Both correct, it was Frank Howard. Signed up to play his last season in Japan, first at bat wrenched his back, never played again.

The baseball draft started in 1965
Since then only one undrafted player has made the Hall of Fame. How is it ?
Part 2 who is the lowest drafted player to make the Hall of Fame ?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - skip75 - 02-27-2026

I think lowest drafted is Mike Piazza.
I'll have to ruminate a bit longer on an undrafted HOFer.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 02-27-2026

Piazza is correct. Drafted by Tommy Lasorda as a favorite to Piazza’s dad an old friend.

Undrafted?

Hmmmh, do foreign players count?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 02-27-2026

No foreign players excepted. Great question however

Realize I never answered.. Geordie Howe only had two Geordie Howe hat tricks in his career, despite his penchant for fighting and his long career with 2241 games played.

The career record for most Gordie Howe hat tricks is 18! By Rick Tocchet. Brenden Shanahan was next with 17.

Bruce Sutter undrafted elected to the Hall of Fame

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - Mick - 03-01-2026

Luis Arraez of the Giants has three batting titles. If he wins one more, he joins a group that currently includes just 13 players with four or more batting titles. 11 of the 13 are in the Hall of Fame.

Who are the 13? And who are the two not in the Hall of Fame?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - skip75 - 03-02-2026

I'll give it a shot.
Ty Cobb, Rod Carew, Ted Williams, Tris Speaker, Honus Wagner, Joe DiMaggio, Rogers Hornsby, George Brett, Roberto Clemente, Stan Musial, Tony Gwynn in the HoF.
Not in - Pete Rose & Joe Jackson

Great response! You hit on Cobb (12), Carew (7), Williams (6), Wagner (8), Hornsby (7) Musial (7), Gwynn (8), Clemente (4)

Close: Rose (3), Brett (3), DiMaggio (2), Speaker (1)

Four more:
 - Former 19th century player, played one season for the Giants in the 20th century
 - Former Giant for a few years. 3B
 - Born in San Francisco, Sacred Heart HS, played for Detroit, hit between .393 and .403 in his four batting titles.
 - One recent player had four batting titles in five years, known as an HR hitter.

Shoeless Joe Jackson never won a batting title. Second highest career average, never won the batting title, not even when he hit .387 (Cobb, .419), .408 (Cobb, .409), .395 (Cobb, .398), .382 (Sisler, .407, Speaker, .388)

Based on the hints, how about Bill Madlock (not in the Hall) and Harry Heilmann?

Based on the hints, how about Bill Madlock (not in the Hall) and Harry Heilmann?

Nicely done. Madlock, ex-Giant for 2.5 years, not in the Hall. Harry Heilmann, born in SF, Sacred Heart Prep, lifelong Tiger, reputed to be the slowest man in baseball, nicknamed "Slug". Sort of the Krukow/Kuiper of his day, became a legendary broadcaster, died young from lung cancer. Posthumously elected to the HoF. Former teammate Cobb tried to get him elected before his death, but...HoF politics, as usual.

The others are Miguel Cabrera, Detroit slugger and Triple Crown winner (2012). Eligible for the HoF in 2029, will likely be first ballot. 511 career HRs. And finally Dan Brouthers, played 1879-1904, five batting average championships. Physically a giant for his day at 6'2", 210 lbs. Led NL in OPS six consecutive seasons, almost never struck out, 238 strikeouts in 7,691 plate appearances. 206 triples, hit 23 triples as a 36 year old. Retired at age 38, came back to play for the NY Giants at age 46, 0 for 5. Career slugging percentage the highest until Babe Ruth. Good friend to John McGraw, worked for the Giants for 20 years.

Good guess….

Clemente had 266 (the highest total for a player debuting after 1945).  The career leader had 449.
