RE: NCAA Women's Golf - oldalum - 05-22-2018

Az is clinging to one-hole leads in 2 matches, but needs Pagdanganan to turn her match around from 1 down.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - BobK - 05-22-2018

Lee up 2 after 14.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - M T - 05-22-2018

Arizona & UCLA are essentially tied.  UCLA won 1 match & leads in one.  Arizona leads in 2.  The other is all square.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-22-2018

Lee drains a 15-18 foot birdie putt from off the green for a 3 up lead with 3 to play!

In the other half of the bracket, UCLA and Arizona are tied 2-2 with the final match all square between Tavatanakit and Pagdanganan with 3 to play.

Btw, Lee is 4 under so far in her match today.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - bl82 - 05-22-2018

What a putt by Lee from off the Green on 15/6 to go up by 3

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - BostonCard - 05-22-2018

Nail biting time.  Up one hole with one hole left.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-22-2018

Mao birdies 7 and 8. Lee is still 1 up going to the 9th hole (the 18th of the match).

Stanford fans may remember that Mariah Stackhouse was 2 down with 2 to play vs. Baylor in the 2015 championship match and went birdie-birdie to take the match to extra holes where she won on the 19th.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - oldalum - 05-22-2018

Arizona has a good chance to pull off the upset, with its best player AS going to 18

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - BostonCard - 05-22-2018

UCLA/Arizona is all square on the final hole, which means that functionally they are already in a sudden death.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-22-2018

Mao comes up just short on her birdie putt on 18. Lee 2 putts for par and a halve to win the hole. Stanford wins 3-2!

The opponent is Arizona! Arizona upsets UCLA 1 up on the final match.

Afternoon semifinal matches will start at 2:20 pm local time/12:20 pm pacific.

Everyone over to the tennis match now where Stanford trails after losing the doubles point.

It's the Pac-12 plus Alabama, with at least one Pac-12 team (winner of Stanford/Arizona) in the final.  Alabama looks tough, but I don't know that I can bring myself to root for USC.

Wow the northwestern player was awesome the last three holes.  Congrats to Stanford.  On to the semis

And thanks to the posters keeping us so current

Even though she was playing against Stanford, I was really hard *not* to root for Janet Mao, the Northwestern player who was so hot down the stretch.  A neuroscience major who presumably had Stanfordesque credentials coming out of HS, we certainly wish her well going forward.  Great match!

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - 2006alum - 05-22-2018

All right now! Great of Lee not to get rattled by Mao's 5-hole plan and stay composed on that last hole. Spiny and Hulk, apart from eliminating a possible UCLA national champion, are we glad to be facing Arizona instead? Seems like they've been one of the hottest teams on the course apart form their near collapse yesterday?

Is anyone else finding this to be the least productive work week ever so far? Between the golf and tennis live updates, I'm finding myself with about 10 minutes of uninterrupted work time before I feel compelled to check the board again. What a great problem to have. 8)

Retirement is awesome.  Lol.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-22-2018

Arizona is a tough match up for Stanford. In fact, any opponent is tough for Stanford. Unless Liu and Wang can raise their games above where they have played this week, the only path to a victory is for Aubert, Valenzuela and Lee all to win.  A tall order.

Going by national rankings, Moore is Arizona's highest rated player at 28th nationally. Hou is 37th and Pagdanganan is 42nd.  Stoll is 109th and Nordaas is not ranked.

But don't assume that a lower ranking indicates a weaker player. Arizona beat UCLA because Stoll went out in the first match and knocked off the #2 player in the country, Lilia Vu. All of these players have been champions in junior golf. They all know how to win.

And don't forget that Arizona was comfortably in 3rd place before their near-epic collapse in yesterday's 4th round. They are a formidable opponent. But it's the national semifinal - what else do you expect? :-)

Semifinal matchups are set. Both coaches going with the same order as this morning.

1 - Stoll vs. Wang
2 - Hou vs. Aubert
3 - Moore vs. Liu
4 - Nordaas vs. Valenzuela
5 - Pagdangan vs. Lee

First tee time is 2:20 central. Score tracker is here - http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=match&tid=15141&rid=2

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Hulk01 - 05-22-2018

Much, much, much prefer #10 Arizona to #0.5 UCLA.   As badly as we are playing at the bottom of our order, Arizona's #5 has played even worse.  And their #1 player, Hayley Moore, shot 78-76-72-77 in stroke play.

Based on the scores in this tournament, we could play them straight up, best scorer to worst in order on each team, and win 4-1.

If just one of Liu/Wang can play to form--Wang was the best player on the team for the last month of the season--this could be an better match for us than today's.  Maybe Liu can finally shake the flu.

A chance tomorrow to see a record that could stand for decades: Shannon Aubert's tenth match in an NCAA finals. After Cardinal Casey Danielson's eight, the next most matches by a womens' college player may be three.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - 2006alum - 05-22-2018

Great! As much as I hate rooting for the Toejams, unless I'm missing something, wouldn't Bama be a really really hard matchplay win for us? Three of their players finished in the top 7 and their four and five players both finished better than ours. $C seems more evenly spread and more plausible we could get three wins from their top four players. Is it worth making the rare exception to root for the Spoiled Children?

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - oldalum - 05-22-2018

I think so, because it would make their subsequent defeat even more crushing for them!

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-22-2018

Hulk, I definitely would rather that Stanford play Arizona than UCLA too. But I still expect a tough match.

Alabama women's golf is like Alabama football. They are #1 and loaded with All Americans. U.SC is well, U.SC. They had two of their top players leave after the fall semester to go pro. The coach saw this coming and convinced two commits to do the work to graduate from high school early and enroll at U.SC in January. They are playing 4 frosh and a sophomore.  So U.SC golf is kind of like U.SC football too.
