Current Giants record is 6-11, a run rate that gets then to 57-105.
Bailey, hitting .136, Bader hitting .115. Koss at Oliva at .143. JHL had two hits last night, now hitting .207. Devers up to .212, Ramos up to .226By way of comparison, Mike Krukow's career hitting percentage was .193.
GREAT 2B pickup Luis Arraez is at .333, Adames (leading league in doubles with 9) is at .273 as is Chapman. Casey Schmitt, .341; Susac at .583.
It all boils down to a MLB-worst 3.06 runs per game. And Bailey leads MLB catchers in stolen bases allowed with 13. He's only caught two runners, a rate of 13.3% (MLB average is 20.4%)
How soon before Susac starts, or a panicky call up of Bryce Eldridge?

Leave Eldridge in Sacramento until May (at the earliest) He has no position to play right now with SF since Devers is at 1B, Arraez at 2B and Schmitt at DH.
At best, Susac should be platooning with Bailey. We still don’t know if Susac can hit consistently over a longer timespan or if he is a flash in the pan (see Matos/Fitzgerald).
The big problem right now is the lack of production from the OF’s. Quite frankly, I cannot remember a worse season start by Giants’ outfielders.
In The Athletic, Baggerly made some cogent points in his mailbag this morning. Add to those Brisbee’s observations yesterday, I think we have a pretty good idea why things are going so poorly at this time.

Last year, the Giants did quite well, 4th best. Why so bad right now? (1) the whole team is in a slump. (2) Team's approach to making contact, and the Giants might be making too much contact. They are 20th in strikeout percentage now, which is good, but that also means you're hitting balls outside the strike zone -- not good. Giants are 12th in MLB in swinging at pitches outside of the strike zone. Between 2021 and 2025, they ranked between 21st and 29th. Solution? Only swing at balls in the strike zone.
13. Not only do the Giants score the fewest runs per game in MLB, they are scoring the second-fewest runs in their 138 year history (3.06), only behind 1902 (2.87). Next worst was 1985 (3.43) and 1956 (3.51).

Thanks, Giants. 2nd fewest runs in history, whew!! That sounds more like something systemic than a bunch of guys cold at the season's start. Strikeouts too often involve swinging at balls on the third strike. Any other thoughts?

Giants, White Sox and Rockies have the worst winning % in the majors. All three are 6-12 (.333).
Susac, Schmitt, Adames and Arraez are all doing very well. Chapman is okay. All the other hitters are between sub-par and horrible. the pitching the Giants have faced so far are at the median or slightly worse...average ERA of pitchers facing the Giants is 4.10 (versus 3.90 mean) and average FIP of pitchers facing the Giants is 3.48 (against 3.56 mean). So they're doing badly against average pitching.
Gage, Killian, Tidwell and Brubaker are pitching well. Among the starters, Robbie Ray and Landen Roupp are doing well, Keaton Winn is okay (3.68 ERA). All the other pitchers are having a rough go of it.
The Giants are ranked 20th in fielding, using Outs Above Average as the metric. Using Rtot as the metric, the Giants are 11th. They are league average in fielding percentage and errors.
Here's where the Giants rank on a position by position basis using WAR as the metric:
3rd base, 7th
2nd base, 12th
Shortstop, 12th
Relief Pitching, 16th
Right field, 22nd
Catcher, 23rd
1st base, 25th
Center field, 27th

I think if the Giants are going to win (m)any more games this season, they'll look like today's game:
- Great start by Landen Roupp, had a no-hitter going into the sixth
- Great relief by Walker and Winn (who earned holds) and Erik Miller, who got the save.
- One hitter gets hot (JHL had three hits today)
- Timely hits occur (three two-out hits), 2 for 4 with RISP
- Bailey overturned a ball into a strike.
At the end of the game, SFG's Miller struck out Stewart with a 98 mph 4 seamer for the last out. They started barking at each other, benches cleared. Earlier, Cincy pitcher Phillips hit Adames with a pitch that was about four feet inside and Phillips got kicked out.

I saw the clip of that last K. Miller was pumped. Whenever the benches clear for a tussle, I can't help but smile when the bullpens finally arrive from the outfield. :)

Didn't need Miller yesterday. Three HRs, every starter got a hit, 10-5 blowout; Chapman, Susac, Arraez, Adames and Schmitt had multiple hits. I believe Washington has the worst team ERA in MLB by at least a full run and it showed. The fact that they left former Giant Littell in to accumulate eight earned runs shows how little pitching they have.
Maybe now SFG (8-12) starts a slow climb upwards. They have the 23rd worst record. Houser pitches today, he gave up four runs in each of his last two starts...but Cavalli gave up 4 runs in 1 1/3rd his last start. Hopefully today's a good day.

162 game schedules seem to be built for slow climbs. When they were 6-12 I was thinking, oh no prob, they just need to go 4 and 3 for awhile -- until I realized "awhile" was basically 6 weeks to get to .500. That would be a nice Memorial Day target, but the Giant fan in me remembers the infamous annual June swoons. And all the while the hated Dodgers will be somewhere around .700, sheesh. At least there's usually a chance to get in the playoffs come September.

Houser gave up four earned runs in 5 2/3rds. I think he's the Barry Zito on this team. At least they won in 11, 7-6. Ramos continues to break out of his slump, had three hits with an HR, second in two days. Gilbert, Lee, Schmitt, Chapman and Arraez had two hits.
Erik Miller and Gage got holds, Walker got a well-deserved blown save giving up five baserunners in two innings and thankfully just one run, Caleb Kilian got the win.

As with Zito, I'd say there's a 1 in 7 chance he finishes 15-8 and a 6 in 7 chance he finishes sub-.500... ;)

Pretty sweet. Giants won two straight over the Dodgers, giving up just one run in the two games. Mahle dropped his ERA from 7.32 to 5.26. It was the Dodgers first time getting shut out this season. Kilian pitched a good hold, Walker earned the save. Devers and Ramos both had two hits. JHL wasn't badly hurt from yesterday. First Giants series victory over the Dodgers in nearly two years.
They play tomorrow at 12:45 at Oracle. Tyler Glasnow vs. Logan Webb.

Giants beat Marlins today, 6-3. Stanford's Erik Miller earned the save allowing no baserunners over the last 1 1/3rd innings, reducing his ERA to 3.48. Landon Roupp won his fifth game, and is tied for the MLB lead in wins.
Giants have now won three series in a row.
Giants hitters are starting to turn it around. Jung Hoo Lee (.313) went 4 for 5 today, Arraez (.314), Schmitt (.296) had the winning three-run HR, Chapman's up to .283, Ramos and Gilbert are both at .265. They still have the fewest HRs in the majors (tied with Red Sox and Brewers). and OPS is at .667, #28 in MLB. Slightly balanced out with the 10th most doubles in MLB and third most triples. At least Giants hitters have the fourth fewest strikeouts in MLB, so there's that. They have the fewest stolen bases in the majors with eight. Brewers have the most with 36.

Chapman is second in MLB for 3B WAR with 0.8. Arraez is #6 at 2B with 0.5. Jung Hoo Lee is #8 in RF at 0.3. Giants relief pitching is #7 with 0.6 WAR.
Arraez currently leads the NL with 89 assists, 20 double plays, and a 1.000 fielding percentage. Surprisingly, Arraez leads the NL in range factor. League average is 4.20, Arraez's 9 inning range factor is 4.80. He also leads the NL in Rtot for 2nd basemen with +4. And he's slashing .314/.345/.371/.717, seventh in the NL in hits. Jung Hoo Lee and Chapman are #11 and #12 in the NL in hits.
