3) - Farm93 - 12-30-2022

I remain amazed that Haase is still the coach.   This team has more talent than most Stanford teams over the last seventy years, and yet they are unable to compete with teams in our conference.   Given Haase's MO of starting games and seasons strong and fading at the end I really can't imagine 2022-2023 will end well.  And maybe that is for the best.

Maybe Muir is a bit too slow to fire, but Haase's abilities don't stop there.  Commentators endlessly praise Haase, his insights, his skills, and more.  Recruits seem to fall under his spell too.

As I have never met Haase apparently I am not under that spell.   Haase must be a great individual, but we now have ample evidence that he is not a great basketball coach for Stanford University.

Perhaps he should be Muir's replacement given his persuasion abilities.  Fire Muir, promote Haase to AD, and then let Haase use his great skills to persuade a decent basketball coach to take his old role.

RE: MBB Thread (5-8, 0-3) - CompSci87 - 12-30-2022

Maybe he could write a letter to a decent coach every day for a year to persuade him to come to Stanford. Hmm, no, perhaps not the right technique for that kind of persuasion.

Note that this year's team has a dismal 5-8 record. And the preseason schedule wasn't that daunting. If it is really true that Haase hasn't taught his players how to screen (and made it integral to his game strategy) so that the best trey shooters have open shots, that is truly abysmal. Like many I long for the days of Monty and players like Kirschoffer, the Lopez Brothers, the Collins Brothers, Casey, Mad Dog, Art Lee, Tony Giovachini, Childress, Nick Robinson, Matt Lottich, etc.

RE: MBB Thread (5-8, 0-3) - Phogge - 12-30-2022

I would settle for Mendez, Fred Washington, Peter Sauer (RIP), Chris Hernandez and Nick Robinson.

It was very daunting. One of the hardest preseason schedules out there. We are #22 in Strength of Schedule up til this point and have played 8 Quad 1&2 games, tied for most in the country. (As you may have guessed, we lost all of them.)

You severely underestimate just how much of a joke a ton of other schools' preseason cupcake-fests are.

Ingram was passive and useless out there. Can't blame that all on Haase, though I'm sure he deserves plenty of blame for other things.

It is possible that Ingram is the most overrated five star player since Ziairw Williams, and that he is simply not that good.  But given that it seems this is a systemic problem with the team, I think he is playing for a coach who consistently gets less done with the talent he has, fails to motivate his players, and is leading a team that is going through the motions.  We wouldn’t know unless he transfers or we get a new coach, but I would bet dollars to donuts that Ingram would be less passive and useless playing in a different setting.

BC

Ya think? Ingram's best game may have been his first last year. He had a couple other excellent games early on but it has been mostly downhill since. Haase doesn't seem to know what to do with him, or Zaire.

RE: MBB Thread (5-8, 0-3) - Farm93 - 12-30-2022

I would b willing to take Vlahov, Lollie and Wingate, wouldn't mind getting Keefe too.

Though I suspect that under Haase that 1990-1991 team would get 20+ losses rather than 20 wins.  :(

RE: MBB Thread (5-8, 0-3) - BobK - 12-31-2022

I have said for years please Haase set screens for threes. I’m so wrong. Today open threes bad misses including air balls. And just like that Ingram makes a three. Stanford down 19-13

RE: MBB Thread (5-8, 0-3) - old spanish trail - 12-31-2022

The next time I see a screen set for S Jones for a catch and shoot will be the first. It's coaching malfeasance.

We’re 2-12 in threes at the half.
34.5% FG vs 60% for utes.
If we can hang around and win, it would be quite the accomplishment.

Only met Haase briefly but seems genuinely wonderful. Reminded me of Ted Lasso and then The Athletic revealed that he is indeed a brobdingnagian fan.

RE: MBB Thread (5-8, 0-3) - old spanish trail - 12-31-2022

I think he may be a good guy but he's not a good game coach.

So Haase could be a fictional character. Geesh no wonder lol
