What MLB short career pitcher taught Ed Walsh the spitball? Walsh was probably the foremost spitter pitcher in early 20th Century baseball and a HOF member.

Johnny Allen (142-75) with Yanks, & Indians.

My favorite was a one-year wonder named Bill James, who grew up in Iowa City, a California gold camp (he went to St. Mary's, briefly).  At the age of 22, he went 26-7, threw 30 complete games and was a key component of the 1914 "Miracle Braves" WS champs. Those Braves hadn't had a winning season between 1902 and 1913 and hadn't finished within 50 games of 1st place.

James had an injury from overuse, most likely a rotator cuff injury.  He was done at age 24.  He played in the PCL for a few years.

This HOF pitcher was teammates with more future HOFers (36) than any player currently in the HOF.

This team posted a regular season road record of 29-52 and won the World Series. Their road record is the worst ever for a WS winner.

His 37 HRs in 1987 are the most ever by a player who also stole 50 bases in the same season.

After guessing Grimes (the only other NL possible was Alexander and he never pitched in the AL) I went in and the 36.

Pittsburg: Waner, Waner, Traynor, Vaughn, Hoyt, Wagner, Carey, Kelley.
Yanks: Ruth, Gehrig, Combs, Lazzeri, Dickey, Gomez, Ruffing.
Brooklyn: Wheat, Marquard.
Giants: Terry, Hornsby, Jackson, Roush, Ott, Lindstrom.
Cards: Frisch, Bottomley, Frisch, Hafey, Haines, Dean, Medwick, Vance.
Cubs: Hartnett, Herman, Cuyler,

The ‘87 Twins had a veryhuge home advantage playing at the Humphrey Dome.  I guess that influenced how difficult it was for them to play on the road.

I guessed that it was one of those teams because I knew that in both the 1987 and 1991 World Series the Twins won their four home games and lost the three road games.

Don't know that but during a Real Sports interview in the Q yard Gumbal spoke with a 6'10" pitcher from St. Johns who was #1 on a staff that included Frank Viola and John Franco. He casually answered the question of why he was in with, "Killed my wife."
