I'll bet this is nothing more than hedging his bets. He's a ways away from admission (or non-admission). If I were him, and I didn't know if I had the grades to get in or not, I would also work other institutions. It would just be a bummer if he does not get in to Stanford and we have to play him wearing a uniform with blue and gold dye.

I would imagine he hears it at the start of games, but I doubt it seems so clever to a high school player once they realized they have pissed off a D-1 caliber NT and the ball is about to be snapped.

Stephens says that his top factor in his selection is academics and that he wants to pursue a career after football in either sports medicine or engineering.Â
All along, I have been on record saying that Stanford easily could get by with just 1 RB in this class, and now Stanford potentially could land 3 if Stephens and Speights both choose the good guys. Interesting depth chart dynamic, but certainly reasonable when you compare it to the very successful decision to take 10 offensive skill position players (4 TEs, 3 RBs, and 3 WRs) in 2009.Â

Bisharat was being recruited by some schools as an LB, so maybe if we somehow got all three one of them could change positions (not sure if Stephens or Speights have played other positions, but certainly possible).

I was not aware of the Blue Grey Football bowl until I saw that Bo Peek got an invitation. Are there other bowls besides Army, Under Armour, Semper Fi, and Blue Grey Football? Also, what is the current pecking order? Thanks for your input.

I think it's out of hand. All these camps, all star games, unofficial visits, he'll, even a HS Voldemort. Without breaking the rules, what do disadvantaged kids do? Who pays to get them to these places? "Uncles?" If I remember correctly, players like H. Walker, Bo Jackson, even OJ, came from families with very few resources. Would they just be SOL today? I realize this is one reason some kids show up ready to play D1 ball, but seems decidedly unfair.

Going out on a limb here -- Herschel Walker, Bo Jackson, and O.J. Simpson would get scholarships today. In fact, I'm guessing that Walker could actually get a scholarship today if he had any eligibility remaining.

Stephens has solid ratings and (seemingly) a great offer list: Texas, Alabama, Ohio State, Wisconsin.
EDIT: Stanford also enters the top 10 on 247 composite rankings.

Love beating out UT for an in-state recruit... again - I could really get used to this. Also from his video, his balance and vision are very impressive - OTOH, not so sure how much I like all those Wildcat plays :P

I think Hank's point was that some kids are so obviously talented that they don't have to do the camp circuits to get offers, and those three would fall in that category.

He's right, too. But there are so many others a bit below that level. I read all the time how much we and other schools want players to camp with them, as underclassmen.

Beating UT for a recruit has been a rare occurrence for anybody, including Stanford. What a great class this is shaping up to be. I would think our ranking will eventually drop as we fill out the class with less-heralded players, but if the current commits all get in and stick I would place this class in the same stratosphere as the 2012 class (partly because of balance and key positions). There's a long way to go to signing day, but very encouraging so far.
