Does it seem to anyone else that this is shaping up as one of those classes where the recruits are particularly close with each other, and are acting as really effective recruiters? Often in the past I've heard of one or maybe two guys who are really involved in pulling in a great class (think Skov, the year he entered). I'm sure recruits communicate on social media all the time now, but it just seems like there is not just one leader, like Costello, pulling people in. Costello is a presence,(noticed that Dylan Crawford posted a pic from the football stadium at Stanford the other day) obviously, but also Herbig and Yarbrough on the OL, Curtis Robinson talked about making an extra trip up to Stanford to talk to targeted recruits, including David Long before Long committed. When recruits come on board, they often mention how they've been talking with other members of the class. In previous years, I recall reading comments like: "well, I tell guys why I chose Stanford, but tell them they really have to make the decision that is best for them." My impression this year is we have a lot of people selling Stanford. It's impressive, and if true, could partly explain why this class is coming together so well.Â
Maybe in part this is due to the fact that we are recruiting very well this year with the SoCal elite athletes (Costello, Robinson, Long, and still in the running for Crawford) who know and play against one another, and who attend all the same camps.Â

Definitely seems that way. Twitter and other online communication is having a big impact. Given perfect information, a lot more kids would choose Stanford, so any improvement in the sharing of information helps.Â

A new name for us all to keep an eye on: Keaton Bills, DE from Lance Anderson County (Utah). Apparently we recently offered him, and he is planning on taking an official visit.

Tale of two endorsements - Redrum - 08-19-2015
Is it my imagination or is the HS coach more effusive in praising Swann's teammate, Vanderbilt-bound Tidd? Seems that Tidd is the ballplayer with natural athletic gifts and talent. Swann is smart and quick. Maybe grasping at straws, but liked fact Swann was cited as 265 lbs. compared to the 250 lbs cited in the Scout database. Better base starting point before Turley starts subtracting then adding.
I also got a great kick out of the source: the Daily Journal which in the proud nature of all small newspapers proclaims it serves Franklin, Greenwood, Center Grove, Whiteland, New Whiteland, Bargersville, Trafalgar and Edinburgh. The effect was enhanced when a little pop-up appeared letting me know I had three free reads before I would need a subscription to read. Marvelous! Just like the New York Times! I love small newspapers. Long may they wave.

Interestingly, Bills is being recruited as an OT by the Beavers and BYU and on the DL by Wisconsin and Utah - gotta like the versatility

If you google Bills, it appears that he is LDS and plans to serve a mission. (It's in the displayed portion of a Scout article that is under a paywall.) Stanford potentially will get a big group of LDS kids this year with Fehoko, Kaufusi, Bills, and maybe even Dawson. That would be a fast start to the 2018 group. It doesn't really impact the rest of the current 2016 board though, even assuming all these guys have/get legitimate offers.

I take it with a grain of salt when he says he has no favorites and that he doesn't know why people think Stanford and Michigan are on top. He called Stanford his "dream school."
Here's my read of the tea leaves, taking the new statements in the overall context of his recruitment:
Stanford is #1, but he has to pass admissions.
Michigan is #2, but his spot may not be around when his admissions decision comes.
He doesn't really have a Plan C at this point, but he realizes he can't rely on just Plan A and B, so he wants to create the impression that he's wide open.Â

As a young salesperson, I was once reprimanded by a higher-up for badmouthing a competitor to a prospect. Indeed I lost the sale but learned a valuable lesson. I find it interesting that these coaches, for whom selling is an absolutely crucial part of their job, would be making the same mistake.
On the flip side, it's the modus operandi for political campaigns.
