RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - JJJ - 06-17-2023

Glass half full—we’re undefeated in elimination games.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - Card10Fan - 06-17-2023

We do respond in elimination games. However this was a winnable game that we should have had. Blame can be spread around. I’m tired of being in Omaha and losing right away. You gotta figure out how to close out games.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - Madera86 - 06-17-2023

Well, I think that we had to lose this game, as close as it was, so that we can win the next three elimination games.

Wake is beatable. We got nine hits off of the best pitching staff in college. Let's pick ourselves up like we always do and earn the rematch.

I’m not sure if Roxy was thinking of a different pitch but Bruno’s 2-2 pitch to Wilken missed both high and outside. It wasn’t really close.

Here’s what Wes Clements says.  And this from the play bybplay. “Wilken walked (3-2 KBBSBB); Kurtz advanced to second.”  There were two pitches after the second strike.

It needs to be 4... Win vs. Tennessee (going by top seeds winning), beat LSU who loses to WF, beat WF twice to get to championship series vs. Florida.

The catcher made it look like the RF didn’t have a strong arm because he stepped up a few feet in front of home plate to cut off the throw and hold Becerra at first.

It’s unfortunate because any other runner would’ve been sent and probably scored in that situation but I agree with the decision to hold Moore.

Have to streongly disagree with you. Moore should have know or been told that with two outs, he should have off and running as soon as there was bat contact. Even though he's not the fastest guy, had he been hauling ass immediately, even a great throw wouldn't have gotten him.

Exactly... The lead he had from second base + running on contact, Moore should have been past third base once the Right fielder got control of the ball. It would have taken a very precise throw to get him out at the plate from a strong arm.

It was worth the risk from my vantage point. The third base coach blew it with perhaps some assistance from Moore is he hesitated on contact.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - Langdude - 06-17-2023

I think we pitched outstanding, even with the weird strike zone. I think we played solid defense.

I think that we did very poorly on the base paths, giving a great team free outs and taking away potential runs (a double killer). And I think that we did not hit with RISP, and that includes some of our most vaunted hitters.

When you make running mistakes and don't come through with productive hitting, especially as a team that relies on scoring, you almost always lose to good teams. We had a chance as their ace was off his game. We did not take advantage of it.

This was from yesterday, but it made me feel better after watching it just now. Maybe you will too.

OK, I’ve seen the replay. The pitch I saw was on the outside corner at the knees. Will post the clip as soon as my hardware catches up. Stay tuned.

As I said to a fan at the third Texas game, “For smart guys, this team makes a lot of bonehead mistakes.” Still true.

If you go to the box score of the game on ESPN you can see the pitch location. I think it was a bit higher than the spot shown, but it’s clearly well off the plate. The dead giveaway that it was outside was Moore yanking his glove way back to his left after he caught it.

I’ll put it like this, if that had been a Stanford batter at the plate and that pitch was called a strike, I would’ve been livid.

It was NOT the same strike zone in the top and bottom halves of the inning, even if it was the same human. That is a big part of the problem.

Go back and look at the pitches that were called strikes on Rios and the ones Bruno did not get.

When you have humans (when you don't need to , as the technology is there), you have people who can be affected by things like reputation. That ump should be an ice skating judge, because his calls were influenced by Bruno's and the Wake pitcher's reputations. That is bs. The only thing that should matter is whether the pitch was in the zone as the home plate umpire has called it all day. Btw, that is another problem with humans calling balls and strikes. Why does every ump get to decide what his strike zone is?

The world has evolved. Let machines call balls and strikes, at least at the upper reaches of the game, to eliminate human subjectivy and bias. Let the kids decide the game, not the old men.

In baseball, if they won't give you the corners, you have the throw meatballs down the middle. And these kids are good enough to hit meatballs.

We still do dumb things at the wrong time and continue to send in a closer who is a head case if the ump is calling strikes, balls etc.  Bruno potentially has a lot of talent, but he hasn't shown it this year.  Wrong guy to send in any time the game is sort of close and the ump is calling strikes balls.
Frankly, we have made a lot of mistakes at the coaching level.  Time Esquer et al start doing a better job.

Yes, GK. Oh, wait, we've been to the CWS three years in a row.

I want an electronic strike zone to get the call right. And maybe the lion share of the explanation today is the inconsistent strike zone and home plate ump. What I also do know is in three out of the last four games, and four games in this tournament already, the bullpen has gotten a lead or tied game and lost either the lead and/or the game (the drop fly ball at Sunken Diamond gave us the walkoff against UT). I am a big softball fan; by my count, Stanford softball blew one game in the bullpen all season (on the road at Utah). An elite pitching team (like Stanford softball) shuts the door. This is not an elite pitching team.

Also, in softball it helps having arguably the best pitcher in the country to come in relief in close games.  I agree about computer vision equipment to call balls and strikes and perhaps AI robots to replace umps at the bases.

I agree SF. But why can't Stanford baseball also have the best pitcher/closer in the country? Quinn Matthews is great. We have had great staffs in baseball in 2017 and 2018 (and even 2019 for baseball was quite good). Canady is the best pitcher in the country for softball for Stanford because of recruiting and development (recruiting a great player like Canady on the 40 year plan and what she can achieve athletically, and then helping her achieve on her potential).

There's been lack of development. Scott started great but went cold. Mathews being the exception.
