Officially an insider post, but it looks like most of the stuff is above the fold, so to speak.

I wonder if he plays WR or DB for us.  On the one hand, we seem to have a  better pipeline at DB; on the other, most people are more excited about him as a defensive back.  This is the sort of problem that I like having.

We initially offered Long as a WR; a minority of teams did as well. (LSU, to take one example.) But Long's preference appears to be at DB. I suppose it's possible we could try using him two ways.

While we initially offered Long as a WR, in one of his post-commitment interviews he mentioned breaking down film with Akina, which seems to indicate that he is now coming in as a DB.  Of course, things can change, and the great thing for Stanford is that he can help in so many areas.

We're currently recruiting him as a CB, but our WR board this year is barer than we'd like, so any of the DB commits who don't crack the depth chart after a year may be looked at on offense.

Could be wishful thinking but I'm wondering if with social media and camps all over the country, some of these guys are doing like LeBron and Bosh did with the Heat and are committing to schools together.  Like "hey man, let's all go to Stanford."

Haven't seen anyone mention Caleb Kelly in their possibilities for the 2016 class.  Does this mean there is real reason to write him off?  Like did he not sign up for two AP classes in his Senior year or something?

Some of the stanford commits are still recruiting kelly so the chance is probably non-zero. Plus he took the time to visit the campus, which is a good sign. I just don't get the impression that Stanford is in his top group of schools or that college academics are a real priority for him. A lot of people are picking Oklahoma, which would be really rare for a California kid who ends up at Stanford.

Since Kelly and Burton don't appear to be taking Stanford OVs, both have visited unofficially, and both have expressed interest in Stanford, it makes me wonder:  Has anyone signed with Stanford who didn't take an OV to Stanford?

I have no premium subscriptions, so really no insider information at all, but I do recall Kelly talking about Stanford being in his top 10 or top 7.  But I also wonder, sometimes, if recruits do so because mom or dad (often mom) is really taken with The Farm, and they add us to the list to satisfy the parent. Maybe the interest is real.  Or maybe, as the class takes shape, the interest becomes real.  Kelly and/or Burton would be a fantastic addition to a class that is already shaping up to be one of the most talented group of non-linemen/jumbo athletes that Stanford has had in recent memory.

Regarding whether or not we've ever had someone commit who did not officially visit: I'm not sure, but my impression is a fairly high number commit before taking an OV, and use their Official to come to the big recruiting gathering in January, where all the commits, and a few guys on the fence, gather.  So even if Burton and Kelly don't have OV's scheduled to Stanford at the moment, they could always change their plans if their interest is serious and they end up committing.

It would make sense for a local player to take his five official visits elsewhere if he were considering five teams other than Stanford.

Chryst did visit officially on January 10th, 2014 along with just about everyone else on the "Big Visit" for that year.  Although he had committed months before (June 2013), why not take advantage of some free meals, some chances to bond with your future teammates and, probably most importantly, a chance to lobby potential future teammates who had not yet pulled the trigger.

According to Scout, Anderson visited January 14, 2011in that year's Big Visit.  Anderson had committed almost a year earlier (March of 2010)!  It was probably a similar scenario as Chryst, where he took his official visit because, why not, and in order to recruit potential teammates and bon with those that had already committed.

My point was more for the local recruit who was still deciding, and had Stanford plus at least five other schools they were considering.  A local who had already committed to Stanford, or had fewer than five other potential schools presumably would take advantage of the official visit (and likely is encouraged by the coaches to do so).

Funny, when I searched for Jovan, I found him posing with Laron Landry, a relative infamous photo showing what a body building nut Landry is, which never seemed to help him tackle on the field.

But Jovan is a mountain of a man-child. When did 17 year old kids get to be so freakin' brobdingnagian?
