You guys need to brush up on Niner history.

Jim Powers... USC
Jim Cason... LSU
Hal Ledyard... Chattanooga
Maury Duncan... SF State

Good ones.  Incidentally, one of the 13 dual MLB/NBA players was the first one to shatter a basketball backboard in an NBA game:

1. Gene Conley
2. Dave Debusschere
3. Danny Ainge

Eddie O’Brien didn't play in the NBA.

Chuck Connors

MLB/NBA players

1. Gene Conley
2. Dave Debusschere
3. Danny Ainge
4. Chuck Connors, a/k/a Kevin Joseph Aloysius Connors - He shattered the first NBA backboard during a game. But not during a slam dunk.  It was a length-of-the-court pass that broke the backboard in 1946.

Of the remaining nine:

* One is the only one to have won championships in both sports.
* One is the only Canadian.
* One played for the Warriors.
* One played for the Giants (in New York).
* One was drafted by seven separate baseball teams and went to a Pac-10 school
* One had a brother who had a longer pitching career
* One played MLB in WWII.

Chuck Conners both sports I see answers while I was on the previous page
Cason was a DB when I saw him play.
Did Powers throw a pass ?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 08-26-2022

Powers threw 49, Cason threw 23.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 08-26-2022

Dick Groat played both

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 08-26-2022

Sorry, Cason threw 13. Tittle was hurt.

MLB/NBA players

1. Gene Conley won the World Series with the Braves and three straight titles with the Celtics (1959-61)
5. Bobb is right, Dick Groat played a year in the NBA and had a substantive career with the Pirates and Cardinals.
6. Johnny Gee played with the Giants and Pirates in MLB and the Syracuse Nationals/Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA.
7. Hank Biasatti was the only Canadian, playing for the Toronto Huskies in 1946 and the Philadelphia Athletics in 1949.
8. Mark Hendrickson went to WSU, and was drafted seven times into MLB, all between the 13th and 32nd round of drafts between 1992 and 1997.
9. Cotton Nash played for the Warriors in SF, then a few games with the White Sox and Twins..
10. Dick Ricketts played with the Hawks and Royals for a few years, then pitched for the Cardinals for a few games.  His brother was an end-of-the-bench sub for eight years in the 1960s.
11.  Howie Schultz played baseball full time in WWII, then for a few years afterward. He helped the Minneapolis Lakers win a championship in 1952.
12. The only one I knew for sure was Ron Reed, who pitched for the Phillies on their 1980 world series winning team, and played for the Detroit Pistons from 1965-67. He had a 19 year pitching career.
13. Steve Hamilton played for the Lakers from 1958-1960 and pitched for 12 years for the Giants, Cubs, White Sox, Senators, Indians, but mostly the Yankees.

Season ticket holders in those days. Easy. Did anyone see my nicknames for the prediction thread? van Eeghan for Colgate, Plunkett for Stanford. Both were starters on the Super Bowl Champion Raiders in 1980. . . .van Eeghan's nephew (I think) was in my daughter class through middle school. Not many van Eeghans around. . .
