The last Ivy to play in a bowl game was Columbia in the 1934 Rose Bowl after the 1933 season. They played Stanford. Columbia won 7-0. Stanford had only given up four TDs all season.

The Ivies rarely played in bowl games.  Harvard only played in one (1919 Rose Bowl, beating Oregon 7-6). No Ivy has played in more than one bowl game, and only in the Rose Bowl. Washington State defeated Brown in the second-ever Rose Bowl, 14-0. Oregon defeated Penn, 14-0 in the third-ever Rose Bowl. Yale, Dartmouth, Princeton and Cornell have never been in a bowl game.

Last night’s grand slam by Yaz produced a cascade of trivia…

Who hit the last walk-off grand slam by a Giant?

Who was the pitcher against whom he hit the grand slam? Clue - an odd tie-in to last night’s opponent.  

Only four have been hit in the franchise’s San Francisco era - who hit them?

Who hit the last walk-off grand slam in the franchise’s New York era?  Clue - a guy who hit a rather notable walk-off HR later the same year. 

And not a question but another oddity- The Boston Red Sox have hit the most walk-off grand slams in baseball history (20).  However, Captain Carl never hit one.  I wonder if Yaz the Younger will make a phone call today…….

Mick... Remember that before the mid Sixties there were few bowl games. Really just the four majors and the Gator Bowl although there were minor games in the Southwest. Princeton even had a Voldemort winner, Dick Kazmeier in 1951.

I do remember that...Bill McColl of Stanford finished fourth in Voldemort voting that year. Babe Parilli was 3rd.  Hugh McIlhenny was 8th and Ollie Matson was 9th.  Parilli and Matson were the 3rd and 4th picks in the 1952 draft, McIlhenny was 9th, Frank Gifford was 10th, Gino Marchetti was 14th.  Kazmeier wasn't drafted until the 15th round, but everyone knew (I think) that Kaz was headed to Harvard Business School. McColl was drafted in the 3rd round.

Also selected were Stanford players Bob Meyers, Dick Horn, Gary Kerkorian, and Harry Hugasian, all taken between the 16th and 21st round.

I've been reading all the skies-are-falling posts (and writing one or two of my own) on the demise -- or consolidation -- of D1 college football.  There's 131 programs, currently, so it seems as if it is alive and well, even if only a few conferences matter.

So here's a few trivia questions on D1 college football:

1) Which state has the most D1 football programs?  The second most?
2) How many states don't have D1 football programs?  Who are they?
3) What is the largest state, by population, to have no D1 football programs?
4) What is the smallest state, by population, to have a D1 football program?
5) Which state has the most population, on average, per D1 football program (think large state, few football factories)

I note this because technically all the FCS schools are in D1.  

1 - Texas, Florida 
2 - N. Dakota, S. Dakota, Vermont, Maine, N. Hampshire, Montana
3 - N. Hampshire 
4 - Vermont
5 - New York

Great guesses, a few were right on.  Here's the final answers:

1) Which state has the most D1 football programs? Texas has the most with 12 (Baylor, Houston, North Texas, Rice, SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas State, Texas Tech, UTEP, UTSA).  The second most? Ohio, with Akron, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Kent State, Miami (OH), Ohio, Ohio State, and Toledo.
2) How many states don't have D1 football programs?  Who are they?  Nine states and the District of Columbia.  The states, in declining order of population are NH, ME, RI, MT, DE, SD, ND, AK and VT.
3) What is the largest state, by population, to have no D1 football programs? The largest is New Hampshire, with a population of 1,388,992.
4) What is the smallest state, by population, to have a team?  Wyoming, with 576,841 population.
5) Which state has the most population, on average, per D1 football program (think large state, few football factories). New York was a good guess, with just three teams. Their average is 6,611,971 per team, which puts them at second.  First is New Jersey at 9,267,130 with just one team, Rutgers. Third is Missouri, with 6,168,187 residents and just one team, Mizzou. #4 to #6 are Wisconsin, Minnesota and California, all between 5.6 mms and 5.9 mms. population per college.

1908 was an amazing year for the New York Giants rotation. They had Christy Mathewson (1.43 ERA), Red Ames (1.81), Hooks Wiltse (2.24), Iron Man Joe McGinnity (2.27), Luther Taylor (2.33), Bill Malarkey (2.57) and Doc Crandall (2.94).  They even had a 21 year old Rube Marquard (only pitched/started one game) and -- no typo -- a pitcher named Bull Durham. Team ERA was 2.14, best the Giants franchise ever saw.

What year was the best year, statistically speaking, for the San Francisco Giants' starting rotation? For the pitching staff overall?
