Another pro volleyball league starting next year in the states:

"LOVB’s inaugural pro season will launch in pre-season following the Paris Olympics in 2024, and will last from November 2024 through April 2025. It will feature six teams in six cities, including Atlanta, Houston, Madison and Salt Lake."
I don't see how the people behind these leagues think they will work financially. They'll have to rely on live streaming revenue because gate receipts won't cover a fraction of their expenses.

Let me don my economist hat for a few minutes. Entrepreneurs are, almost by definition, optimists. If you want to start a new business, you can spend months (and millions of $) doing research. Pretty sure your chances of success are no better than someone who simply takes the plunge. Will these leagues survive? Like you, I am skeptical. But, having been involved in several startups over the years, I can assure you that none of us can accurately answer that question.

I attended quite a few San Jose Golddiggers games in the late 1980s before their league folded. The San Jose team's games were well attended but other cities struggled including the two time league champion in LA. Game quality was above the level of Div 1 volleyball, especially when the top two teams played - San Jose and the before mentioned LA Starlites. Olympians Rita Crockett and Debi Green played for LA while San Jose had players like Laurie Corbelli (two time Olympian) and former Stanford stars Nancy Reno and Wendi Rush. Former San Jose star Lisa Ice also played for San Jose for at least one year.
I have vivid memories of an obviously pregnant Crockett diving for loose balls at the San Jose Civic Auditorium. Might have been the 1987 championship game.
It was a fun league but ultimately financially unviable. Supposedly the LA team drew only 3,000 for it's 11 home games in 1988. San Jose drew much better although I can't find the numbers.
When I see the success of college women's volleyball with Nebraska selling out their football stadium to watch women's volleyball (admittedly a stunt but still ...) I wonder if times have changed. Probably not but I can see how some might think it's worth a try.

I certainly enjoyed the San Jose Golddiggers. When the league ("Major League Volleyball") folded, their final event was an all-star match in San Jose. I was there. I believe the Minnesota franchise also pulled good numbers; but LA and NYC did not.

After splitting the first two sets, Texas thrashed Wisconsin 25-13 and 25-16 in the last two sets.

Texas swept Nebraska in the national championship.
The Longhorns peaked at the end of the season, and looked unstoppable in their last two matches.
(Despite Jerritt Elliott getting a red card and giving Nebraska a free point late in the first set.)

I like Elliott. He's an old school guy. I believe he was sure the Nebraska team was out of rotation or he wouldn't have been so adamant about it. His mistake was using the F word on national TV where the viewers could visually make out what he said.
This match reaffirms to me the importance of really tough serving. It's a weapon that can overcome the superior overall skills of an opponent. Hambly has been right all along about serving tough. The one caveat IMO is Stanford has decent servers; not really good, consistent servers.
I'm sure someone will respond to my comment about servers that Stanford won a bunch of matches, won a conference championship, and was a #1 regional seed. That's all true. I'm just looking at how can Stanford get better in the future. Maybe even search out and recruit a lights-out server as a serving sub?

Losing 24-, 14-, 11- is something else
From being what I perceived to be a relatively underperforming program among the elites
prior to 2022, Texas suddenly does a back-to-back in 2022 and 2023 to increase their total
championship count to 4, just one less than Nebraska.
Stanford is still the all-time leader in:
Final Four Appearances:
24 (vs. 2nd place Nebraska's 16)
Total National Champion Finishes:
9 (vs. 2nd place Penn State's 7)
Total National Runner-up Finishes:
8 (vs. 2nd place Nebraska's 6)
On the other hand, Stanford current Final Four drought
extends to 4 seasons, tying the 2nd most from 1988-1991
and just one less than the longest from 2009-2013.

I was very surprised my the championship match and how Nebraska gave up midway thru Set 2. I know they hadn't faced adversity in a match all year, but to give up and get truly slaughtered was unexpected from a #1 overall seed. See if what effect it has on the freshman going into next season. I don't know what Cook could say to them in the dressing room after that match.
Love that Labor Day weekend event in Milwaukee next year. Hope they get a TV deal for it so we all can watch.

Here’s a suggestion. About a century ago I was a middling tennis player. One important thing I learned was about serving. It’s easier to hit a ball that is not moving. Toss a ball up for a serve, when is it stationary? At its peak. Hence focus on tossing the ball to the spot where you want to hit it. Volleyball servers and setters should practice their toss.

That's interesting Joe about the length of time between FFs for Stanford. I doubt Stanford makes it to the FF in 2024 based on what we lost this year. And in 2025 we will have lost Miner, Oglivie, and Francis so unlikely a FF appearance. Hambly may be presiding over a record setting drought of getting to the FF. Admittedly impossible to predict the future as volleyball is often about what team gets hot in the NCAA tournament.
There are good pieces of information posted on this thread for WVB fans. I sometimes take note of the page number for future reference. That's why I prefer to keep this thread going. I don't see the reason for starting a new Stanford WVB thread.

Caroline Jurevicius, OPP, Nebraska is in the transfer portal. She redshirted this past year as a freshman so has four years of eligibility. She was highly recruited as a prep player including Stanford. She went to Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin High School in Ohio which in the world of WVB is a Stanford type of recruiting source.
Her transfer portal profile indicates "do not contact" which means she already has a deal done. Any chance it's Stanford? Hambly plans to turn Harvey into a OPP but getting an elite OPP who has played the position since the beginning would be a better option.
