Re: Dangerous Grounds - Hank 91 - 11-18-2015

I thought of this thread back in April when I was in Detroit, of all places. I stumbled on a pretty cool coffee shop in downtown called Roasting Plant. (http://roastingplant.com/) It features beans from around the world, roasted on site, and when you order your coffee, the beans fly over your head in vacuum tubes from the roasting bins to the grinder. I'm not a coffee expert, but my son and I definitely loved the show.

I believe that there is a similar place in Berkeley.  The problem, unfortunately, is that that there is such a thing as "too fresh" when it comes to roasted coffee.  Going straight from the roaster to the grinder is bad for coffee.  Freshly roasted coffee needs some time to off-gas. The roasting process generates carbon dioxide (and other volatile compounds), which takes a while to dissipate, usually between 48 hours and a couple weeks depending on the roast.  For most coffee roasts, I find the sweet spot is about 5 days.  That's almost never an issue for coffee made at home, but can be a bit of a logistics issue for coffee houses, and the micro-"freshly roasted" beans you get from a place like the one you mentioned can actually taste worse

BC, it sounds like you've roasted a bean or two in your day.

At risk of causing several folks on this thread to burst into flames, I have to say that although I like coffee, I've never enjoyed any cup of coffee as much as a pot of loose leaf green tea. (Of course, I did suffer through an awful peach-infused green tea last weekend.) For daily use I've got a bagged green tea that I found at a local Japanese supermarket (Marukai, for the locals), but currently I've been crushing on a loose leaf jade citrus mint from Starbucks. Heavenly.

Okay, back to your coffee now.

Well, according to the preeminent expert on colon health, green tea is bad for you.

So are bananas.  My doc told me today my potassium was low and she wanted me to eat two bananas/day.  I told her I hate bananas.  She told me to just die then.  Sorry if OT :)

I enjoy tea too, especially oolong.  If you like tea, I would highly recommend Song tea and ceramics... Just bring some time to enjoy talking about the tea, and if you are lucky sitting for a tea service.  They sell wonderful loose leaf tea you can take home, and if you like green tea, I think we are a couple months from peak season.

Would that be a Boston tea party?

Before or after coffee?

Re: Dangerous Grounds - martyup - 01-24-2016

Okay, today I had my first bulletproof coffee.  Very interesting.

Re: Dangerous Grounds - BostonCard - 01-24-2016

No, a San Francisco tea party.  I haven't been in Boston since I was still in school, but the handle stuck.

Ok.... I admit I lurk on the cardboard as much for the OT threads as the football talk. I particularly enjoy the thread drift on this board but I have got to draw the line when a 2 yr old thread on coffee drifts to TEA! noooo ;)

I know.  The next thing someone will start talking about is knitting. :(

The energy at a top speed knitting competition is palpable!  True athletes, the competitors exemplify the need to win!  Just listen to that crowd!  And it's not just the pros.  College matches can be just as exciting.  Is our Knitting Team club only? :(

Re: Dangerous Grounds - Extra Point - 01-24-2016

In the spirit of thread drift, I offer this video of the great Oregon blubber blast of 1970. This historic event occurred when government officials determined that it would be a good idea to blow up a rotting whale carcass with a half ton of tnt.

I take a look at this video once a year, after doing my taxes. It doesn't ease the pain of paying taxes, but it does make you consider what might happen if we ever got all the government we're paying for.
