My guess is OF.  Everything I’ve read suggests he’s not a plus defensive SS.  Schmitt and Fitzgerald are long term SS possibilities.  Arteaga is very young, but supposedly a defensive stalwart.

In any event, the Core is coming.  Faster than believed. My 78 is going to be way short. If the Giants can solidify their rotation (I read Brisbees article in the Athletic but still believe they need 4 starters and only 1 bullpen out of 5) they can make a run. Wood will be back.  If he’s close to ‘21 version he will be a nice add.

There is no dominant NL team.  I’m just hoping Dodgers don’t grab Ohtani at deadline.  .

As long as the Angels are in the mix, Ohtani will stay in Anaheim.  However, I think it is only a matter of time before he heads up the freeway to LA.

On another subject, Friedman must have missed Sabean’s memo about the value of building a pitching staff from back to front.  The Dodger bullpen woes are epic……

True on Ohtani. So I hope the Angels stay in through the Deadline.

Let’s hope Bluehead bullpen woes continues. They have good bullpens the last couple years but they lost the back end of it – Jansen, Trienen etc. and some guys who were good in the past - Vesla for example – have been awful this year. Which tends to happen with relievers. Always somewhat of a crapshoot in my opinion.

I saw the 11th live on mlb.tv last night. Just wild. Great for Crawford to get that hit. And Slater, wow.

But wow, when is the last time a team made 2 errors on the same play with a man on 2nd and somehow still prevented a run?

Folks have been hating on Junis lately but he looked ok until he threw that ball into RF.

Talk has (rightly) been about the yutes.  But the key, imo,  to their 30–19 record over the past 49 has been the bullpen.  Which has been fantastic. Junis has been pretty darn good for the most part. He’s had a few rough outings. But I believe he has pitched more innings in relief than anybody on the staff. Perhaps more than anybody in baseball

How much has baseball changed?  The Rays have used 30 pitchers.  (Not including a couple position players in blowouts).

I think Matos is a more natural OF, and the Giants haven't homegrown an all-star OF since Chili Davis -- although, interestingly, Davis' career didn't really accelerate until he left the Giants.

I think Schmitt ends up at SS next season as the full time starter.

I don't see that happening. I don't think the Angels trade Ohtani to their in-region rivals...

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Mick - 06-17-2023

15-0 win over the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Second largest margin of victory at Dodger stadium since the stadium opened in 1962.

Shutout pitched by Alex Wood (5 innings), and Stanford's own Tristan Beck (4 innings, 4 base runners). Beck's ERA now 3.31.

HR by Davis and Wade, doubles by Estrada, Villar and Bailey. Giants 9/18 with runners in scoring position, including Crawford 3 for 3. Crawford 4 hits, Wade 3, JD Davis 2 for 3, rookie Luis Matos 2 for 3 with two walks, four runs scored. Matos slash line is .375/.615/.375/.990.

No errors, two double plays.

Giants now 1/2 game behind Dodgers for 2nd place in the West and the #2 wild card spot, 1.5 behind Miami for the #1 wild card spot and 4.5 behind Diamondbacks for 1st place in the west. Giants have won six in a row, second to Cincinnati's 7 in a row in the NL.

Just watched the MLB highlights on YouTube without knowing score…

Pump THAT into me by IV please! O M G do I wish I saw that full game play out.

Casey Schmitt needs to take lessons from Luis Matos who has 5 BB in 13 MLB PA.

Nice job by Beck who looks to be finding a role for himself. Middle relief used to be for lesser performers, not for the Giants these days, actually a key cog in their strategy.

Dodgers pen is a disaster for sure.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Mick - 06-19-2023

Fun facts:

1. Stanford's own Austin Slater has the highest MLB batting average (.431) and OBP (.463) for any player with 50+ ABs. He's also tied for second in DPs started by a centerfielder with two.
2. Stanford's own Tristan Beck is tied for the MLB lead in DPs by pitcher with three. Cobb is second with two (but Cobb is first in errors by pitchers with three).
3. Patrick Bailey is T5 for best percentage caught stealing (36.8%) in MLB.
4. DeSclafani is first in assists and has the best range factor of all MLB pitchers.
5. Estrada has the best range factor of all MLB second basemen.
6. Wade has the second best range factor of all MLB first basemen. He's also committed the most errors (5) as a 1B.
7. Haniger is T3 for errors in left field.
8. Giants are 7th most in MLB runs scored per game.
9. Giants are 11th fewest in MLB runs given up per game (but 8th in ERA).

Giants MLB WAR rank by position:

Designated Hitter, 3rd (0.4)
Pinch Hitters, 3rd (0.1)
First Base, 5th (1.2)
Second base, 9th (0.7)
Starting pitching, 10th (1.5)
Relief pitching, 11th (0.6)
Third base, 13th (0.2)
Right Field, 17th (-0.2)
Left Field, 18th (-0.2)
Center field, 18th (0.2)
Catcher, 22nd (0.2)
Shortstop, 24th (-0.3)

And just for fun...Mauricio Dubon is leading the Astros in Batting Average.

And the Giants also have the lowest Fielding % of all 30 MLB teams. Which makes their recent wining ways hard to understand. Grant Brisbee needs to investigate how the Giants' bad defense isn't leading to more runs being allowed. You'd think there'd be a larger discrepancy than just 3 spots between ER allowed to Runs allowed with the #30 fielding percentage which also comes with the most errors in MLB too. How does this translate to the #4 Run Differential in MLB?

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Giants - 06-19-2023

Actually, the Giants are one of the best fielding teams in MLB.

Using “out above average” which weighs a number of factors, SF is 6th overall in MLB.

This ranking reflects the “I know it when I see it” means of analyzing fielding prowess. IMO, they look far better, especially the INF, than last year.

Yes. Defense much better than ‘22.

Offensively, from the outset of the season, I’ve maintained that their offense would be as good as their ability to score without HRs.  Cause I knew they’d hit plenty of homers. I don’t have the data,  but I’m relatively confident the Giants have improved on that score from after the  first month - when it was essentially HR or bust.  I also think they’ve cut down on their strikeouts.

And then there is the bullpen. Which has gone from awful in April to terrific from early May on.

Add these factors together, you get a very good team.
