I would guess Yankees - because they've won a lot of World Series (so the percentages are with me) and they've often had a reputation for being into "glitziness".

Yes you're correct. Good pull and sound reasoning.  You get 1/2 credit.  What was the year?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 08-27-2022

1946.

George Yardley?

George Yardley, Newport Harbor HS '46, Stanford '50, 7th overall pick in 1950 draft, was an eight-time NBA All Star. Scored 2001 points in 1957/8, a 72 game season, so he averaged 27.8 ppg.  Also averaged 10.5 prg as a 6'5" small forward, and that was with 7'0" center, Walter Dukes.

George is still in Top 100 in both career ppg (19.2) and career rpg (9.6), #92 and #96 respectively.

That great year, Yardley played for the Detroit Pistons. 2nd best scorer was long time coach Gene Shue, Dick Maguire was 6th man, and Nate "Sweetwater" Clifton was 7th man.

Whst year was Yardley’s first in the NBA ?

His first year in the NBA was the 1953/54 season, at the age of 25.  He was drafted into the NBA in the 1950 draft, played a year of AAU ball, served in the Navy for two years, then went to the NBA.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 08-27-2022

For what team did Frankie Albert play his last season of pro football?

After Albert what Stanford back was the Indians next left footed placekicker?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 08-28-2022

Albert played in Canada. Don’t recall for who. I do recall my mom telling me. She knew Albert at Stanford

New one. I think we could all guess that Bob Feller had the most starts as a pitching teenager since 1900. However most teen starts was a Giant at 5 post 1950 and a future Giant at 11 who were they ?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 08-28-2022

Mike McCormick. Either 5 or 11.

Albert played for the Galgary Stampeders.

Actually Braden Beck was an end and a Lefty placekicker.

What new rule was the vehicle that caused Stanford to lose the 1958 Big Game?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 08-28-2022

Bonus Baby McCormick is 5 with the NY Giants
Now for the other ?

Phogge I think it’s spelled Calgary. Lol lol

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 08-28-2022

You of all people have no business talking spelling now that Big Red is up there with Grayson, Reynolds and Hamilton. LOL. Plus I’d rather talk Gal’s than Cal’s.

How about Johnny Antonelli for #11?

Two point conversion: Cal 16 Stanford 15.

I believe Cal scored 2 TD’s and converted 2 two point conversions and Stanford scored 2 TD’s (with no conversions) and an FG.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 08-28-2022

It was Ray Sadecki at 11

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 08-28-2022

Good job Giants. Skip Face stopped on a pitchout by the Bears in the 4th Q.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 08-29-2022

50s trivia. What MLB pitcher had the most strikeouts in the 50s?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BostonCard - 08-29-2022

A Mickey Mantle baseball card sold for $12.6 million on Sunday, smashing the previous record for the sale of a piece of sports memorabilia…

What was the piece of memorabilia and how much did it sell for?

BC

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 08-29-2022

50’s... Robin Roberts or Warren Spahn.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 08-29-2022

Great guesses but no.
