The Mercury News' Dieter Kurtenbach savaged the choice of Buster Posey in this morning's article. Pretty good summary here:

Long story short, Kurtenbach accuses the Giants of having no direction or structure, no overarching philosophy and that Posey is just a feel-good hire without the qualifications or even a plan in place to succeed. Basically, he's cashing in his slack with the fans and ownership. DK says the press conference was empty rhetoric, implied that Posey is not remotely qualified, and that the Giants are taking a step unprecedented in modern baseball. Culminates it by saying hiring Posey is beneath the Giants.
In an article dripping with Snark, Kurtenbach notes that Posey will need to build up the farm system, improve player development plan and optimize the 40 man roster. He says that he'll have to do it with Zaidi's staff, and that this was a pure crony hire. Says Posey wants to be a figurehead, and questioned whether Posey's appointment was about winning.

I’ll stick to Baggerly and Brisbee for analysis re: the Giants.
Both of them wrote measured articles in which they detailed both the positives and potential negatives. In essence, Posey knows that he has much to learn (unlike his predecessor who thought he had all the answers) and has already reached out to a number of highly respected people within the baseball community, including Brian Sabean, Dusty Baker and Nick Hundley to get their advice.
IMO, this was a brilliant play by Johnson to show the fans that he heard them. He had to do something that would reenergize the fanbase.
In the long run, will Posey be successful in the role? None of us know; however, I would never bet against Buster. On (three World Series championships, MVP, future Hall of Famer) and off (the Body Armor investment) the field, he has been incredibly successful. Once he begins to fill out his org. chart, starting with, as Bob noted, a highly qualified #2, we will get a glimpse of what to expect.

I can't recall who wrote this, but it was either a fellow, older writer; an editor or Bayless's first boss who claimed that Bayless specifically selected this persona to maximize his long-term income. Looks like it worked. Probably worked for a variety of similar writers; e.g., Glenn Dickey and Lowell Cohn. Lowell's kid, Grant, is doing his level best to replicate what his father did.

I’m thinking Bochy has a slightly better understanding than Heyman.
And the Jeter comparison doesn’t hold water. Jeter took over a bottom end franchise that is historically incredibly cheap. He had no real ties to that organization.
They are completely different situations.
Law. I stopped listening/reading him a long time ago. Never met a Dodger prospect that he didn’t like. He’s also a big time analytics guy. Half of them are hurt that there’s even the potential that somebody besides a mathematician can potentially run a baseball team.

Suffice to say that, unlike his predecessor, Posey will not dictate to Melvin lineup decisions and in-game moves. He will give Melvin the tools he needs and let Bob make the decisions that are best left to the field manager.
Also, I’m not sure if anyone read about Will Clark’s rant re: Zaidi and his unhealthy attachment to analytics. Clark really went off (his vocabulary skews heavily to a word that we can’t use here).
I’m looking forward to Posey’s balanced approach (old school/new school). Also, his desire to create an environment in which each staff member is permitted to manage their area of responsibility without constantly looking over their shoulder will be a welcome change over the top down approach that was in play for the last six years.
This blast of fresh air has reenergized my enthusiasm for Giants baseball. Only four months until pitchers and catchers report…

Matt Chapman, Patrick Bailey and Mike Yastrzemski have all been nominated for Gold Gloves at their positions. Chapman and Bailey look like favorites at their respective positions, and Yaz has a puncher's chance.
Chapman is first in the NL in total zone runs (15) and double plays (34) for third basemen. Also first in errors, but 5th in fielding percentage. He gets to a lot of balls, 3rd in assists and putouts as well, 2nd in games as 3B. He was first among NL 3Bs with 17 defensive runs saved, 7 more than #2 Ryan McMahon, was tied for first in Outs Above Average and Fielding Run Value.. It would be his fifth GG, first in the NL.
Bailey is the best pitch-framing catcher in the NL. Easily led MLB in Fielding Run Value, tied for 2nd in Defensive Runs Saved. According to FanGraphs, he was the most impactful defensive player in all of baseball. He's 2nd in assists, double plays and caught stealing, 3rd in fielding %, 4th in caught stealing percentage and total zone runs, 5th in putouts. And, like Chapman, first in errors at his position, also 2nd in passed balls.
Yaz is a finalist for the second time, but has a chance. Longtime winners Mookie Betts played mostly infield, and 2023 winner Fernando Tatis had a lot of injuries. Yaz had the 2nd most games in RF, 4th most putouts, 4th most assists and 3rd best fielding percentage as an RF. 4th most errors as an RF, too. He also had the third most triples in the NL. Not bad for a 33 year old. Frelick has the best metrics, and is probably the favorite.

All three names correct, year was 2016, which was the year that Panik and Posey won their sole gold gloves. Crawford won four through his career.

Nice guys! I was thinking through some of the early 2000s teams so clearly way offbase (I'd forgotten Panik's gold glove). Further back, did any of the Robbie Thompson teams get three gold gloves?

I needed a break so googled a bit to answer my own question and yes, the Giants did earn three Gold Gloves in 1994 - Robbie Thompson (2B), Matt Williams (3B), and Barry Bonds (OF). It looks like this was the only other year the Giants accomplished this feat although there are several more years with two gold gloves.
