With teams still on the course, the current standings are:

1. USC -7 (final)
2. Stanford -6 (final)
3. Oklahoma State -5 (final)
4. Arkansas -4 (still on the course)

Stanford was led today by senior Megha Ganne who is tied for 1st overall at -4. Meja Ortengren was -2 and Kelly Xu was -1. Paula Martin Sampedro, who had been Stanford's hottest player coming into the tournament, was +1. Andrea Revuelta birdied the 1st hole and then nothing else and finished at +3.

I am a little concerned about Revuelta. It might be that this course does not suit her game. She has now played 5 medal rounds on this course with only 1 round under par. She missed 3 short putts in the final last year against Northwestern which helped her opponent win the match. I think she could use a boost of confidence on this course.

Players have only a little bit of time today to work on things post-round before calling it a day and turning in early. Stanford will be back on the course tomorrow starting at 6:30 am which probably means a wake up call around 4:30 or 5 am. But they get to play the course at its most benign in the early morning with low wind and softer greens.

Stanford is much better positioned than Florida, the #3 seeded team. They shot +9 and sit in 25th place out of 30 teams. Auburn, the #6 seeded team, is dead last.

It was a sunny, warm and quite breezy afternoon on the LaCosta course, and maybe that contributed to some of the seemingly fast greens.

Ganne could've had an even better day but she uncharacteristically 3-putted her final hole. Her birdie putt slid by and then she left her par putt a couple inches short. LSJU could easily be in first place by a stroke. The team started on the 10th hole and ended with 7-8-9, three of the six toughest holes today.

It was cool to briefly meet coach Walker and her assistants, along with some other LSJU fans. There's supposedly several thousand LSJU alums in greater San Diego and a tiny percentage were at the tournament. Maybe more will emerge over the holiday weekend!

Stanford and USC have separated from the rest of the field. I predict that they will be the only 2 teams under par by the end of today.

1. Stanford -12
2. USC -9

Stanford was led today by Meja Ortengren. Her 68 (-4) has tied her for the overall lead. Megha Ganne shot 71 (-1) and is one shot back. Paula Martin Sampedro shot 71 and Andrea Revuelta was even par 72. Kelly Xu was the drop score with 75.

Stanford gets the afternoon off before returning for tomorrow's 3rd round when they will once again be off 1st at 6:30 am. The NCAA committee gives the top 15 teams a major advantage over the bottom 15 for round 3 by giving the top 15 the morning tee times. The bottom 15 teams after tomorrow's round will be cut and will not play round 4.

Fixed it for you. Stanford has now opened a 7 stroke lead over USC with about 3 holes to play in the round. Someone posted a link above to last year’s tournament, and I didn’t understand how they had already played the final round. In any case, here’s the correct link. Stanford is at -18, followed by USC at -11, the Ok State at -7.

On the individual level, Megha Ganne is in a three-way tie for first and Meja Örtengren is tied for fourth at, one stroke behind.

Stanford just keeps doing Stanford things. The Cardinal is well-positioned to advance to match play for the 11th consecutive time. It takes a lot of mental toughness to carry the weight of expectations and pressure that comes with being the top team and still deliver top performances. But that is what this Stanford team has done year after year after year. Remarkable.

The TV attention tomorrow will mostly be on the individual race. It really is a tremendous leaderboard with 4 of the top 12 golfers in the country within 2 shots of one another. There will also be attention on the scrum of teams around the 8th position as they battle for a spot in match play. Right now, 3 teams are tied for 7th - Duke, Florida and ASU. Wake Forest or Auburn could sneak into the mix if they go really low today.

At the end of round 3 the field was trimmed to the top 15. #8 Wake, #6 Auburn and #4 Texas A&M were eliminated. The drama today for Stanford will be whether Megha or Meja can win the individual title. As we know, there is no hardware for being the top seed going into match play.

Well, Stanford put the finishing touches on the win in the final round. Looks like Stanford is going to end the tournament at -22, 13 strokes ahead of USC at -9 (I think one USC player is still on the course). No other team broke par.

On the individual level, unfortunately, Ortengren shot +7 for the current round and fell out of contention, to a tie for 14th with Kelly Xu, who closed strong with a -3 today to end at -2. Megha Ganne wound up in second, two strokes behind the champion, Farah O'Keefe from Texas.

Of note, today #3 Florida had a rotten round to finish out of the top-8. Looks like we will play #11 Pepperdine in the first round of Match play (if seedings are by the results of the stroke play round). If we advance, we will play the winner of Eastern Michigan and Texas.

6 years in a row winning the team medal play portion! Quite an amazing record. From Rose Zhang to Rachel Heck to Megha Ganne and Kelly Xu.

The quarterfinal is a rematch of a quarterfinal match from 2023 which Stanford won over Pepperdine 3-1. Both Kelly Xu and Megha Ganne played in that match as frosh. Ganne lost to Jeneath Wong who is a senior on the current Pepperdine team. Xu won her match. I'll be interested to see how Coach Walker handles the pairings. Who goes out first? Who is the anchor? Who is "protected" a bit at positions 2 and 3? Ganne is probably Stanford's best match play player. She has won her last 4 NCAA matches (and is of course the reigning US amateur champ).

Quarterfinal action starts at 7 am. Streaming first on golfchannel.com. Live TV starts at 10 am on Golf Channel.

So match play, and match play only, determines the team winner? The only thing medal play does is to determine the eligibility and seeding for a single elimination match play tournament of 8 teams.

Coach decided to put them out there based on experience: soph (Ortengren), soph (Revuelta), junior (Martin Sampedro), senior (Xu), senior (Ganne). No need to try to set up specific match ups when you have five number ones.

Some "May gray" today in Carlsbad with a decent onshore breeze all afternoon. I don't know the exact stats but there were golf balls landing in the sand everywhere. LSJU was one of only two teams under par.

Revuelta had a good round, even with a double bogey at the par 3 16th hole.

My faux "brush-with-fame" came near the 16th, where another fan, not wearing any school colors, came up to me and thought I was Xu's father and congratulated me on the fine play of my daughter!

Yes, correct. Medal play also determines the individual winner.

Stanford will be on the course starting off the 1st hole at 7:40 am.

Let's take a look at their NCAA match play record:
Ganne is 4-2 with 2 unfinished. But she is 4-0 with one unfinished in her last 5 matches.
Xu is 7-1.
Martin Sampedro is 2-1 with 3 unfinished.
Ortengren is 1-2.
Revuelta is 1-1 with 1 unfinished.

Success at La Costa is determined by your play around the greens. No one has more experience playing on and reading these greens than Stanford. Let's hope they can translate that experience into made putts and won holes.

The team seemed to excel at the last 5-7 holes. But struggle over the last few holes of the front nine.

Andrea Revuelta dominates her opponent, 5&4, to put Stanford up 1-0. Stanford is 3 up, 1 up, 2 up and even in the remaining matches.

Arkansas and U. Satan's Children already won to earn their spots in the semifinals. The remaining match, Texas-Eastern Michigan, is too close to call.

Paula Martín Sampedro takes her match 3&2. Stanford ahead 2-0 and is 1 up, 1 up and 2 up in the remaining matches.

Meja Örtengren wins her match 1 up. Stanford is moving on to the semifinals! FWIW, Kelly Xu was 1 up through 15 and Megha Ganne was 3 up through 15, so it was looking like a clean sweep.

But big congrats to Meja who lost the *first three holes* and came all the way back to win.

Solid effort by all 5 Stanford players. That makes 4 consecutive semifinals for Xu and Ganne, a remarkable record. The semifinal opponent is yet to be determined. Texas and Eastern Michigan are locked in a very tight match.

Edit - Eastern Michigan upset Texas 3-1. Stanford will face the Cinderella team Eastern Michigan Eagles in the semis. EMU features twin sisters who transferred from Long Beach State and who grew up in Oceanside, a few miles from La Costa.

Afternoon match will start sometime around 2 pm with TV starting at 3 pm.

Stanford will play the same line up in the semis as they did this morning - Ortengren, Revuelta, Martin Sampedro, Xu, Ganne. EMU also playing the same line up in the same order. That means that the marquee matchups are Stanford's Spanish pair vs. the Leovao sisters in Matches 2 and 3.

EMU is the real deal. 4 of their players are ranked in the top 101 in the country. They have been making putts from everywhere so they have a good feel for the greens. They will have a large cheering section since the Leovao sisters are locals. And everyone loves the underdog. They have nothing to lose. But Stanford is battle-tested. Should be a good one.
