RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - OutsiderFan - 09-17-2023

What will be really interesting is if Farhan Zaidi gets a raise or a pay cut. He's not in any demand by anyone, so if the Giants extend his contract  - as they say they will - and pay him more than his original deal, it will be another area with which to take umbrage with the Giants' milquetoast ownership.

The last MLB Farm Rankings in mid-August had the Giants #14, but, that's behind:

#6 Dodgers
#9 Padres
#12 D-Backs

All teams in their division who are already more talented. And, just as significantly, the Brewers (#3), Cubs (#4), Reds (#5) all likely playoff teams, plus the Nationals (#8) and Mets (#11) who have more talent, are also all ahead of them in the prospect area too, and the Mets just hired the guy who built the Brewers system to #3.

The only way to improve is by signing DIFFERENCE MAKING free agents that cost a shit ton of money, and the Giants are not willing to do this. So why should anyone pay any attention to this team? Give me one good reason that is backed by anything other than blind hope and some misguided "you are a fan, support your team" nonsense.

Like Stanford, I'll bother to care when management shows they care.

I don't care if they care. I just want them to be effective.

To clarify…

Greg Johnson has stated that Zaidi’s option for 2024 has been exercised.  He is now under contract for one more year.  Kapler is also under contract through 2024.

If we don’t see substantial progress next year, I feel comfortable in saying that Johnson will make changes before the 2025 season.

As for farm rankings, I don’t put much credence in them.  For example, Bailey never rated at the top of prospects at any point in his minor league career.  Today, I wouldn’t trade Bailey for any young catcher in the game.  Things can changes very quickly as guys make their way to the bigs.

Also, to suggest SF is unwilling to spend money is a fallacy.  Last off-season proved that to be total canard.  Unfortunately, this year, there is a very limited pool of premier FA’s.  It will be very interesting to see what Zaidi does.  He knows he is under the gun.

Finally, I will always pay close attention to the team. I have since 1958 through good years and bad. Why stop now?

Same. I've been rooting for them since the late 1960s, same with Stanford, great season or ill. And feel the same way about Bailey. Best case, he'll be (I think) a Bill Freehan style catcher, worst case Bob Brenly.

Kapler and Zaidi had better figure a way to pull a rabbit out of a hit. Yesterday's display, to me, was endemic of a season that's gone off the rails. Poor focus -- witness Doval's failure to pick up a ball for the final out. His body language around the mound is awful. I know he has talent, but I worry that he's catching/caught whatever afflicted Hunter Strickland.

Those rookies will have to take a momumental jump next year, and I think they're certainly capable of it. Schmitt is an interesting example to me, the worst WAR at -0.8 of all the rookies. Started out like his hair was on fire, then major league pitchers figured out he can't hit major-league off-speed pitching. Generally speaking, the pitchers seem very strong. I think Matos and Luciano will step up. Wade and Estrada should be strong for a while. I hope Pederson won't be back...haven't seen a major league baseball player that out of shape in a looooong time. Hope Crawford is gone or relegated to third string, though I hate to say it.

Haniger let a ball drop right in front of him in LF, Arizona scored two runs subsequent to that hit. I can't tell if Haniger is hurt, or he just runs like a 60 year old.

Or both? All's not lost, however, because Krukow said in the ninth inning that, "as soon as Haniger gets his timing down, he will hit that pitch a long way."

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - lex24 - 09-20-2023

Tom Verducci had a terrific article on the Giants being the most boring of the contenders.  He focused on the lack of stars, lack of athleticism and speed, the dependence on openers and bullpen games (Giants starters average the fewest number of pitches of any team.  It’s not close.). Constant lineup shuffling. Mix and match etc.

He is spot on. I watch upwards of 150 Giants games a year. And I have  been a diehard for over 60 years. I dislike their approach. Aesthetically it’s awful. Which essentially is what Verducci is saying. And he’s hoping that this isn’t the baseball of the future. With which I could not agree more.

He’s not saying the Giants, as currently constructed, should not be taking this approach. In fact he gives Kapler and FZ credit for squeezing out wins. He’s saying the approach is fundamentally unsatisfying from a fans perspective. I agree with that. Completely.

Prior to the season, Buster Olney picked the Giants to finish 4th.  He added that from a fans perspective a major problem is that the Giants do not have a player that makes a 10 year old want to buy his jersey.  Simplistic.  But accurate.

The Giants are my first sports love. I will always be a big fan. But I am nowhere near as invested in this team, as I’ve been in the past. Because, as I said, aesthetically, this is a very hard team to watch. Like Verducci I am hoping  that the Giants are not modeling baseball of the future.

Listened to Krukow for a few minutes driving back from walking the dog at the park. He was talking about the pretty much the same thing, and said baseball isn't coming back from where they are. . . .sad.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - OutsiderFan - 09-20-2023

Just watching the Giants lowlights against Arizona drives home how boring the Giants are. There were several instances of D-Backs players tearing around the bases or chasing down fly balls with breakneck speed. I just SMH at how the Giants have nobody on the field who makes you think "he's pretty fast."

And during the highlight, I heard Bob Brenly say "the Giants lead the majors in errors by far, so put pressure on them by running."

Can't hit for power. Can't hit for average. Have no speed. Are 20th in HR and OBP, but 6th in strikeouts. It's a miracle the record is as good as it is.

I'm now feeling the best they can do is 80-82, but I'll be rooting like hell for them to go 5-6 because how cool would it be to have gone 81-81 for the first time in franchise history in 2022, and then pull it off again in 2023??!?!

The worst thing that could have happened did happen - the 2021 season.  It only reinforced the notion the the Zaidi Way is the right way.  It was nothing more than a Potemkin Village of a season.  In fact, the Braves serve as the gold standard - eight regulars currently have enough plate appearances to qualify for the batting title v. only three for the Giants.  Three Atlanta hurlers have already pitched over 162 innings v. one for SF.

I hope the Braves win the World Series.  Perhaps that will get baseball back to basics - find a group that can be penciled into a line-up every day whether the opposing pitcher is left-handed or right-handed and let them go.  And stop the madness of bullpen games.

If we haven’t learned anything else from this experiment, there is a lot more to building a winning, exciting team than being “the smartest guy in the room”.

I have been fighting against the notion that 2021 was a result of the Zaidi way for a long time. 2021 was a result of a resurgent Buster and the Brandon‘s having their best year. (In part helped by the fact that Buster didn’t play in 2020 and the others had short season. Meaning they were healthier and “fresher” in ‘ 21 then they had been in a long time. And then a lot of things that went well around them.) In other words, that was a team that had actual stars to build around. Something that has been sorely lacking since 2021.

I knew there would be a brobdingnagian drop off once Posey retired. Because there was no way the Brandon’s were going to repeat. And, of course, they also let Gausman go. Which is why I predicted 80 wins in ‘22. And also why I predicted 78 this year.

Course I think I predicted 75 wins in ‘21. I was a little off that year…..

I’m with you on the Braves. Although I hate that freaking chant. That is the best organization in baseball. And they have locked up an incredibly exciting core for several years. They are the model. But I’ll bet you right now they don’t win it. I mean, when was the last time the best team in baseball actually won the World Series?

The truncated season of 2020.  The Dodgers were clearly the best team in the majors that season.  Of course, some of us don’t recognize that championship.   ; )

I knew there would be a of immense proportions drop off once Posey retired.

Of course, some of us don’t recognize that championship.   ; )

That includes me!

Remember David Villar? He was named the PCL MVP. First won by Lefty O'Doul (1927), also won by Joc Pederson (2014). Won 3x by Steve Bilko. Villar's stats were good, not riveting (.273/.370/.498/.868) with 16 HRs in 72 games. In 46 games with SF, he batted .145/.236/.315/.550.

Crawford will be eligible to return on the last day of the season and I think it is nearly a guarantee that he will play (even if only for one inning).  He deserves a final bow before either retiring or moving on.

Without doubt, he is the greatest SS in Giants franchise history.  IMO, only one other Giants position player in the SF era can make a similar claim (indisputably the best at his position in franchise history), Willie Mays.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Bonds. That completes the OF (left to right - Bonds, Mays, Ott).

1B - Bill Terry
2B - ?
SS - Brandon Crawford
3B - ?
C - ?
RHP - Christy Mathewson
LHP - Carl Hubbell

More research needed to complete the team….
