Re: NFL Playoff Thread - dabigv13 - 01-12-2014

Man, Dan Dierdorf looked old last night. The years must've advanced past the abilities of the CBS crew to keep him looking good. Also, his commentary regarding the punt was pretty dumb. State the obvious buddy, it was a really sloppy play, but ultimately the outcome that the Pats would've wanted at that juncture.

I wish there was an option to play only the sounds of the game, without any commentary. Can't be the only one who would love to be able to hit the SAP and turn off the idiot announcers. Actually, if the SAP had an alternate track where it was just the sounds of Chris Collinsworth being tortured, I could go for that as well.

Finally, an opinion that won't go over well with Garvin- Andrew Luck reminds me a LOT of Dan Marino and the great majority of his Dolphins teams. Rocket arm, blazing quick release, throwing receivers open, 4th quarter comebacks galore. Carrying a team without any credible running threat, a porous offensive line, and a suspect defense. They both have/had a great ability to work in a crowded pocket and avoid the rush, though Luck does it more with his athleticism and Marino with awareness and side stepping. I hope Indianapolis eventually builds the team around Andrew that Dan never had so they can win the big one.

If you have surround sound, you can just unplug the center speaker (or turn it off electronically if your receiver supports it). The announcer commentary usually only comes through the center, and game noise comes through all the other ones.

Learn so much about sports tech on this board.  I know CBS and ESPN occasionally have channels dedicated to showing all 22 on the field.  A large screen TV featuring all 22 video and surround sound may be my next project.  I just hate when commentators need to talk about and show a trivial replay so that viewers miss the breaking of the huddle, any pre-snap motion AND the snap.  It happens more and more it seems.  Often it is hard to follow the real flow of the game, especially on bigger broadcasts with multiple cameras and commentators.

Re: NFL Playoff Thread - Leftcoast - 01-12-2014

Harbaugh vs Carrol.  Sherman and Baldwin in silver and blue.  Fangio and Roman on the 49er sideline.  Stanford connections, storylines and rivalries dating back to before the "Greatest Upset Ever".  NFC title and a Super Bowl slot to the winner.

Must see TV next weekend.

Doesn't Roman stay up in the booth?

It's a metaphorical sideline.

How's that? I had heard that Harbaugh was more the "traitor" as Sherman was trying to improve his draft position, by speaking poorly of Sherman to coaches. If anything, I would consider him a traitor to Luck for touting Wilson ahead of his former teammate, but in the end he's just supporting his teammate.

I don't know...it seems to me that this would backfire.  If this actually happened, it would seem to me that it was logical that he ended up with the Seahawks with a coach who knew him at least a little from Pac-12 play.  His skills obviously won out.

Re: NFL Playoff Thread - Ratmandoo - 01-12-2014

And as much as I hate Pete Carroll, he does know how to coach DBs. Sherman couldn't have ended up in a better situation for his pro career than going to Seattle and playing in Carroll's defense (maybe playing for Rex Ryan and the Jets?). I think it's safe to say that's he's become a much better corner in the NFL than any of us thought was possible. He's not an All-Pro if got drafted by the Niners because he wouldn't be playing as much bump and run coverage in Fangio's defense.

BTW, I REALLY enjoyed 49er Navorro Bowman's imitation of Shane Skov.  Panthers' ball on the 1-yard line and Bowman came flying over the line of scrimmage, seemingly right over Cam Newton's head.  Unbelievable leap, but sadly for Navorro, he just isn't as gifted as Shane at timing such an attempt.  Oh well, no bother.  Down over on the 1/2-yard line.  I LOVE that.

And yet, the penalty was only "half the distance", so the niners didn't lose much.  And the niners still stuffed them on the goal line, so even though it didn't "work", mission accomplished for the forty-niners.  Moreover, I wonder if that sort of timing thing gets in the head of the offensive team and messes with their execution.  I'm almost surprised that there wasn't a false start on the very next play.  FWIW, if a team is within the one yard line, the defense should ALWAYS try to time the snap count; the reward vastly outweighs the risk.
