There are 3 spots available for those 5 teams. Arizona locked up 6th with a couple of late birdies. Stanford now guaranteed to be in a playoff with Tennessee, UCLA and North Carolina for 7th and 8th.
Each team will play the same hole. 5 players, cumulative score. If still tied, they go to another playoff hole. Stanford lost to ASU in a playoff for 8th in 2023.

Arizona now at -3 and still on the course. UNC in the clubhouse tied with Stanford and Tennessee at -2. UCLA at -2 and still on the course.
UCLA in the clubhouse at -2.
Arizona in the clubhouse at -3. So we have four teams tied at 7th place. Do they play the playoff today? I have dinner plans, so I would appreciate if they would wait until tomorrow morning.
Today.

They will start the playoff today. If they run out of daylight, it will continue first thing tomorrow.
Tomorrow is an early day for the quarterfinalists. First tee time is supposed to be 6:50 am.

Just out of curiosity, how does a multi-team playoff with multiple slots work? I would guess that if one team shoots under the others it clinches a spot and the remaining teams fight for the other one, and if one team shoots above the others it is disqualified, with the remaining continuing to play?
Also, if two teams are disqualified, how does the 7th vs. 8th seed work?

Stanford in at 7th, UCLA in at 8th. Stanford even over the five holes, UCLA +1, the others at +2

It looks like each player from the team played a different hole (1 through 5).
All players seemed to have finished their respective holes. Stanford ended up even, LoseCLA at +1, the others at +2.
Does it mean we advance along with the Polar Bears?

in essence a 5 team, 20 man shoot out over 5 holes simultaneously.
Stanford shoots even, UCLA +1, UNC and Tenn +2.
not sure why Stanford is 8 seed, instead of 7.
anyway, a shock for us to make matchup.
one step at a time. fun to watch

I see us in 7th in the standings on the website. If true, we'll take on the Steers tomorrow.

What a great effort by the team to hang in there and make the match play round, where anything can happen.
Maybe this is the year that the format favors us.

It’s Auburn. 1 v 8.

Indeed, Stanford is seeded against Auburn on Tuesday.

All I can think is that for seeding purposes two teams were tied for 7th and that seeding was done by some criteria other than playoff ranking. Perhaps a coin flip

Looks like a 7:40 a.m. tee time tomorrow morning, starting on the 10th hole. I may make the short trek up to LaCosta to cheer the lads on.

Yes, essentially the playoff was only for elimination purposes. The tiebreaker for pairings started with cumulative total of non-counting scores.

Pressure is real. UNC lost when one of their players in the playoff chunked a tee shot on the par 3 into the lake. Tennessee lost when one of their players hit a drive that barely went 100 yards and ended up in a penalty area. Stanford survived that pressure cooker.
The reward is a match vs. the #1 team and the number #1 amateur player in the world. It's going to take some great putting and certainly some luck to beat these guys. But let's put some pressure on Auburn and see how they respond. You know who doesn't have a chance against Auburn? The 22 teams that failed to make match play. I am hoping to see some great play. Let's go, Card!!

Dinner went great last night and tasted even better when I learned that Stanford made match play!
Speaking of which, is anyone else following Stanford's match vs. Auburn? It's still early but Stanford is all even with the Tigers. Nobadeer, I'd love some in person reporting!

Conditions are ideal for scoring. Coastal low clouds are still blocking the sun and there is almost no wind at all.
Gao is getting rolled by a very strong frosh, Jake Albert. Albert is -5 and 5 up after 8. Gao is playing ok, but Albert is off the charts right now.
Greyserman, Leng and Cui are hanging in there. Greyserman has 3 birdies in 8 holes but so does his opponent. They are all square. Leng is -2 and also all square. Cui birdied the first hole and has parred since then. He is 1 up.
Wang has bogeyed 4 of 9 holes. He's lucky to be only 1 down to Jackson Koivun, the #1 amateur in the world.
Interesting that Coach Ray has ordered his players in descending college experience - senior, senior, junior, soph, frosh. A lot of pressure on Leng and Cui at the end of the lineup.
RE: 2026 Men's Golf -
Spiny_Norman - 06-02-2026
As they make the turn, Stanford is not going away. Gao is still 6 down. And Wang is 2 down to Koivun. To win, Stanford has to win the remaining 3 matches.
Greyserman birdied 1 and 2 (his 10th and 11th holes) to take a 1 up lead.
Cui birdied 18 (his 9th hole) to take a 2 up lead.
Leng is 1 down after 10.
Edit - but Wang birdied 3 (his 12th hole) to get to only 1 down!
RE: 2026 Men's Golf -
Papa John - 06-02-2026
Ethan Gao goes down 6&5 to Auburn phenom Jake Gilbert, who had 5 birdies, 7 pars and just 1 bogey.
Nathan Wang is now tied through 15 holes.
Dean Greyersman
still 1 up 1 down through 15.
Jay Leng
3 2 down through 14.
Edan Cui
1 up tied through 13.
RE: 2026 Men's Golf -
Papa John - 06-02-2026
Stanford still with a lot of work to do vs Auburn:
Wang 1 up through 17.
Greyserman 1 down through 16.
Leng 3 down through 15.
Cui tied through 14.
UCLA defeats Texas 3-2 and moves on to the semifinals.
Wang wins his match 2 up!
