RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-22-2018

Shaky start for Valenzuela - bogey, bogey, bogey. The latter from a lipped out 3 footer. She is 2 down.

Wang is all square after 5
Aubert is 2 up after 5
Liu is 2 down after 3
Lee is all square after 2. She missed a 4 footer for par to lose the 2nd after winning the 1st.

Every time Golf Channel has showed a Stanford golfer this afternoon, they have lost a hole. Lee now has missed short par putts on 2 and 3.  Stanford trails in 4 of the 5 matches.

Crap, I'd forgotten that we were playing 36 holes today.  I'm just coming down from the Tennis champiosnhip, and I'm  not sure I am ready to re-invest in following the golf tourney.

Not a good start; we are down 4-1.

Aubert is up 1 through 6.
Wang is down 1 through 7.
Liu is down 3 through 4.
Valenzuela is down 2 through 4
Lee is down 1 through 3

Stanford playing like a tired team. Lee bogeys the 4th to fall behind 2 down.

Even when good things happen, it is not enough. Wang almost holed her tee shot on the par 3 7th. But Stoll also hit it close, about 6 feet. They halved the hole with birdies.

HOW IS THERE MORE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP ACTION RIGHT NOW I AM TOO EMOTIONALLY DRAINED FROM TENNIS

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Farm93 - 05-22-2018

They probably are a tired team.   Since 6 or 7 holes into Day #1 they have played with no margin for error.   Often playing entire days knowing the best 4 scores had to hold all day to make the match play portion of the event.

If they rally up, that will be great.   However, getting to the semi-finals in this match play format should be considered a good week.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-22-2018

Valenzuela starts out bogey bogey bogey par bogey. She is 2 down.
Lee starts out par bogey bogey bogey par. She is 2 down.

Stanford needs for its best players to turn things around.

I don't understand why fatigue explains our deficit.  I'm going with the "we hate the first seven holes" explanation.  It's probably gotten into our psyches.

A comeback would surprise no one.

Thing is, the same applies to Arizona.  They were the last team in after a horrible, no good, forgettable fourth round.  Then, they had to come from behind to beat a tough UCLA after giving up an early lead.  I see no reason why we would be more tired than they would.

Liu, Valenzuela, or Lee will have to fight back from two or three down.  The good news is that there are still plenty of holes to play.

Agree with Hulk and Bos. We have struggled all week with the front nine, and we started on the back nine this morning, so we got off to a better start. If we can keep things close through the front nine then we'll have more opportunities on the back. Fingers crossed...

UofA was cruising and then had a bad day, likely a harder day than any of Stanford's rounds.
However, Stanford had no margin for error (overall score & 5th player back-up) for 4 days in a row.   That's got to be mentally draining.   And since golf is really a mental game, that 4 day grind might be too much.

FWIW - I do like the idea that they hate the front seven.  Though they will need to learn to love it overnight if they play 'Bama tomorrow.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - BigEasyCard - 05-22-2018

No way we fans can be as tired as the players.

Geaux Cardinal!

I definitely think that Liu and Wang will take home some bad memories of the front 9. But the shots that I have seen (especially weak putts) looked like fatigue. Or a bit of post-lunch funk.

Lee's front 9s since the horrible start on Friday - 34, 34, 34, 34 (match play score this morning).  Her start today definitely not indicated by her most recent play.

I have no explanation for Valenzuela unless her wrist injury is bothering her. Or it could be just a bad day.

Btw, Alabama is rolling over the Trojans. Ahead by 2 holes in each of the first three matches on the back 9. They look very solid.

That's not entirely right.  We made the cut pretty comfortably, and made the final round by a fair margin.  My memory might be a bit off on this, but I seem to recall that after round 2 we were already within the top-15 and after round 3 we were within the top 8.  I won't say it was not stressful, but we had a few shots to spare every day.

Today, though, is a different story.

Stanford in a deep hole.

Wang now 3 down with 6 to play
Liu is 3 down with 8 to play
Valenzuela is 5 down with 9 to play

Aubert and Lee are both all square in their matches.

Comfortable margin looked better with 2 birdies on 18 to wrap up Day 4.   Even if last two players posted a combined 3 over par instead of 2 under par, Stanford would have had to go to that tie breaker too.   As once again the 5th best score was too high to keep Stanford in the mix.   Two double bogeys on 18?....eliminated!

I am not sure comfortable applies there given the number of high scores on that course, but sure at the very end of day #4 it looked like Stanford would make the cut as long as no one posted a snowman.

Doesn't matter too much at this point.   UofA is showing that they are in better form this afternoon.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - BostonCard - 05-22-2018

It's looking pretty dire.  We will need at least one player to come back from 4 holes down with about 8 to go.  I wouldn't say never until the last hole is conceded, but it looks like this will be the end of the road.

Regardless of the final result, 4 consecutive NCAA semifinals, 2 NCAA Championship match appearances and 1 national title in the last four years is a tremendous accomplishment, particularly since we didn't have as much of a pedigree prior to Coach Walker's arrival, as say, men's golf has had.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Hulk01 - 05-22-2018

Yes, a terrific accomplishment.  The sport seems to be getting harder at the top, with the top talent concentrated in three or four schools.  This team lost so much of its mojo in the last couple weeks and still got the semis.  Wait until next year, and let's hope Calista Reyes gives us a terrific #4.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-22-2018

Casey Danielson has a record that may never be broken. In 8 match play rounds, she was 7-1. That's absolutely incredible.

Shannon Aubert can match Danielson's 7 victories with a win today.  By my count, she is 6-3 in her career. Aubert is all square in her match through 13.

Stanford still trails badly in 3 matches - 4 down, 3 down, 4 down.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - 2006alum - 05-22-2018

To paraphrase Monty Python, we're not dead yet! Lee up by one, and Aubert A/S, so if we can win those two, we just need either Liu to win 3 in 5 or Valenzuela to win 4 in 6 to tie and go to a playoff. Unlikely, sure, but not impossible! I have faith. GO CARDINAL!
