Re: Jordan Williamson - NYC Poke - 01-05-2012

I'll post this on Orange Power to spread the word, not to be an A-hole.  Believe me, after our experience in Ames we know how fickle the FG Gods can be and I know that many of our fans are praying for this young man.  Thank goodness I was never called upon to do something like this when I was 18.  I would have tripped over the beer bottles on my way to the ball.

Thank you and thank them. That's very thoughtful and appreciated.

Re: Jordan Williamson - Griffins78 - 01-05-2012

I think it is important to point out that OSU's kicker missed a 37 yard field goal against Iowa State which would have won the game and sent OSU into the National Championship game against LSU - which I think they would have won. But he missed it. That was a much bigger miss and loss that had more impact and ramifications than our loss.

This is the same kicker that came back to win the Fiesta Bowl against us with a field goal and is considered the best kicker in the country.

That's how games can go. Nothing is certain. And one can learn and grow and redeem and succeed.

I have a very strong feeling that this loss will have a net positive effect on our team. It will bring them closer. It will make them stronger, more determined, and hungry. They haven't reached where they wanted to be yet - they could see it, they could smell it, they could feel it. But they have more to accomplish and work towards.

Re: Jordan Williamson - Leftcoast - 01-05-2012

Groan!  Yesterday I turned the station from the Bay Areas sports stations to NPR just to get away from the amateur pop psychologists discussing Jordan Williamson's miss.

Only to find ..... THIS program on NPR.  Yup, more psychologists discussing Jordan Williamson's miss.  Interesting points by Dan O'Brian (from the Dan and Dan Decathlon ad campaign.)

Choking Under Pressure

Wed, Jan 4, 2012 -- 10:00 AM

Stanford lost the Fiesta Bowl Monday night after freshman Jordan Williamson missed three field goal attempts. Why do we choke at important moments, and what can we do about it?

Host: Scott Shafer

Guests:

Dan O'Brien, Olympic gold medalist (1996) in decathlon
David Lombardi, former play-by-play broadcaster who helped cover the Fiesta Bowl for Cardinal Channel and KZSU
Sian L. Beilock, professor of psychology at the University of Chicago and author of "Choke: What the Secrets of the Brain Reveal About Getting It Right When You Have To"

And here's a perspective piece from a Stanford sophomore on why he's not mad at Jordan Williamson.  Great read.
