Shaw has said on multiple occasions that he does not believe you can make a player tough; the coaches have to identify and recruit tough players. Agree or disagree as you like.Â

Agree.

Very hard to make a passive athlete tough. But not for a second do I believe that Shaw was implying you can't make a tough athlete tougher

I've seen enough football over my life to conclude soft teams can in fact become tougher and tough teams can in fact become soft. Tough teams can become soft with the same coaching leadership that once made them tough. Soft teams can become tougher in a coaching transition. What I have never seen a tough team become soft, then tougher under a given head coach.  I doubt individual players become softer, because football is a brutally competitive endeavor, but teams as a whole absolutely can.Â

Demetris Robertson visits into South Bend where he "bumps into" Golden Tate. Richard Sherman needs to find excuses to be on campus. He says Stanford is still at the top (this is the first time I've seen confirmation that we are at the top). He is taking FOUR AP classes including Calculus. Sounds like a Stanford kid to me.

Wow, great news on Robertson. He is the deep threat that Stanford needs to keep opposing safeties honest. Rector is graduating soon and Sims' whiff this Saturday suggested that the team does not have a replacement. I still have my doubts that Stanford will land him, but I hope I am wrong.

I think you're being a little too hard on IBS, TrumpCard. The play to which you refer was kind of unique. The CB's hand went right over the opening of his facemask (where your eyes can see out) as the ball was coming down, and then, the same hand grabbed his facemark and jerked Sims' head. Not even Fred Biletnikoff could have caught that ball. And frankly, watching the replay, it should have been either a PI penalty, Facemark penalty, or both.

Does anyone have a link to the reply of the missed catch by IBS?

The entire game is being replayed tonight at 7:30 p.m. I will have to check my tivo.

You have a TiVo?

Jeez, tivo is relatively new. I sometimes still slip and say that I am going to "tape" a game if I can't be at home to watch it live.

There is probably a compny that will transfer your CDs to 8-Track. I remember paying to have 45s transferred to 8-track.

Don't have a link, but I think his response was, "Darn!!!"

Still hoping Stanford can land Trevor Speights, who now has 847 yards rushing (282 ypg) and 10 TDs through 3 games. He's on pace to beat his record setting 2014 season, in which he posted 2,655 yards rushing (241 ypg) and 28 TDs in 11 games.

It looks like two of the highly ranked Plan B kids are off the board. Eboh committed to UT and Kemp cut his list down to 4 that do not include Stanford. FWIW, Kemp's grandfather (his football mentor) prefers a school that is not in the top 4 (Stanford?).Â

Sounds to me like Kemp's grandpa might have preferred us? But he wants to enroll early, and even that aside being a Plan B probably isn't going to impress a kid who is Michigan's Plan A.

Rankings for top high school teams in the country:

You'll recognize several schools that are home to Stanford recruits.
IMG (Nauta)
Allen (Onwuzurike)
Centennial (McKinley, Ulloa)
Mater Dei (C. Robinson)
Chandler (Rand)
Center Grove (Swann)
Bosco (Wyatt Davis '17)
Swann probably has the lowest profile of the listed recruits, but he's the star of the Center Grove team, which has delivered some terrific performances so far. He's a very solid Plan B offer and could end up being a significant contributor at DE if he chooses Stanford. I'm looking out for an offer from UDFG though because it's tough to beat UDFG for kids from the midwest. In fact, I think Blake Lueders (c/o 2010) was the last kid from the midwest to choose Stanford over UDFG.Â

I've been to Mater Dei several times for volleyball tournaments. Just an amazing physical plant, with stunning resources devoted to athletics. I would say easily equal to or better than most CSU's I've seen. The photos genuinely don't do it justice.

Mater Dei has been an athletic power house since at least the 1960s.

More on Trevor Speights. Apparently, his big night last Friday pushed him into the top all-time spot for rushing yards in the Rio Grande Valley. He's on pace to end up #4 all-time in the state of Texas.Â
