Who are the five? Hint: They were the #8, #10, #18, #31, and #44 head coaches in terms of career winning percentage.

I'm assuming these coaches weren't inducted into the Hall as players?

If so, here are my likely wrong guesses:

Bill Walsh
Vince Lombardi
Hank Stram (sue me, I'm a Chiefs fan)
Tom Landry
Chuck Noll

Tom Landry, Chuck Noll, and Don Shula were first ballot. George Halas and Curly Lambeau were in the inaugural class.

Neither Vince Lombardi nor Bill Walsh were first ballot, so I don't think anyone needs to get their panties in a bunch about Belichick. He'll get in.

Stanford - Jim Plunkett/John Elway, Reese Witherspoon
Cal - Aaron Rodgers, Gregory Peck
UCLA - Troy Aikman, Helen Hunt/Nicolas Cage

Two to go - one from the Midwest, one from the South.

Urghhh. South: Georgia, Miami. Midwest: Oklahoma, U of Wisconsin. NO clue on Best actors/actresses from any of these schools

Palm Tree hit the Midwest school. Wisconsin is correct - Russell Wilson and Fredric March

One to go (from the South).

Clue 1 - The Best Actress is Faye Dunaway.

Florida State.  The QB was Brad Johnson.

John Madden had to wait decades before he got in, and he has the highest winning percentage of any coach to coach at least 100 games. Had to wait until 2006

That’s it!

And, we will add one more after this year’s Super Bowl:

USC - Sam Darnold and John Wayne/Forest Whitaker or
North Carolina - Drake Maye and Louise Fletcher

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 01-31-2026

If the Patriots win the Super Bowl next Sunday, Mike Vrabel will become the fifth person to win a Super Bowl as both a player and a head coach. Who were the other four?  Also, what  would be unique about Vrabel’s accomplishment?

Mike Ditka

Ditka is one.  Three to go.

Tony Dungy
Tom Flores?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 01-31-2026

Both Dungy And Flores are correct.  That leaves 1.

Ditka: As player: Super Bowl VI (Cowboys tight end)

As coach: Super Bowl XX (Bears head coach)

Dungy: As player: Super Bowl XIII (Steelers DB)

As coach: Super Bowl XLI (Colts Head Coach)

Flores: As player: Super Bowl IV (Chiefs quarterback)

As coach: Super Bowls XV, XVIII (Raiders head coach)

Doing both (winning as a player and then as a head coach) with the same team.

Yup, if he wins next Sunday, he will be the first person to win the Super Bowl as both a player and a coach with the same team.

We are missing one more player/coach Super Bowl winner.

Was it Tom Flores?

Yes Flores, but Skip beat you to it.  Still missing one.

Just a wild guess: Tomlin?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BobK - 02-02-2026

I know he won as a coach but as a player?. Kubiak Sr
Son just named the Raider coach

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 - BostonCard - 02-02-2026

Nope, neither Tomlinson nor Kubiak. Kubiak made it to three superbowls as a John Elway’s backup, but the broncos lost all three Super Bowls. Ironically, the coach for those three Broncos teams, Dan Reeves, had won Super Bowl VI as a running back for the Cowboys, but never won it as a coach.

The person in question was a backup QB when he won as a player and won as a coach fairly recently.
