I think part of it is getting on more kids (certainly the elite kids) earlier.Â We just offered 5-star DT Rashan Gary.Â It's great that we offered him now, as it seems early enough, but the list of schools who had already offered (and have been recruiting him) is very very long, some have been recruiting him since last year.Â The longer you wait to start recruiting these guys (and for really highly rated guys I think that probably means an offer) the harder and harder it will be to make up ground against the other options.Â I can imagine you would even get into situations where they're overwhelmed with the offers and interest and just don't have the time to research somewhere new or go to another camp or whatever.Â I think the point is guys who are elite need to be identified and offered early (maybe it means more offers, maybe not).Â If you find out come summer that they just won't make the admissions cut-off or whatever that's fine, they have plenty of time to go somewhere else, but if you don't get on them early they'll already be somewhere else by the time you get on it.

I haven't seen anyone talk about a "sweet spot" for Stanford recruiting other than Matt Squeri over on the Bootleg. Neither that phrase nor anything similar is in any of the Anderson quotations.

I think Fleming's point is simpler.
Harbaugh was an aggressive recruiter in that he extended an "offer" to any high school football player with basic motility, sorting out who he really wanted later. Shaw seems quite opposed to that "figuring out later" part and is less aggressive, or more circumspect and deliberate in choosing which players to tell they have an offer.
Fleming thinks a little more of the former would net Stanford a few more top recruits.

I think the exclusivity of the Stanford brand is strengthened by Shaw's approach.Â He has said Stanford won't offer a recruit until seeing his transcripts, and I'm assuming that means at leas Frosh and Soph years of High School, and most favorably, the first semester of Junior year as well.

Toward that end, there is no reason Stanford can't contact recruits telling them they are considering them for a Stanford offer, without actually offering.Â If a kid starts getting scholarship offers from Alabama, Florida State, USC, etc. when a Soph, he's probably getting the picture he is seen as an elite prospect.Â When Stanford shows interest, it's going to tell him he is also being considered for his academic performance, but given the nature of the academic process, it makes total sense for Stanford to withhold offers until after the football factories.Â

The best approach is probably to send letters to prospects Stanford is following, illustrating Stanford is interested, but can't offer a scholarship until further classes and tests are taken.Â If it appears the recruit shows interest in Stanford, make non-committable offers until further data is known about the recruit's academic performance.Â When it looks like things are looking good, make the offer committable.Â Other factors that can influence offers might be willingness to attend Junior Day and Stanford camps.

Something tells me Stanford does something quite similar to this because it makes a lot more sense than offering a bunch of guys who may have no chance to get admitted, and it bolsters the Stanford brand.

One quibble: I don't think we should equate an extended offer the start of recruiting HS player.Â We can approach, chat, invite to camps, make Stanford's intentions known, provided he does his academic work and continues to develop his game as well.Â We do need to be doing this a lot: identifying players in their Freshman and Sophomore years who seem to have the requisite academic seriousness to do the work, and are also elite players.Â And worth talking to players who are elite and maybe willing to put in the work.Â But if, by the time they get to their Junior year, the student isn't doing the work, I doubt the light will suddenly go on and he'll become an ace student.

I assume that this is the process for our coaches.Â I don't know that an explicit offer coming a few months earlier in the process would make much of a difference.

Ok, I'm here to happily eat my dose of crow about giving up hope on Reid in an earlier post. Oh ME of little faith! (In Hulk's powers of prognostication).

Getting a LOI from ?Meeks would cap a very satisfying day.

Actually, I doubt it. Here's what probably happens:

1) web site designer is told they need to have a bio page up like, immediately after the LOI hits because that's when fans are interested. So
2) the designer mocks up a biographer and tries to "hide" it on some nonpublic sandbox page.

So probably a screwup. I bet LSU would do it for any recruit they have even a marginal chance of signing. It's just smart preparation.

I bet we get Meeks. Not to rag on Hulk's prognostication skills, but we know in some fields a simple algorithm bests experts. (See... the Apgar score, for example.)

Here's my simple algorithm:

Are they admitted?
IF YES: They are coming.
IF NO: They are not.

I would put this predictor up against anyone.
