The last time we won a World Series was never. We’ve been to the World Series twice (only once since I first moved to San Diego). In my life as a fan, we’ve been to the playoffs a grand total of five times.
Sure, the current management is spending like a drunken sailor, and I’m excited to see what Soto and Tatis do together for the next 1+ years (if Tatis gets back from the DL). But also, if we don’t win, we are looking at a long winter, with a decimated farm system and perennial concern that ownership will change its mind and sell all the pieces.
It boggles the mind that a fan base who witnessed a record breaking run put together by a team consisting of some aging vets and held together by duct tape and bailing wire has “lost all faith” in management because they don’t also spend like drunken sailors and have a team that is three games under .500.
I got the world’s smallest violin for you fair weather fans.

I’m certainly critical at times. But fair weather? Ah, no. Anyone that’s been a Giants fan for 60 years has seen a whole lot of lean times. I ain’t going anywhere.

My rant was mostly directed at one particular “fan” here. Don’t worry, I get it that the only fans who didn’t complain were Celtics fans in the 60’s and maybe UCLA bruins basketball fans under Wooden, and even then, I’m sure there were fans who thought they knew better. But I have little patience for fans who go into hysterionics when their team has a rough patch.

I barely remember the end of Willie Mays' career, but I'd been a fan since 1971. Went to my first game in 1973. The Giants won the pennant two weeks before I was born in 1962, then didn't win another for 27 years. Which was my favorite line coming from a non-hall of fame announcer: "And 27 years of waiting have come to an end..." Good times or bad, I'll always be a Giants fan and a Stanford fan.

Was at the opener in 1958. Had been a long range Dodger fan. Orlando Cepeda hit a HR in his first game and hooked me. Never a Mays fan and even less when I had to work with him.
The pennant races of ‘59 and ‘62 were magical. Ross Hodges was everywhere in The City with transistor radios held to peoples’ ear on the Muni, on Montgomery Street and in class with a smuggled headset and a radio hidden in a PeeChee. No stupid DLS and wildcards and NLCS. You got a reward for finishing first, the WS.
Also we got Johnny Lemaster, the awful Felipe Alou trade, Johnny Antonella and his shit attitude, Horace going broke and the threats to move to Toronto and Miami. But watching Marichal and one fantastic year from Bill Swift was worth the agony.

Always a Giant fan. 1952 in maybe March bought a comic book on the 1951 Giants miracle finish. I was hooked. The Giants and Seals listened to every Seal game I could at night

I was a rabid, RABID Giants fan from age 11 ('58) though age 25. When Mays left, so did I. The thrill was just no longer there for some reason. Years later my son discovered the A's and brought them home (the mid-1980s) like a lost kitten. I got hooked. It was a pretty good run when they had good ownership but the 2014 season did me in. Just wasn't worth it.

OK, since the S.F. Giants are dead to me now until the off season, all my attention is on Eugene and Richmond.
I did see "Rehab Assignment" on Luciano's MiLB site profile, so it seems he'll get at least a couple more weeks of games this season. The question is at what level? Before being injured he was ready to follow Harrison to Richmond. Will he go back to Eugene? Will they promote him to Richmond? I don't see how sending him back to Eugene would make sense if he was close to being promoted before getting injured. Even if he were to struggle in Richmond, the season will only last a couple more weeks, so big whoop if he struggles. And sort of the point, what could be gained by going back to Eugene? Maybe play in the playoffs?
That sort of brings us to Vaun Brown. Just based on the stats, dude is absolutely dominating, and now he even has slightly better numbers in Eugene than San Jose. Given Brown is older than Juan Soto, does it make sense to move him to Richmond for the last couple weeks? Should we expect another promotion, or might they want him to be in Eugene for playoffs too?
Richmond tied for winning the first half and is stinking in the second half, so don't know if they will be in the playoffs or not. Obviously, the Giants need Brown and Luciano to be ready for them ASAP, so any time they can get to a level closer to the Giants seems like a good idea.

I'm always interested in pitchers like Krukow and Swift and Ron Bryant who have one amazing season in otherwise long careers. The year before Swfit (who spent 13 years in MLB) went 21-8, he went 10-4 and led the NL in ERA with 2.08. The same year, John Burkett had his only 20 win season, going 22-7. Never won more than 14 otherwise.

Spent a day with Burkett for a TWIB feature. Cool guy. Went bowling (he could have been a pro) in Beri Beri, a little enclave of South City.
Traveled with Bryant and the Giants for a few years. Bryant carried a huuuuge carnival bear with him on the plane. He’d pitch a gem at CP before about 1800 fans. We tried not to show empty seats because it made Horace sick.

IIRC Bryant fell on hard times after baseball.
