RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - PVTree - 06-19-2023

We lose a lot of offense this year:
-Park
-Troy
-Graham
-Rios (he should go while his stock is up)
-Bowser
-Cobb (replaceable)

We return regulars:
-Montgomery
-Moore
-Becerra (late starter)

“Home plate umpire Brandon Cooper.” RUFKM? Rings up Montgomery on a checked swing without asking 3b umpire. Replay showed the call was wrong.

Time to start blaming the umpires. I guess that really means we're toast.

The call, and failure to check, was way wrong. But we are toast anyway because Burns is the best pitcher we've seen in this tournament.

We have a history with this guy.

Brandon Cooper's strike zone is one of the world's greatest mysteries.

Rats.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - PVTree - 06-19-2023

I thought we didn't have enough pitching to win it all, and it turned out to be true, but was surprised that our offense sputtered so much.

We didn't have the clutch hit with runners on base as we needed. I'm at peace with going with Mathews as much as we did today. If we were to go down, I wanted to go down with Mathews on the mound.

Yep, as soon as they put him in we couldn't do squat. We are good enough to make the CWS, but we aren't good enough to win once we get there. Oh well.

Gotta agree with that.

The calls were equally bad for both teams in both our games so it was not a disadvantage. What I don't like is that the strike zone was way off from my vantage point.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - Spiny_Norman - 06-19-2023

Including the P12 tournament, Stanford played 13 postseason games. They led in the 5th inning or later in 12 of those games. Yet the record overall was 7-6.

The pitching was good at times. The hitting was good at times. But overall, Stanford just didn't win enough of the key moments when the margin for error was thin as it always is in the postseason.

The runs scored generally inherently goes down as the tourney starts and advances, because a higher percentage of the innings become "high-leverage". So every team is throwing their best arms.

The pitching (specifically the bullpen) is going to have to take massive steps forward for Stanford to once again compete for a national seed and a trip back to Omaha. Three trips to the MCWS in a row should be celebrated and is a great achievement, but it can also be said that there is a lot of room for improvement in the pitching department.

Not sure about that. Will post the video sometime Wednesday. We can all see for ourselves. The real mystery is why Cooper is still umpiring.

Sucks to lose.  But not making the CWS would have sucked more.

Yeah, anytime you make the CWS you have to classify it as a pretty good season.
Just sucks that we are 1-6 in it in the last three years.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - gailtate - 06-19-2023

Stanford went as far as it could this season.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - terry - 06-19-2023

Stanford is a good, but flawed, baseball team. The team ERA of 5.72 ranked 8th in the Pac 11 and 123rd in Div. 1. They give up too many free passes (walks and HBPs). They make too many base-running errors. They are just fair in the field. Stanford did very well to maximize its strengths and to make it to Omaha. They can call this season a success, then they can work on improvement.
