I like our chances now! According to Twitter handle @wareagleextra, RJ found out on Friday that he was admitted to Stanford, and the schools are 50-50. This would be such a big get for the Cardinal in every way imaginable.

Agreed. If he both received his admission to Stanford and canceled his visit to Alabama, I frankly will be surprised if he doesn't choose Stanford at this point

It sounds like Alabama class is getting full and they don't have a spot for him. This is a tough one to call. Saying the Stanford admission is making his decision very difficult makes it sound like he was set on Auburn. I want this guy but not necessarily as much as I want Weddington and Warner. I feel like getting all 3 would be greedy.

Wut?
DL is the most difficult position for Stanford to recruit. Any time Stanford can land a DL coveted by Alabama and Auburn, that is a guy any Stanford fan should want badly. As for being greedy, the class is quite small. The margin for error is non-existent. Moreover, I don't see any program Stanford competes against having pangs of guilt for recruiting too many elite prospects.

We signed 4 DL last year and have 1 committed this year. We signed 1 LB last year and have 0 committed thus far this year that are not going on a two year mission. We play 4 LBs on every play and 2-3 DL on every play. I think our need for LBs is much greater than our need for DL. Thus, if I had a choice due to positional need, I will take the LB being recruited by Georgia over the DE being recruited by Auburn (Alabama offer is not on the table any longer) even though they have comparable overall recruiting rankings, but I would love to have both of them. We need them both.

Firmly in the area of "reading tea leaves" but Ryan Johnson's Twitter feed seems to have a lot of retweets regarding Stanford guys: Dumuni and Wedington at the Polynesian Bowl, but also others committing to Stanford.
Count me as being optimistic.

The latest on Johnson. Sounds like we have a good shot. I like the part about how if he were hurt he would want to be a regular student.

A new possibility. Whether we get him or not, you got to love the way we strike fear into the hearts of the ND faithful on the recruiting trail these days.

Don't be silly. Alabama classes are never full -- they can always greyshirt someone, push an "injured" player (i.e., marginal contributor) onto a medical scholarship, etc. If Johnson wants to go there, Alabama would quickly find space for him.

Stanford will have these 14 scholarship LBs in 2017
OLB: Kalambayi, Alfieri, Toohill, Tyler, Robinson, Veach, Reid, Dumani
ILB: Palma, Barton, Okereke, Branch, Perez, Fox
If Warner commits to be an ILB, Stanford will have 15 scholarship LBs. And I'm not completely ruling out the possibility that Lund could be an ILB, particularly if Warner goes elsewhere.
Though you could maybe argue Warner is 1A and Johnson 1B, I don't think either is appreciably less valuable than the other. That said, elite DL are more valuable than elite LBs. I don't know if Johnson will be elite, but feel pretty confident saying he will be a much better player than say Wesley Annan. So if you have Johnson, that will make it more likely Stanford will have better DL on the field more frequently.
And to me, the importance of getting a DL from Alabama, that everyone thought would go to either Alabama or Auburn, would be a watershed accomplishment for Stanford football.
So in other words, in recruiting, you want them all. :P

Dumani will go on a mission. Replace him in the list with Gabe Reid who is returning from a mission.

My take on Johnson: it's really difficult to say no to an SEC school like Auburn when you are born and raised in the neighborhood. I think he chooses Stanford, but needs to show that he is seriously considering Auburn, give it props for being a great school, but eventually say that the lifetime decision was too much to pass up at Stanford. We've reached a point in Stanford recruiting that most of the fans of other institutions will accept that decision (recall the comments of Walker Little's parents about the respect for the Stanford education on other teams' discussion boards), but it helps to play up how difficult the decision was. But, if you pushed yourself through the application process and gained an acceptance, I think the odds are pretty high you will come to Stanford.
Regarding Fields: he did tweet that he had a Stanford offer. But I wonder: was that the coaches saying, hey, it's not too late if you want to rush through an application, to take a shot. Though he scheduled his announcement and we are not on his list of final schools.

Further gloss on Damuni's ranking: Rivals rates him as a 4-star, and 247 gives him a score of 89 (a 90 would get him a fourth star). So while the majority of services have him as a 3-star, he's at the tippy top of the 3-star range.Â
