This recent article points to him, Thomas, Schaffer, being stronger on the defensive side. Note the positive mention of Stanford at the end.

Agreed, the conclusion that they dislike Shaw completely ignores a playing time component. I do not want to see any of these young men go to another school to finish their college careers having followed most of them since their days in high school, but they are doing what they feel is best for both their education and chance to see the playing field.
Rheiner is a backup center who hasn't received meaningful snaps and may fall to a third string position this coming season.
Lyons lost plenty of playing time to Harris this year and with very talented redshirt frosh and true sophomores coming into the picture, play time may become more scarce. Matriculating to Michigan with some familiar staff doesn't seem like a bad move for him.
Crower probably sees that he will no longer be the clear #2 this coming season with Burns or Chryst taking the position.
Young sees even less snaps with Wright becoming the preferred powerback and Sanders/McCaffrey becoming the preferred dynamic backs.

As far as Crower is concerned, I would hope the only time he sees the field is if Hogan gets hurt. Burns/Chryst should most certainly get the garbage time reps imo.

Shaw has said as much. He basically said that next year, we would see the next Stanford QB being groomed to take the reins. I assume this means they will get garbage time reps, and also possibly special "package" plays, as Hogan did before he was eased into the starting position.

Getting back to the subject at hand, the DL pool finally looks pretty good in 2016 after some dry years.
Rand, Okonya, and Peek all seem extremely interested in Stanford.

Those 4 could make a very good (and much needed) DL class.
The OL prospects are not as clear to me. Lots of offers out there, but I haven't read that any of the guys with offers have specific interest in Stanford or even that they highly prioritize academics. Since Tucker didn't take a redshirt, it would be nice to get another future LT in the pipeline. Hall and Dreyer seem more suited to RT.
We're in play for Rashan Gary who's the #1 player in the next class. Has the size of a DT and the athleticism of a DE.

Is Gary "willing to do the work to get in" interested or "using the Stanford offer to make me look smart" interested, like Rasheem Green, Iman Marshll, Christian Kirk, etc.? These are the elite prospects with football factory offers who have no intention of doing all the extra work to get into Stanford and put Stanford in their Top 10 just for appearances sake.

Gary's high school coach is now on Harbaugh's staff. Two of his high school teammates (one being Jabril Peppers) are also in Ann Arbor.

I wouldn't lump Green in with Marshall and Kirk. He actually visited and seems like he did put in the work. That is probably why he was so disappointed when he was told to retake the SAT/ACT.
