-m.

Because there was only one base advanced - third to home.  If the game hadn’t ended maybe they would have given Taylor an error as Phillips reached second.

But it's not clear that the runner successfully advanced from third to home on Taylor's error.  All you can say for sure is that the error allowed the runner to try for home.  What allowed the runner to score was the second, non-called error.  I'd give it to the thrower, though the sweep tag, which caused Smith to move his glove too early, was not even necessary as it turned out.

Good point on error for the advancement of Phillips to 2B.  He in all likelihood would not have even tried for second, but for the boot in the outfield, which assured the ball would be headed home (as opposed to a clean fielding play and hitting the cutoff man to keep runners at first and third).

I am hoping against hope that this astonishing walk-off sequence does to the Dodgers's heads what Kirk Gibson did to the A's in 1988. A far different situation, of course, but still.  To this day, I get almost puke when I'm subjected to the endless replays of the exultant, elbow-pumping Gibson limps around the bases. Chances are that this one goes seven games, however. Two really, really good, tough-minded teams.

Dumbest pitch selection ever.  Gibson could barely turn.  No way he hits a fastball out.  Threw him a slider and sped up his bat.

RE: World Series: Game 4 - Papa John - 10-26-2020

As a Little League scorekeeper, I've seen plenty of plays like the one that ended game 4. All strictly my opinion, but in a 12-year old game...

Outfielder boots the ball--Little League error
Cut-off player's throw is to the wrong side of the plate--not a Little League error because it was catchable and easily beat the runner who was tumbling on the ground at the time
Catcher fails to catch the ball--Little League error
Pitcher does not backup the catcher--mental error, but not a Little League error

In the real MLB world, probably should only be one error, since the runner was going to take third without any error and the batter was going to take second--not sure why?--on the throw to the plate.

Lazy Little League scorekeeper would have called it a 2 RBI double.

The hardest plays to scorekeep are what I call "double pickles." Base runners on first and second try to advance on a passed ball and the ball gets tossed all over the infield as the defensive players fail to tag out the runners, who both take multiple bases. I've scored such fiascos as "E-all" or "E-many" because I can't keep track of the positions, the order in which they touched the ball, and who was ultimately responsible for allowing the runner at second to score and the runner at first to make it to third. This happened a lot at the 9- or 10-year old level, when a lot of kids are pitching and playing "real" catcher for the first time.

Lazy Little League scoreekeeper would call it a double steal.

RE: World Series: Game 4 - terry - 10-26-2020

I saw an article that said the official scorekeeper went back and charged two errors on the play -- one on the outfielder and one on the catcher.

The real error was on Dave Roberts for bringing in Jansen. He should have stuck with Graterol. Jansen has been too shaky.

Dodgers bounced back in Game 5. With Buehler still available for one more start, the Dodgers have a good shot at closing it out.

RE: World Series: Game 4 - Phogge - 10-26-2020

Taylor's misplay didn't allow Azarenko to score. Muncy's throw getting away from Smith did. The cutoff man has to have an eye on the ball and an eye on the runner. The catcher has to make the call. In college our voice signs were "Second," "Third" and "Cut (second, third)" and plain "Cut" (hold the ball). Our pitcher was to run to towards the line between second and third (if it wasn't obvious) and then figure out which base to back up.

OT: Giants real season starts now. - lex24 - 10-29-2020

Sure, they played the 60. Better than expected.  But now the real season starts. Be great if they could sign Gausman and Smyly.  Or at least one.  But I think it’s doubtful. It will be fascinating to see what Farhan does.  The Giants have plenty of money.  So don’t fall for that.  After next year, of course, they will have money to burn. But I think it’s important to start now.  If the cupboard is bare in 21, they may not be very attractive to FA’s in ‘22. And who knows what the new CBA will bring.

Is what we saw in the playoffs the future. Starting pitchers, even aces, expected to give no more than 6. And the lower guys in the rotation only to get you through the lineup twice.  If so, then the market for starters should be lower.  Sure good starters are hard to find.  Inning eaters appear to be dinosaurs.  So maybe they come cheaper.

If Giants lose Gausman and Smyly they have to find a couple guys they can slot into a rotation.  Cueto, Webb, Andersen and hoping for Beede to find it is nothing short of abysmal.

They also need another left handed bat - preferably OF. They will pick up a few relievers. They move constantly.  Of course, getting them in a good year ain’t easy.  Arms are touchy things.

In any event, it should be interesting.

RE: OT: Giants real season starts now. - Phogge - 10-29-2020

Bauer is the guy but pricy. Joc Peterson is a hot dog. I would scout Hart HS and Harvard Westlake hard if they have a season in 2021.

What NL MVP also served as a Major League umpire?

RE: OT: Giants real season starts now. - Mick - 10-29-2020

Samardzija's contract was the only one that we lost after this year, unless Posey decides not to come back at all.  We still have Belt, Cueto and Crawford for next year, and Longoria for the next two years.

Saw a web site citing the greatest career SF Giants by position.  Some are obvious, some not so much:

P - Mathewson (372-188, 2.12 ERA).  A position where Carl Hubbell and Juan Marichal are backups.  Yikes.
C - Posey
1B - Bill Terry (.899 OPS, .341 career BA).  I would have taken McCovey
2B - Frankie Frisch (.811 OPS), I would have taken Jeff Kent (.903 OPS)
SS - Art Fletcher.  Marginal (.732 OPS).  I would have taken either Crawford (.709 OPS, 3 GG, 2 AS) or Travis Jackson (HoF, great fielder, .770 OPS).  Probably Jackson.
3B - Matt Williams (.805 OPS, 4 GGs).  Jim Ray Hart slightly better hitter for SFG, nowhere near the fielder.
RF - Mel Ott
CF - Willie Mays
LF - Barry Bonds

Outfielders are no brainers.

RE: OT: Giants real season starts now. - Phogge - 10-29-2020

I loved Stretch but Terry lifetime .341 and hit .401 in 1930. Gotta take him. Travis Jackson besides having one of the great names was a HOFer and McGraw's favorite player. Freddie Lindstrom hit .311 lifetime and is in the HOF. He has to be the third baseman. Fritsch, Jackson, Lindstrom and High Pockets Kelly formed a HOF infield for a few years. Lots of people think that Kelly is the worst member of the HOF.

Who would be the first OF off the bench? There is Monte Irvin, Bobby Thomson, Bobby Bonds and Kevin Pillar.

RE: baseball trivia - Phogge - 10-29-2020

Outfielder Chuck Klein.

I'd vote Bobby; and Crawford would be the SS.  (Yester-generational players who wouldn't get on the field in this day and age don't sway me too much, even though I also believe the truly exceptional would be so in any generation).

RE: OT: Giants real season starts now. - BobK - 10-29-2020

Agree with T Bonds and Crawford.

Bonds 26 or more HRs 5 times and 40 or more steals 5 times then traded for baseball's all time jerk
at age 28. Sad

lex24 - lex24 - 10-29-2020

Should have two teams SF and NY.  So har$ to compare eras. I can do SF. I’ll leave NY to others

SP:  RH. Juan LH. Bum
RP-  Rod Beck.  Admittedly somewhat a heart pick.  Biggest stones ever. Rob Nen is prob better
C Buster
1B. Stretch
2B Kent
SS Crawford
3B. Williams
LF Bonds
Cf Mays
RF. Bonds

Will Clark first off bench.

Mgr. Bochy

Pretty easy actually

You guys are hilarious. A thread starts about the Giants' off season and it evolves into yet another trip down memory lane.

Why is everyone so fixated on the past and so uninterested in discussing the future?

Anyway, the task is signing Trevor Bauer.  And Greg Papa suggested that if the Rays aren't going to use Blake Snell as an Ace, and take him out of the WS while dominating the Dodgers, Farhan Zaidi should be on the horn trying to trade for him.

I started it talking about the off season.  Giant fans love their history.  I’d be stunned if the Giants signed Bauer.  I just don’t see them going for a 5 to 7 year 150 to 200 Million deal for a pitcher.  Agree with Papa.  But what do the Giants give up.  Maybe Bart and Wilson and a lower lever minor leaguer.  Bailey may be better than Bart anyway.....And Luciano is the SS in 22.

More than any other sport Baseball’s past is part of its present. I guess you don’t relish comparing long dead players and teams. To each his own. You wouldn’t care for Lex/Bobbbbb/Phogge lunches. In a one game championship Christy Mathewson shuts out Mays and company 1-0. Jackson with a bunt single, sacrificed over by Lindstrom and driven home by Terry with a base hit just over Crawford’s glove.

Nope.  Willie was playing shallow as always.  Nails Jackson at the plate.  Buster putting on a sweet tag.   SF wins it in bottom of 9th when Bobby leads off with a single to left, steals second. Barry walks and Willie drives one up the right centerfield gap to win it.  You can pick either Willie.....

To me Bobby is the most underrated SF Giant. He was brilliant. Such an incredibly fluid athlete. I loved to watch him. Five tool player. Much better arm than Barry. Unfortunately he obviously had his demons. There’s no other way to explain how a guy who was that great a baseball player was constantly getting traded. And I’ve always felt the enormous chip on Barry’s shoulder was as a result of Bobby’s treatment in baseball. Of course I have no way of actually knowing that. Just playing amateur psychologist. It’s too bad. Barry Bonds could have been the Michael Jordan of baseball. He had everything.

RE: OT: Giants real season starts now. - OutsiderFan - 10-29-2020

The Giants may have the richest ownership group in all of sports, let alone MLB.  They went after Stanton and Harper, remember.

Bauer is the kind of guy worth the extra years because he is such a fierce competitor who has a relentless drive to be his best and challenge conventional thinking to do it. He's got the intensity of a Verlander or Scherzer or Bumgarner.

I don't know who the Giants would or could trade for Snell, but here's what I do know. They have two potentially legit starters in the minors in Hjelle and Corry. Trevor Bauer would stabilize the rotation for 5-7 seasons. He'd be the best FA Pitcher the Giants have ever signed, superior to Barry Zito and Johnny Cueto.
