Solomon Thomas signed with Stanford, despite an offer from Texas.  Noor Davis and Reilly Gibbons signed with Stanford, despite offers from all of the Big 3 in Florida.  Jordan Watkins signed with Stanford, despite offers from everywhere, including in-state UGA.  Pulling kids away from the hometown favorite is not so uncommon for Stanford anymore.  There was a time when Stanford's competition was the hometown favorite (wherever that might be for a particular recruit) and Notre Dame (the other national recruiting school).  Now Stanford's main recruiting obstacle (as well as its best recruiting asset) is its own admissions office.

Thomas notwithstanding, we still struggle beating Texas for Texas recruits.  We have also historically struggled getting Michigan and Ohio recruits away from Michigan and Ohio State, respectively.

One interesting thing is that towards the end of the article, it says that Cameron Scarlett may not redshirt.

More importantly, some frosh could play according to David Shaw.

Of the first group mentioned, most are obvious as to why. Irwin because he is good, Annan because of depth issues, Meeks a combination of both (particularly if Lyons bolts), and Tyler probably because it doesn't take as much learning of a system to return punts.

I'm a little surprised we didn't see Bailey mentioned as a player who could play early. The roster is pretty bare of kickers - Ukropina listed as P/K and Alex Robinson listed as P.

While I wouldn't be completely surprised if Scarlett played during his frosh year, I would be a little surprised if he played much given our current roster at RB - though perhaps Shaw was less encouraged by the run game over the final four games than I had thought.

I think Irwin & Annan are the most likely.  McCaffrey & Sanders seem to have punt/kick returns covered - highly doubtful a true frost would see time back there.

Scarlett - Redrum - 02-05-2015

Of course, we are all on the outside looking in, but I think projecting Scarlett to play immediately coming off a knee injury might be a stretch.  Some people do heal and recover faster than normal, but  Scarlett's older brother got a reputation as somewhat brittle in an injury-punctuated career at Kal.

In the presser, Shaw said that Bailey would probably specialize as a punter and maybe a kickoff guy.  Sounds like he will be given a chance to placekick if no one else steps up.

Remember Beall is a walk on so they can't talk about him yet.  Bailey made 4 FGs 47 to 54 yards last season.

Bob, did the coaches talk about a change in approach for 2016?  Seems that Stanford has offered a lot of juniors in the past 2 days.  I wonder if they are anticipating that the NCAA will approve a December signing period and making adjustments to ensure that Stanford is not left behind.  Or perhaps they are being more aggressive with top recruits as some suggested they needed to be.

From this story, sounds like Dec early signing period may have strong support from the conferences.

How do we deal with it for other sports that already have early signing periods?
