Two schools have ignominious AP College Football streaks.
1. The last time they were ranked was 1960. This is currently the longest string of non-appearances by a school that was ranked at least once.
2. They have never been ranked and now have played Division 1 (known today as FBS) football longer than any school without receiving recognition at least once.
Who are they?

Correct. Gustafson was drafted in the 27th round by the 49ers, but did not play in the NFL. He played a year in the Canadian Football League, then joined the Army. The
American army.
Don Sanders graduated a year before Gustafson, drafted in the 28th round by the 49ers. I've seen him listed separately as a quarterback and a defensive back. He became a city planner and realtor in Modesto.
Steve Stenstrom played for the 49ers in 1999, his last year in the NFL. He went 54/100, with 0 TDs and 4 INTs.

I read that North Texas State was last ranked in 1959, then recently entered the AP Top 25 at #22. So that doesn't count.

Yep. That is what prompted my question. N. Texas is off the “longest since their last ranking” spot replaced by the answer to #1.
Bob - No to Harvard. They are not “Division 1 (known today as FBS)”.

Nope. They were ranked as high as #18 during their four week run in the Top 25 in 2012.

Close…
In 1961, Rice was ranked 7th after an opening week win over LSU. However, they fell out of the rankings when they lost to Ga. Tech the following week. They have not been ranked since that one glorious week.

No. The Owls’ last appearance in the poll was 2016. The were ranked for one week (23rd).
Time for some clues.
1. They were a founding member of the Border Conference (1931). They left that group in 1962 to try their hand at independence. That lasted until 1969. Since then, they have been a member of a number of conferences.
2. They were also a founding member of the Border Conference. They left in 1951 to join the late, lamented Skyline Conference.

Urghhh - so thinking one of the big "border" schools and had to pull out my trusty Gulf of America map. Arizona, ASU, Texas Tech, Houston, Baylor & UTEP I think all have been ranked in the late 20th &/or 21st century. Is it Texas San Antonio (are they even FBS?) or one of the two large New Mexico schools?

New Mexico State?
RE: Sports trivia thread 2025 -

Palm Tree and Mick got it…
The answers are:
1. New Mexico State (last appearance 1960)
2. New Mexico (still waiting for their first ranking)
Skip: UTEP was ranked most recently in 2005.

wait, if we are including never ranked schools, then there are a number of other answers:
Delaware and Missouri state made their FBS debut this year so they have technically never been ranked. There are a number of other recent moves to FBs who also haven’t been ranked.

Yep. There are quite a few; however, the question which school has been unranked
longer than any other school. New Mexico’s unranked string goes back to 1931.
